wiping data and cache. what exactly does that do. i've been hearing those words for years but never really got around to knowing what they mean. does it mean it will erase all my apps i have installed?

Wiping data removes all your third party applications and user data in the settings and stock apps and the cache are just junk files.

For anybody who doesn't know how to flash roms or doesn't know how to flash manually (without rom manager don't it automatically, which I highly recommend doing it manually), pay attention to the stickies later today.

I have been working on a guide since sunday (would have been up sooner but this week has been a busy one) and it has everything explained for you step by step.

the biggest reason i rooted is to get better battery life, so if anyone can help me out with how to do that i would really appreciate it.

No matter what rom I flash, I use titanium pro to freeze the bloat apps I dont want running and sucking the life out of my battery, works good for me

I don't see a big difference in battery life from using different Rom except CM7 which maybe a little better. Your best bet to improve your battery life would be to download SetCPU from the market. Here is a link that will explain everything you need to know to use it. SetCPU for Root Users

Just remember underclocking to much could freeze your phone.

Hope this helps and if you have any question just ask.

CM7 with the invis/slayher .37 kernel has been giving me great battery life. On a 3500 battery I came off the Charger at 7:00am on Thursday and was at 70% Friday 7:00 AM, 25% at 6:00 PM on Friday with my normal usage. Plus I was in bad coverage for most of Friday so that put an extra drain on the battery.

this is probably a dumb question but how do i make a nandroid backup? sorry for all the questions just trying to not mess up my phone

The easiest way would be through Rom Manager which in the market if you don't have it. In RM scroll down to backup current Rom and select it then you will see a date/time which will be the name of your backup unless you change it (if you change it make sure you don't include any spaces) and then press ok. Your phone will then make the back up and reboot when finished. Or you can boot into recovery and select backup/restore and select backup and that will do the same. Making backup can really save you if you mess your phone up and they are easy to restore to using RM or booting into recovery.

ahh ok, i was already doing that. i thought nandroid was some sort of special app you make a backups with or something.

So what Rom did you decide to go with?
to be honest with you i still don't really know what all these roms do so i'm just flashing whatever roms i see on the rom manager app and so far i've only been able to use Uncommon Sense. I tried using the MIUI one but it got stuck in a boot loop. and right now i just downloaded Myn's Warm Two Point Two RLS5.3. so if you can help me on knowing which rom to get, what they do or what kernel means i would really appreciate it.

Hmmm, I don't know why MIUI would throw you in a boot loop. Thats the same place I downloaded mine from. Did you download warttacks version?

As far as kernels go, here's the link for the wiki definition Kernel (computing) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

i probably screwed it up myself. i dl'd it from the rom manager i just chose the first on the list.
also to install from sd card do i drag and drop the zip file to the sd card or do i open the zip file and drop all the folders in the sd card??

Don't unzip the file. Just drag the zip file to the root of your sdcard and flash in recovery after you wipe.
