Right way to upgrade to the Nexus without losing unlimited data?

This may have been discussed before, but I want to make sure I do this the right way.

I'm getting the Nexus, but I want to keep my unlimited data. Does that mean I have to buy it off contract, or can I upgrade and still be grandfathered in? Keep in mind I may have already been grandfathered in once when I bought this God-awful Charge.

I might not even be eligible for an upgrade, but I don't mind paying full retail for a phone that works like it's supposed to. I just definitely do not want to lose that unlimited data.

you're grandfathered in by being an existing Verizon customer, especially since you purchased the Droid Charge (which yes I agree, sucks; but that screen is nice right?! lol)

you don't have to purchase the Galaxy Nexus any "specific or right way" to keep your unlimited data. but when you do purchase it, i would double check that your unlimited data plan is still intact and was retained.

Do your upgrade and make sure you confirm in writing (it'll be on your sales contract print out) that you have unlimited data. You are grandfathered in, no questions asked. Just don't sign for any 2GB or 4GB plans and you'll be fine.

Been there. Done that myself. It's all good.

I believe you have to do the upgrade at a Verizon store rather than an authorized third party retailer as well. I may be wrong but I think I read that here somewhere.

If you used an upgrade for the Charge, you most likely won't be eligible to upgrade. You'll either have to pay full retail, do an alternate upgrade if you have another upgrade eligible line, or open a new line. As long as you already have unlimited data with the Charge and activate the phone on that line, you should be good though.

I am actually planning on getting it from an authorized retailer. When I talked to the guy there yesterday he confirmed that I could keep my unlimited plan. It's a big authorized retailer though, so not sure if it would be different for other ones.

As long as you're switching directly from your old smartphone to your new one you should be fine. ;)

imo, the only way to go is to do it on the vzw site. that way you can see what you're getting.

You can be upgraded at Bestbuy or Verizon or any third-party retailers, as long as you keep a true data phone on that line and never switch to a "dumb" phone you will always have the unlimited data no matter how many devices you switch through.

Good news then. What about am on line retailer such as Amazon? They sometimes offer some pretty good deals.

I would assume its the same, all the retailers use certian programs (bestbuy uses BEAST) to link into carrier systems and update lines and resign new contracts. As long as you dont put a "dumb" phone or cancel your data on that line you should be grandfathered in everywhere

The key is that, if you currently have an unlimited data plan, to not change plans at any time. It doesn't matter if you're upgrading your device, changing your minutes plan or text message plan, etc. Just do not change your data plan and it will remain in place with your device upgrade. I've had many, many conversations with VZW phone and store reps about this and it is pretty straightforward.

Side question, I want to upgrade my wife who has a droidx with unlimited data. Does unlimited cover 3g & 4g? Since my wife only has a 3g phone.
Thanks

yes it carries over as long as you're already on a smartphone. Doesn't matter if it's 3G or 4G

Here's another question about upgrading and keeping unlimited data...

My daughter has a Blackberry with unlimited data on Verizon. It's only one year old. She wants to upgrade to the Nexus when it comes out. She's not eligible, directly, for the upgrade price. However we have a family plan with 4 phones. My wife's phone (a dumb phone) is eligible for an upgrade that she's not going to use. My daughter will use my wife's upgrade on her phone to avoid paying full price. Will this "switch" of upgrade eligibility cause my daughter to lose unlimited data?

Re: Right way to upgrade to the Nexus without losing unlimited da

The only way to lose unlimited data is to activate a non-smartphone on the line that has unlimited for a 14 day period. So if you put an LG Voyager or something like that on the line that has unlimited, you have 14 days to figure out the mistake you made and fix it. Otherwise, you're good.

No it shouldn't because all you are doing is moving the upgrade to the daughter's line and the daughter's upgrade gets moved to your wife's line.

They had this major issue with the Talk, Text, and Data promo when the iPhone came to Verizon. When I was going to upgrade to the Thunderbolt I had the Storm and was worried about losing my Talk, Text, and Data promo so I called the promo line and they said that they fixed the issue.

It used to be that there was a smartphone data plan, a BlackBerry data plan, and a feature phone data plan. Now it's just smartphone or feature phone. So as long as you keep the same type of phone (smartphone if you have a smartphone or feature phone if you have a feature phone) then you'll keep your unlimited data.

You see this is exactly what I'm talking about - Verizon can be very, VERY shifty when it comes to upgrading your phone. When I went from a Blackberry to an Android, even though I had unlimited data already I still had to "update" my data plan. I can understand that, but this is when they don't tell you they also "updated" it to a tiered plan. They can, and will, be sneaky bastards at any given opportunity.

So what I'm afraid of is hearing something along the lines of "oh, we need to update you from an LTE card to a MicroLTE card." I give the OK, and now "oh by the way, we couldn't update the card without resetting your plans so now you're magically on a tiered and there's no way to go back".

For the most part yes, it does seem straightforward and I don't actually think any of these problems will come true (again). But having been in this situation before and having gone through the numerous phone calls trying to fix their errors, I'm skeptical that where there's a will to screw us over, there's a way to screw us over.

Grandfathering also works if moving from a Blackberry device? I just reviewed my bill online and it says "CORP Email & Data Unlim". I only worry because I recall seeing someone say that that grandfathering thing may not apply to someone with a Blackberry. Doesn't make sense to me why that would be the case. I just want to be prepared if I have to do battle with some VZW hack.
