i dont know if this question has been asked before...so go easy on me if it has :) i know that the optimus v comes stock with the froyo rom. i personally have upgraded to harmonia 1.7.1 which i believe is still a froyo rom. i've seen gingerbread (bobzhome and iho come to mind) and even some honeycomb (honey 2.3.7) roms out there. my question is this: are the gingerbread and honeycomb roms out right now real...or just a re-badged, supped up or whatever version of the froyo rom? i fell for a version of the ics rom a couple days ago until someone pointed out here that it was basically a themed rom and not the real thing. lol. thanks

so its safe to assume that there are legit froyo and gb roms, but no honeycomb...let alone ics :)

The Froyo based ROMs are based off the stock ROM with modifications, and a kernel built from modified LG source.

The Gingerbread based ROMs are based off CyanogenMod, which is Gingerbread, but due to the lack of open source documentation, a few of the libraries are taken from the stock Froyo ROM. This works because Gingerbread is the natural upgrade path from Froyo. There are currently two basic Gingerbread builds for the Optimus V, aospbot's aospCMod, and the IHO-Kangs of CM7 (the main ones are BACKside, BobZhome, and mrg666's Mirage).

The Honeycomb and ICS "themed" ROMs were originally built off the BACKside-IHO ROM, but now are being themed in the source code for IHO.

Terminology-
Froyo = Android 2.2 (what the stock Optimus V comes preloaded with)
Gingerbread = Android 2.3 (what the new Optimus S comes preloaded with)
Honeycomb = Android 3.0, the OS made for tablets (closed source till recently)
ICS = Ice Cream Sandwich, the OS to unify tablets and phones (source code recently released)
CM7 = CyanogenMod7, the most widely used source for custom Android ROMs
IHO = inferiorhumanorgans, the code repository established by Blarf (Alex) to build CM7 for the OV
