Re: [REVIEW/GUIDE] GS3 vs. GNex for VZW - 7/8/12

After having the weekend also with my new S3, I have gotten used to touchwiz and the buttons, and I am really digging this phone. I miss Jelly Bean on the Nexus, but this phone to me looks nicer (I have the blue), is thinner, and has some definite improvements over the Nexus, being most significantly battery life and camera. I was out all day yesterday at the Sox game, went to dinner, and after 9 hours it was at 64%. My Nexus would have been at 30% or less. Signal I would say is better, but not by a ton. I can't wait until this phone gets Jelly Bean, since S Voice sucks compared to google's voice on JB. Other than that, I don't regret switching.

Great review with a lot of info. I do like the specs and look of the GS3 but I cant stand TouchWiz. Im waiting while and hoping that someone cooks up a good clean ROM with no TouchWiz just clean ICS, then I might make the switch from my Nexus.

While Touch wiz does cover up the stock Android experience you can ways download a third party launcher like Nova on the GS3 and it looks better and runs closer to stock. Here is a screen of what mine looks like with Nova.

I've had my gs3 for a day now, and I do love the phone, but I do kind of already miss my nexus... I never realized how much I'd miss the subtle curve to the screen for one. It's weird going back to a "flat" phone again.

But the display and camera, the two things I use most on the phone, are simply amazing on the gs3. That, and no hand-off issues makes me glad I made the decision to move on to the gs3.

As far as signal, if you live in a strong area, the Gnex will look close or the same as the Razr or any other same carrier device. The key is getting into fringe areas. I will compare with the Razr and live in an area with plenty of fringe points to compare both.

If the GS3 hangs with the Razr, I am good.

Very true. I live in an area where I bounce between 3G and 4G often and the GNex was terrible at it. One of the reasons I never kept 4G on. I find no reason to keep it off on the GS3 I have no major hand off issues to speak of.

Re: [REVIEW/GUIDE] GS3 vs. GNex for VZW - 7/10/12

Thanks for this. I'm new to Android, so I had no past experience to base my choice on, just what I read on boards about the GN and even with that, I was on the fence when faced with the 6/28 deadline. The "Verizoning" of the S3 has me a little worried about owning the phone long-term, but I initially chose the S3 over the GN since it had the top of the line hardware and it seems like that does have some value here. The GN reception issues worried me as well and I want a good camera. I figure the devs will make up for what VZW tries to take or keep from us. So far it seems like the effort behind this phone is strong, so I can't imagine it would die off very soon. Plus from the sounds of it, I can probably live with just root access, rather than "advanced" stuff with kernals and such.

If all else fails, I can just sell the S3 and buy something in the fall. The bootloader shouldn't affect the ability to sell the phone to some "regular" user, and it is still a pricey device that will fetch a decent amount. Getting the S3 with my last contract maxes out the subsidy compared to a GN or even Incredible LTE. If I want one of those, I can probably find a decent deal somewhere for a slightly used one.

How's your battery life been? Seeming that we'll all be running stock for some time now.

Question(Dwight Shrute) how fast does the S3 access the added SD card storage? Does it store and access photos quickly like the nexus does? I'm more worried about the FAST response time of shooting pictures quickly

Bounced off of my JellyBelly into your eye.

Battery life has been impressive. First full drain was on battery for 28 hours or so with 2.5 hours of screen on time. Not to shabby for a stock phone.

S3 access the SD card pretty fast. Using PowerAmp for music its quick and accessing pics its damn near instant. Saving pics are also insanely quick... downtime at all really between snapping shots.

First of all, thanks for the writeup

Secondly, I've only owned my S3 for 24 hours but I miss the Nexus, I really like the on screen buttons more. I find Jelly Bean to be smoother overall. Needless to say, the hackability of the Nexus far exceeds the S3.

Owning a Nexus provides for a much cleaner interface than the S3 as well.

We'll see which way I end up swinging, I ultimately plan on keeping both devices but as of now, will revert back to the Nexus.

I agree with your 100%. The Nexus was an overall stellar device. I honestly will say that out of the many phones that I have owned over the years it is my favorite all time phone.

In relation to OP: Adding review of speaker phone, used it last night.
