Returned Note 4, BRING ON THE NEXUS 6

Re: Giving up the Note 4 for the Nexus 6

Anyone know if there is much difference between the 'Amoled' on the Nexus 6 and the 'Super Amoled' on the Note 4? I like the bright screens on Samsungs, though I prefer the stock Android of the Nexus. If the two are combined in the Nexus 6 together with good sound and battery life it'll be perfect. What other 'key' features are in the competition? S-pen, multi-screen, wireless charging?
BTW, does the Samsung actually have a bigger screen effectively as it has the buttons separate at the bottom?

When including the soft buttons they are about the same size, however there are times and apps where the soft buttons are hidden. That said, read my last posts on this thread about the Note 4s scaling and use of the screen. The smaller iPhone 6 Plus screen makes more things visible than the Note 4, so if the Nexus is done right, you'll get more out of the screen even if the soft buttons do make them about the same size. Its almost like the Note 4 uses a scaler to just super size the S5 screen.

Regarding AMOLED, the Samsung is almost guaranteed to be brighter and have more saturation, but that doesn't mean the Nexus 6 will be bad by any means and being AMOLED it will still have amazing blacks and good contrast.

I did try that, but that isn't the issue. 100% font should make better use of the screen and it is on a per app basis unless I'm missing something. If I'm not, reducing the font size in every app used to better utilize the screen is ridiculous when other phones just make better use of it out of the box.

In my very unscientific test that I just did changing the font size from small to huge affected Chrome and Facebook (and the rest of the system of course). Facebook did require me to swipe it away and reload the app.

Obviously "small" displayed more information than "huge".

That was on my Nexus 5 running L preview. So maybe it's an L thing, but I doubt it.

Where are you changing the text size? There may be something I missed in the settings menu, but I didn't see it and I don't see it on this Nexus 4 either. All I was able to find were the per app settings in the apps that actually had it. It very well could be an L thing.

It appears it isn't just text size. I know I'm taking this pretty far, but it is scaling in general. I no longer have the Note 4, but I measured the size of the upper bar in Facebook on my Nexus 7 and on my wife's S5 and the S5 is bigger.

On the Nexus 7 from the bottom of the notification bar to the upper border line of the first post is a hair over 5/8". On the S5 it is just a hair under 3/4, and the Note 4 showed the same amount of content as the S5, so I have to imagine it would be even more. On my Nexus 4 it was the same as the Nexus 7.

The point is that Samsung scales everything, and it is worse on the Note 4, which is terrible use of the screen on a "phablet". If the Nexus 4 and 7 I have in my possession are any indication the Nexus 6 will make much better use of the screen size compared to the Note 4.

Also, yes, I know I'm taking this to crazy lengths... Lol.

I had every Samsung S & Note series and as much as I love the Note 4 I can't afford both. Besides, I always wanted to try Motorola the last one was the KRZR. :)

Yeah, but making the text smaller definitely helps fit more content on the screen.

Remember that manufacturers have to play to the masses, so they can't make everything super small. They should make it user selectable though.

Found it, don't know how I missed that... Appreciate it!

Regarding size, you're right, but I think Samsung is blowing up the DPI higher than they really need to. When graphical elements are smaller on a 7" screen than they are on a 5.1" screen, as in my examples, they have to be making some sort of adjustment.

Re: Giving up the Note 4 for the Nexus 6

I played with a Note 4 in the VZW store yesterday. I set the Display Font size to Tiny, It changed the menus and that's about it. It did not change the app names on the home screen, it didn't change the text size in any of the apps, nothing. It just made the menus smaller. I too have the same complaints that IrishFXDB has. I don't want the font size as blown up as Samsung demands, and since I don't have any desire to root it to change all the fonts, I'd be stuck with it. Motorola's Font Size change seems to change much more on the phone.

Thank you, at least now I know I'm not alone and going crazy! Lol.

Update:

I tried it on my wife's S5 when she got home. I set her up with the Google Now launcher and on that it did reduce the text size, so I can't speak for the Touchwiz launcher. Obviously it just changed text and not icons. In Facebook I had to completely close it, but after that it showed the new text size. GUI elements are still scaled to whatever high DPI Samsung uses, however, while it helps it still isn't what I would call ideal for a large screened phone.
I guess all we can do is hope that the Nexus has a more appropriate DPI setting for a phablet sized screen.

The Nexus 6 will be perhaps the most powerful flagship on the market right now as Note 4. But I love the design of Nexus 6 more:)

Re: Giving up the Note 4 for the Nexus 6

Did some checking and the DPI on the Note 4 is 640. The Nexus 6 is supposedly around 560, so if that is true it will definitely make better use of the screen without rooting and using Xposed to change it yourself.

Makes me happy, assuming it's true, at least.

The point about Note 4 scaling is a great one. And I think we can rest assured the Nexus 6 won't have this issue. See this comparison pic, it's clear the Nexus is displaying a lot more content.

Good deal, thanks for that.

Font looks bigger on the Note 4. I wonder what it would look like if the font was the same size.

The images are larger too, so even if you reduce the font you still have larger images from the higher DPI on the Note 4.

Help! Opinions wanted!

I am really up in the air if I was the Note 4 or the Nexus 6. I haven't been able to find a side by side comparison. I want pure Google, and found out there is going to be a Google addition Note 4 on Verizon. Pro and cons of both would be awesome, or point me to a side by side spec comparison. Thanks!

Re: Help! Opinions wanted!

If you want a Pure Google Experience get the Nexus 6. There is no "Google Edition" of the Note 4 for Verizon, only a Developer's Edition which allows the user to unlock the bootloader & root the device. It still runs TouchWiz like the original Note 4
