If you want to just have a "Standard Edition" you can just flash the midNIGHT ROM v5.2 Standard UPGRADE.zip" and you will be good to go. I have tested both versions. Both seem very stable and quick. Hopefully battery life is better since I removed a ton of background apps.

FYI: There is a HOW TO video for installing this ROM along with CW3 on my blog as well. Look on the Android Development page. Please keep in mind that the ROM being flashed in this video is not the v2.7 but the process is the exact same. Also I skipped the wipes prior to flashing to save time.

PTFdMedic:

Would you be able to tell me the name of the following apks that I had installed with midNIGHT 4.0:

1. Gas Gauge style battery meter
2. Launcher that is identical to stock, except that the bottom row was 5 across with an apps icon in the middle and the others customizable (Found this one! I guess it helps to install one thing at a time so you can see what it does!)

Thanks for the hard work!

@HeyBeerManTX and everyone else...

I saw this posted in the OP of ptfdmedic's other thread here.

ALL SUPPORT WILL BE GIVEN AT THE XDA ONLY
So maybe all of you with a few pokes to him on Twitter or PM him at XDA, or his FB account can let him know how much you would all like having him here at Android Central to occasionally stop in to answer questions and give some added support. It would be of a great benefit to you the users and to him, for support of his ROM.

Thanks.

The Gas Gauage battery meter, is going to be part of the framework-res.apk. So you would need to find the "theme" or ROM that he used on midNIGHT 4.0 that had that particular battery mod in it and use that framework-res.apk. Battery mods are not a separate ".apk" that can just be pulled and put into an existing theme/setup. I wish it was that simple to have battery mods in a easily transferable ".apk" but unfortunately they are built into the framework-res.apk found in your "/system/framework/" directory.

I need some help understanding this. How is BYOR 5.2 Journaling ON Ext4 different from 5.2 Standard Ext 4?

Regardless of which route your take with this version(s) you will have journaling enabled.

One method in this thread of downloads offered is the BYOR which is stripped down to the basics, and I mean basics and then you build it however you please with the apps he has provided to flash separately.

The other package "standard edition upgrade" is a normal ROM setup how ptfdmedic would if it was a normal built custom ROM with his selected options for apps.

Nothing tricky, still journaling enabled no matter which direction you take he us just giving you "options" and how to enjoy your ROM, your way.

He might be recommending the Odin process to start with a fresh setup so no prior conflicts will arise.

I just wiped 3x and flashed 5.2 Journal ON over top 5.2 Journal OFF. Can someone tell me if they are experiencing any GPS issues w/this ROM? It sometimes gets stuck in Navigation App w/"Searching for GPS" and I often have to reboot to get it to work. I am able to get a perfect stick when I launch the Maps App, but when I launch other apps that use the GPS (Poynt, Where, etc.), I can't lock get a lock.
Today was the first time I experienced the phone cutting off by itself also.

Any help???

I just flashed this ROM. I decided to ignore the advice and did NOT Odin back to EC05. I'm still running EB13 with the EC05 modem flashed in and this ROM is running perfectly for me so far. In fact, it's running really, really well (only been a couple hours at this point though). It seems booting up is a bit slow, and any apps, wallpapers etc. that are on the SD card take almost 5 minutes before I can access them now. However, once it does finally get things loaded up, the phone is wonderfully smooth, loading apps, everything happens very quickly. I think as was mentioned before that the advice to ODIN back to stock EC05 is more precautionary than anything, and realistically is what I would still recommend as it's what the author says to do, but if you do get lazy like me chances are it will work fine just flashing it like you normally would, assuming you have the EC05 modem. I'll report back after I've used it a bit longer on stability, battery life, and what have you, but I'm optimistic so far.

Well, over 24 hours running it now. It's perfect. No, really, it is. Performance is just insane, at 1ghz it feels smoother and faster than SRF at 1.4ghz. Stability is flawless. No FC's*,no freezes, nothing. It just works. Most stable ROM I've used since ACE. Battery life is decent. Nothing spectacular, but not bad by any means either. Until Gingerbread4 comes out, this is my ROM unless something suddenly falls apart like what started happening to me with SRF. I think the lack of journaling is what was causing my problems with SRF, which was fine at first then started having a lot of FC's and freezes later, which just kept getting worse with every battery pull for obvious reasons. MidNIGHT has given me the most flawless experience I've had with this phone: It has simply astounding performance coupled with rock solid reliability, and this is with me ignoring the dev's instructions and installing it on EB13 (EC05 modem) straight from SRF without an ODIN to stock EC05. Just wiped and installed like any other ROM, then restored apps with Mybackup, which you also aren't really supposed to do lol. AMAZING work by the dev. This transformed my phone into an incredible machine.

*I did get a couple FCs from the Gmail app, but I attribute that to me having restored my apps via Mybackup. After uninstalling and reinstalling the app from the market, it's been perfect.

Here's my experience.

Have had Midnight 5.02 BYOR Journaling running for about a week. For the first couple of days, didn't load much besides the bare-bones 5.02, except for certain evaluation tools. Ran very smooth. As indicated above, battery life is nothing to shout about but decent. Kept is clocked at 1.0 mhz (no overclocking the kernal -- I found that overclocking to 1.2 mhz doubled the battery drain -- cut battery life in half).

Started customizing and themeing mid-week (Bionic Black, Desktop Visualizer, Better Cut, and several widgets) just for fun. Battery life proportionally went down quickly as I increased themeing, and eventually got unbearable. Started to also get some instability with FC's and stuttering.

Backed way-off the customizing yesterday. Now currently using Bionic Black with tweaks, Zeam Launcher, Simi Clock and Calendar Widgets, and Simi Folders. Still have a couple of FCs with some lame games, but otherwise Midnight is back to being smooth and snappy. Recalibrated the battery last night, and today got 13 hours with light/moderate use (2 push sync email accounts, 1 push sync calendar, 1 push sync task app, about an hour of phone calls, some music listening on Tune-In Radio, and 1.5 hours of total display time, 2.5 hours of time without sleeping). Not bad, given my experience with other ROMs. Would never last under my normal business use day (today was a vacation day). We'll see on Monday ... it'll likely dip to 7-8 hours.

Just want to say "thanks" to Rob for all his work on this ROM. Please read his blog (lostandtired.com). As a father of two young boys, I could only weep as I read Rob's powerful message about the silent struggles so many parents go through with their children ... and his special case of children with Austism. Also, NPR has a great series on Autistic Kids (NPR - Autistic Kids). Much respect Rob to you and your family's courage.

OK, so I have been keeping this ROM current back since 3.?, however with the last update to 5.2, I started getting nothing but FCs on all the "stock" mail apps within the midNight Extras folder, and a constant launcher conflict. So I decided to start clean and see if that helps. I wound up doing the following:

1. Odin back to EB13
2. Manual update to EC05
3. One Click root Clockwork 3.0
4. Flash midNight ROM

....everything is ok until the ROM install, where it hangs on the "Samsung" screen. I've tried this a half dozen times, and every time I'm forced to pull the battery.

So, I tried:
1. Odin back to EB13
2. Manual update to EC05
3. One Click root Clockwork 2.(whatever)
4. One Click root Clockwork 3.0
5. Flash SyndicateROM Frozen (tried with midnight again, but same thing; I wanted to see if another ROM would install properly up to this point, and after a couple attempts, it appears it has. When I tried installing syndicateROM without doing Clockwork 2.(whatever) first, I got a weird "double boot screen logo" situation that cause restarts once the screen timed out.)

I'm going to redownload the midnight ROM file, and try ONE more time.

You can skip the OneClickRoot for 2.5.1.0, that is not needed if your going to EXT4.
Just go right to the EXT4 conversion OCR package.

Going through OneClickRoot 2.5.1.0 was how I was able to "cure" the double "boot animation"/shutdown issue. I tried going straight through first. I know....doesn't really make sense, but that's what worked.

I'm still downloading a new .zip for midNight 5.2 (slow aircard!) and will try going back through the process again. If it doesn't work, I don't know what else to try.
