How does the overall speed of this ROM compare to stock? I'm basically looking for a ROM for my wife and daughter's phone that doesn't stray far from stock. Basically, remove bloatware, free up some memory, and speed things up a bit. It seems this ROM is ideal for what I'm looking for and wondered about how much internal storage is freed up along with performance improvements...

Great questions... Overall the ROM is peppier than the stock rom because it is overclocked by about 25% from stock. Also the kernel is more efficient than the stock kernel due to optimizations that were done in the kernel. You can read more about the kernel here: Overclock Android picasticks kernel for Sprint Optimus S | lyncd.com

EDIT: And there is 122 MBs of internal storage after a fresh flash. Thats slightly less than the stock ROM. The stock ROM with all of the updated apps (Market, gmail, maps) and super user and wifi tether installed is about 127MBs.

Hope this helps.

First, thanks for the information and thanks for putting this ROM together! I've download the JDK and Android SDK. (plus your ROM). I'm just waiting on the phone to come back that I'm going to root. Daughter took off on me... As soon as she gets back, I'll get it rooted and let you know how it goes.

Another question/observation -- don't know if it is interesting to you/your ROM or not... Please understand it is just my observation and in no way a critique. :)

The Droid Eris is a similar phone by HTC a couple of years ago. One of the aftermarket ROMs moved dalvik from one location to another -- basically in an area that was "reserved" but not used by any big degree. In doing so, it freed up a TON of internal space... By no means am I one to be telling others how to develop, but I just wanted to pass this along in the event that there is something similar going on in the Optimus S... It's called cache2cache and is in the ROM called xtrSense 5.01. ZachXTR is the dev on it and his ROM absolutely FLIES over the stock one...

here's the description from the ROM:

Cache Location (Cache2cache):
By default, the dalvik-cache has been relocated from the internal /data/dalvik-cache/ directory to the internal /cache/dalvik-cache directory. The Eris comes with an internal /cache/ file block of 130mb that is not used! After reviewing a number of xda member file system usage reports (thanks xtrROM and xtrSENSE users!) the MOST reported use of this space was 5%... So by moving the dalvik-cache to this free area you now have over 150mb on internal /data/ for apps and over 75mb in internal /cache/ for dalvik-cache. This means that you can probably install close to 75 apps WITHOUT having to partition and move anything to the SD Card ext!

You can also move the dalvik-cache to your sd card ext or back to the stock internal /data/ file block.

Again, thanks for your efforts in putting this together. Hopefully I'll have a chance to root her phone in a couple of hours. Oh yeah, I like the built-in ad blocking. ;)

No, I really appreciate that suggestion. I was contemplating this tweak in a future release but wasnt sure if it was worth it... I think it would be... Thanks!

I think ReBorn does this

I think so, too, but I'm really interested in a ROM that has strayed no-so-far from stock as my wife and daughter aren't tinkerers...

I'm going to give this one a good, long test drive and see where it goes.

Ok so not to sound like a ******... But isn't this just like shell Rom with ad blocker and WiFi widget and pica kernel? It just strikes me as a spin off of shell. Also u mentioned not giving critiques in the thread. I see the forum threads as a perfect place to voice thought or questions. How else does one know if someone else has asked or sugested similar thoughts concerns or ideas... Ok. That's my $.02

They seem to be working for me. What do you mean by fail?
Well I believe I got two diff error messages. At the moment I can only remember one. "can not download. The size of the item could not be determined". Each time download gets past 90%. Using reborn v 2. 2. Downloading straight to SD card with download all files. And yes there's plenty of room on my card. I'm at work right now. The WiFi is spotty. But when I get home ill download with my pc and nand to a diff Rom if I have too and try again.

Strange. If it fails at home let me know and I can mirror to drop box... Sorry for the issue. It could very well be the hosting. GoDaddy has done stranger things on me. IM also going to try to download on phone. I was only trying from the PC. I will let you know if I have issues that way.

Also what browser are you using on your phone?

Thanks man and its the stock browser.

I'll upload it to a diff host when I get home tonight.

EDIT: Wow this is really wierd... I downloaded it no issue at all using Opera Mini over 3G. But when i try it with stock browser it fails right away. Very odd.

So does shell ROM ;)

I think its funny how u selectively ignore my post. This should of been posted as a Xerox of shell with Sprint taken out and some other market apps added. Congrats on that

lol, yeah, I think its funny too :D And your welcome!

But to answer your initial question...

Yes it is similar to Shell, exactly the same thing actually. Except not really, its different. Read my OP and you will have specifics then you can compare them to ShellROM OP. But in case you dont want to do that...

My ROM has the updated Googles apps noted, it uses a diff kernel which adds over clocking, it does have the updated host file and I did not remap any buttons... But yeah... Its a Xerox... You know.. Except its different.

Just giving users options... We're all about choices here :) lol

I've seen users get banned for doin the same and asking not to critique on Ur thread is extra bogus. Options yes... Ripping off others hard work No.

Dang. This community needs to grow. This ROM was EXACTLY what I was looking for. Almost stock. Overclocked. Remove Sprint Bloat. Ad Blocking. I just happened to click on the link and it described what I was looking for... I appreciate the fact that there are other options (including CM7 variants), but this is my first stop. Thanks, Scrosler!

I managed to root using a combination of gingersnap one click and adb to push Xinonia. Following I flashed Clean1.2.

It seems quick but I need to Titanium my daughter's apps back and I don't have her password. She'll be back shortly and I'll complete the installation and provide feedback in a bit. Right out of the gate, it looks positive.

Thanks again... will update soon.

I installed opera but the download wouldn't even start. So I tried the stock browser again this time it worked. Hmm I downloaded over the WiFi network at my house (not as spotty) the only thing I noticed that was any diff was that when it wouldn't download the file was named simply download. Zip when it did work it had the right filename. Weird. I'm going to flash now. :-)

From the Shell ROM Thread:

"Alright, so this is going to be a extremely stripped down ROM that only has the essentials to run android. I will use our LG froyo as a base. The point of this ROM is to emphasize battery life, not speed."

That's not what I was looking for. I wanted overclocked. I know that means less battery, but it means a zippier phone. That's what Clean was described as and what pulled me toward it more than anything else. That said, why did you come here to give this particular dev grief? If he copied your source and didn't give credit, that's one thing... but I believe this entirely another.

Just my .02 after having ROMd (multiple times) a Droid X, Droid Incredible, HTC Evo, and now Optimus S. I'm certainly no expert but have found that many ROMs have just a little bit different things to offer and I enjoy the different variants -- even if they are slight.
