ok so i just rooted my phone using z4 successfully. i also backed up all my apps with titanium backup successfully. then i downloaded clockwork recovery successfully. but when i try to back up my current rom in rom manager, it acts like its going to... but just reboots and takes me back to my unlock screen. so i just went to install custom rom from sd card ( where i have the apex 1.3.1 downloaded and ready to go) and it asked if i want to back up rom and wipe data/cashe before installing, so i checked both boxes and proceeded. but it did the same thing, just rebooted my phone. didnt install apex or back up current rom? whats going on? what am i missing?

edit: tried again, its still rebooting. for whatever reason it wont go into clockwork mod recovery?

found it , although it was 2.00... it is hanging up at authorizing purchase.... geeesh

just a bit of advice, because I have been there, rom manager is OK but I would suggest you visit the dev's site once you find a rom you like and follow their instructions on how to install. bypass rom manger.
there are very specific instructions in those posts that will help ensure that you get a good working install.
It's also important to know how to install a rom manually, without rom manager, because at some point you'll probably need to.

thanks, i actually did bypass it. i downloaded bootstrap recovery ( apparently you need that for the droid x because of a locked bootloader) and just installed it manually from clockwordmod. pretty easy. and i am now running apex1.3.1 and love it. now i wanna learn more about overclocking and underclocking. thanks though!

when you get into all that overclocking stuff, be aware that while your phone may work when you initially change the settings, if you start getting random reboots occasionally it is probably due to the over/underclocking.
my dx will reboot 1 or 2 times a day if i change the clock speed or voltage at all. up or down. if i run at stock i'm 100% stable.
some phones are more tolerant than others though.

good to know... thanks. my dad actually runs a droid 1 overclocked at 1ghz... and he gets random reboots all the time, now i know why... lol.

Thats only one possible reason for random reboots. Other common reasons are a corrupted file/filesystem on the sd card, and app incompatibility. In adition to overclocking/underclocking, the voltage the processor is running on has a lot to do with how stable it is. You can have a stable system at 1 ghz running at stock voltage, or you can undervolt it to try and save battery, and if you undervolt it too much, end up with a system that reboots at times.
