ROM Manager: Do You Use It?

If I did, would it help my boot time? Is there a guide for changing from CWM to TWRP?
I have been thinking about it for a while but I haven't had any issues with CWM so didn't see the point.
Why did an update change my boot time?

If you're on JB, it probably did a "dirty" reboot that triggered an extensive file system check. Basically, if you use a program like franco's updater, and you auto flash, well, that type of "quick" shut down will trigger more extensive than usual file system checks. Hence auto flashing in franco takes a bit longer than downloading the zip and flashing the kernel manually.

For TWRP, check the CWM v. TWRP thread. You can download it as a flashable zip and flash it in CWM.

The difference, I think, is that apps can (and have, in my case) locked up. I had RM lock up on my DINC going to restore it. Sent my phone into all sorts of hell. Going into recovery removes that risk.

Now, with devices that we have now, that's a lesser concern, but still a concern. The last thing you want is that thing to freeze, FC, etc. during a critical step--and it's happened.

Remember, rooting is very risk in and of itself. So I'd rather preach "eliminate all risk" rather than "be ok with some risk, so long as some steps become easy."

I understand the risk avoidance. Makes sense. But a lot of time has elapsed between DINC and now. Maybe RM has improved since then.

OTOH, if risk avoidance is the goal then why root and unlock?

Because I want the newest and best software at any given moment in time. With it comes risk, some of which (and I'd argue--almost all of it) can be eliminated by understanding the mechanics of what's going on--hence doing it manually as opposed to letting an app do it :).

Just from my experience with RM going back to the my DINC days to now, it has actually gotten worse. I got the nexus (coming from my DINC) so the crack flashing habit of mine went quicker and smoother. Only to have RM somehow complicate everything I was trying to do that was supposed to made simpler. Of course that was before I even heard about TWRP and this forum which has opened my eyes to a whole new world of nerd.
