Returning for the GS2?

I'm picking up a photon today. I like the way it fits in my hands a lot and the radios on it are amazing.

<snipped>
  • (negative) The sammy is likely to have much more accessory support than the photon
  • (neutral) Most of my irritations with the photon are actually irritations with the fact that android doesn't do something that I liked in webOS. The sammy is not likely to resolve this.
The Photon seems to already have a decent range of accessories, and more have already been promised (e.i., Seidio extended life batteries). Everyone sings the praise of the docks, for instance. What sort of accessories do you expect to get for the Samsung and not for the MoPho?

I agree with the other point I left. There are a lot of things that bug me about the MoPho, but they all seem to be elements of Android (and it not being WebOS) and not unique to this phone. Other than it being a little too large for my hands, and not having a good portrait keyboard -- problems shared by all the high-end android devices, even if there are Androids that have those features -- there's nothing that bugs me that I think I could improve on by switching. So I'm pretty satisfied with what I have.

(And grateful that the update that fixed the "no sound" issue came out before my 30 days expired.)

Well, the first thing that comes to mind is I'd like a powermat receiver so that I can have inductive charging again. But apart from that, I'd like to see more cases/holsters. More car mount options. More dock options. In addition to different types of accessories, I'd like to see competition bring down the prices of existing accessories.

I suspect (although I don't know for certain) that the sammy's will get more of this attention. Of course, it's doubtful that any android phone will ever see as many options as are available for the iPhone.

Although I had to return my first Photon because of a bad headphone jack, I'm otherwise really loving this phone. For me, it comes down to the basics. Great phone reception/radio. Great battery life. Fast and reliable. It doesn't have Sense, or an AMOLED screen, but so far, it's a powerhouse, and getting the first update less than a month after launch is a very good sign (as is Google's acquisition of Motorola) I'm staying put.

I'm split with what to do. I'm really happy with my Photon. The battery life is really good, the reception is much better than what I had on my Epic, and the phone is really fast. After the recent software update, I really don't have many issues with this phone. Actually, th battery life seems so good that I feel like I don't have to root it to get a custom ROM to improve things. Oh yeah, I'm having some problems with the Gameloft games which don't seem to work all that well.

On the flipside, Samsung phones are much easier to root and they seem to have a bigger and better development community. This phone got superbreviews just about everywhere. I'm curious about the battery life and if it's better, I might make the switch, but I would still be really happy if I kept my Photon.

Until Samsung can prove they're willing to consistently support their phones in the US after release, I'm not buying one. They're beautiful and powerful and invoke gadget lust, but their support is atrocious. How long did it take for the Epic to get Froyo? And when it did, it was an utter mess. Verizon's Galaxy S variant was practically abandoned after release. My fiance hates her Epic so much (terrible battery life, wonky GPS, crashes, etc.) she's completely turned off Android (despite my best efforts to convince her it's the phone's fault) and is determined to pick up an iPhone.

So no, I'm keeping my Photon, thanks.

Well, maybe I'm just a raging optimist, but there seem to be a lot of Pre refuges using the photon, including a bunch of home-brew types and tinkerers. I am sort of expecting the guy who sells custom inductive charging backs for the extended batteries on the Pre to peddle similar wares here. Or someone like him. There's a thread out there from someone who is trying to modify his own Photon to work with the touchstone already. At any rate, I bet the Photon eventually gets an inductive charging solution.

But apart from that, I'd like to see more cases/holsters. More car mount options. More dock options. In addition to different types of accessories, I'd like to see competition bring down the prices of existing accessories.

Okay. My favorite screen protector is already available for the Photon (Phantom Skinz) and an awful lot of cases and stuff look like they should work with any of the 4.3" devices, but I'm sure there's more and better custom stuff for the best-selling models.

I am waiting for a call from Sprint to tell me when they will have S2 in store. My 30 day runs out on 18th and store is supposed to have S2 by 16th. I have been happy with the Photon, actually I thinks its great. I did have a battery drain problem early on, but now it seems to be fine. I ordered three backup batteries, they will arrive about the time I decide to go to S2. No biggy, the batteries and charger were only $12.

So do I go with a phone I am very happy with or go with what I originally wanted, but thought it would be Oct or Nov before it would be available and I needed to dump my Pre minus?

Don't get too excited about the batteries. All of the aftermarket ones on eBay are for the Droid 3. They don't tell you that up front. Got mine yesterday and they don't work with the Photon. The only battery available right now is from Motorola for $50. I already have a dispute in process through eBay on these batteries. Good luck!

Do you have the model number of your ebay battery? Ebay seems to list several different models.

There are ebay batteries that list to be for Atrix/D3/X2/Photon or something like that which obviously don't work for photon. Two weeks ago one poped up that just says Photon. I ordered as soon as they were up (or close to it) and they have not come yet, takes awhile from China in slow mail.

I have to agree about the powermat, I'd kill for one.

Mike is right, I got mine from arena.gadget, I have bought from them a couple of times. 11 days to Florida. Haven't opened will make my S2 decision on 15th or 16th. I got 3 screen protectors, rubberized case, 3 batteries and charger for $17, including shipping. Just checked and the batteries I got that Mike mentions work great in MoPho. If I return Photon, oh well.

Search on ebay under motorola photon battery

The batts are 1500s from Hong Kong and a wall charger
They take about 2 weeks or more to reach you, slow ground mail.
On my Epic they lasted about 60% as long as the OEM.
Total price with shipping for 3 batteries and the charger is 12.90 US

They are a great deal for backups, I ordered mine 2 weeks before I expected to get my phone.'

Returned my Photon today (day 29). Not because I didn't like it, I loved it. I'm just too curious about the Epic 4G Touch, and iPhone rumors. I would kick myself if I didn't wait it out a month. If I don't like what I see with the Epic 4G Touch, or if the iPhone rumors don't become reality, I will definitely be back with a Photon. Now...a month of torture using my son's old Samsung Intercept POS. Hopefully my waiting will pay off one way or another.

If I have to switch to a different phone, the only backup I have is the original touch pro. I dread that day if it ever comes.

I still have an upgrade coming on Nov. 1st and I just might get the sgsII. That should be well enough time for people to complain about it and have some fixes to problems worked out. Then my moPho will goto either my son or my dad....

From Photon to Intercept... WOW!

I'm dying already. My son was complaining about it for about 4 months before I gave in and bought him an EVO Shift. After using that Intercept for a day I honestly feel bad for putting him through that. It really is a POS.

It's really that bad, huh? Ouch.

I have a family plan (wife, daugher-self). I just got the Photon on Sept 3. My wife bought another phone from a friends of ours for our other daughter. I may return my my Photon for the epic touch and since my we"ll be activating a used phone for our daughter, that line would be eligible for an upgrade...in which, I can get the iphone...that is if it does come to sprint. :)

Another thing too is because I got the Photon before September 16, when I exchange for the Epic Touch, my etf will still be $200 instead of the new amount of $350
