Dumb question time. Do I have to wipe everything when flashing a kernel?

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus by way of Tapatalk

No question's a dumb question! ;)

And no. I suggest wiping cache/dalvik, but franco has an app that auto-flashes for you (it's a $2 donation, but well, well worth it). I don't believe the app wipes a thing.

I wipe b/c I'm generally paranoid lol

Thanks for the help. By the way, when do you sleep? I work 3rd shift so I'm up all night. I noticed you are up most of the night too and you seem to be on all the time....

I have the grave and lucky misfortune of working from home during the summer, so I'm on relentlessly lol

Right on. Again thanks for the help. I just downloaded francos kernel and flashed the newest nightly.

No problem. Make sure you flash the 384mhz GPU version; the 512 works for some, doesn't work for others. Too risky IMHO. Franco is one of the most dedicated devs out there, bar none, and he always fixes his issues quickly and professionally. His app is top notch too, and I like it b/c it's like my GN has a little "brain" app lol.

That's the one I went with. I hope it works. The battery life is my only complaint about the Nexus

Francos should impress. Performance is top notch, and tho I don't pay much attention to battery life, I know it's always been best for me on francos.

I'm kinda wondering if I should switch to the Franco kernel, myself... I've been using AOKP + leankernel, and it's been good enough. Yesterday, though, I flashed leankernel 3.8 (I was on 3.7 prior), as well as the radios from the 4.0.4 update, and now my battery seems slightly worse than before. Not sure if that's because of the radios or the kernel, though. Hm.

Anyway, I saw a video of some new feature for AOKP, where you can have "swipeable widgets". That seemed kinda neat; is that out now, in the latest build (B37?) or is that coming in a future build?

Presumably a future build; I'm running a rom based on M5, and I certainly don't have it.

As for kernels, LeanKernel has never done anything for me, while franco has always been solid. I can't recommend it--or his app--enough.

Plus, you can flash LK through his app, so if you want to switch back and forth it's as easy as can be :).

Quick question.... What are some of the settings you use to make it the "fastest, butteriest combos out there" ?

Have been using this setup with every franco kernel I've used, except the ones with the turtle governor. I also have my Nova speeds on faster than light.

Do you mess with the CPU voltages by any chance?

And thanks for the quick reply.

Nah, too paranoid to be honest. Messing with the cpu is one thing; messing with the juice is another.

I trust franco because he's tested this stuff relentlessly. But, on the other hand, I like a bit more oomph.

And no problemo ;-)

I think that's why I was hesitant with undervolting, and I'm glad I had a lesson learned. I had undervolted my nexus last week and last friday something freaky happened. The Nexus kept switching from charging and discharging even though the unit was actually discharging. Of course you know, this drained the battery rather fast. I reflashed stock to see if that might have been the issue, but it wasn't. I switched out batteries, that didn't solve the issue either. Came to the conclusion something hardware related got jacked up.

Thankfully, I was still under warranty and reflashed stock back on there before returning the device and getting a new Nexus.

Once again, lesson learned... always good to be cautious... .this time i'm going to read every detail before messing with the Kernel.

Thanks.

Yeah there's no quicker way to invoke cthulhu than by undervolting too aggressively for its own good.

That being said, people do it and do it successfully. Start with small increments, be conservative, and you'll be fine.

I just figured to leave undervolting alone and stick with the settings you have if it does improve life and speed. I've had amazing results in the past with AOKP, so i'm not too worried.

Thanks again.

Undervolting on your own is more hassle than its worth. Every phone is different, all silicon is not made equal, and it involves a bunch of trial and error to gain a tad more battery life. Don't stress yourself with it.
