ROM and App tamering...

OK. I recently started learning java and enjoying the wonders of android. My first idea was to mess with the MMS.apk from AOKP's new build. I used root browser lite and copied the package to my ex sdcard and then moved the APK to my computer. I used android multi tool and I first hit "extract apk" but the files came out encrypted. So I changed my choice to "optimize images inside" and this gave me the files so I could edit them. I edited one string in /res/drawable/listitem_background.xml

Just to see what would happen I changed "green" to "blue". Then I used the multi tool and used "zip apk" it said it was unsigned so I signed it... But option 4 says "sign apk (do do this if its a system app)" so I chose option 12 (sign apk) and moved it to /system/app and overwrote my apk there. I rebooted and it said there was a parsing error. But I only changed one word...


Onto the ROM part. If I unzipped a ROM (such as my AOKP rom) and tried changing codes to how I want them and zipped it back and used recovery and installed it can I brick my phone? I would only change small things like what some things say and make it original.

Is there any place you know of to help my with things of this nature?
