Root 1.16.00.0223r

I just picked up a new Thunderbolt to replace the one that keeps rebooting. The replacement does not have the OTA MR1 installed and I would like to root it. Is there a way to root the 1.16.00.0223r without installing the MR1 update? I know the autoroot function downgrades and then installs MR1.

I think you can root it with the current method, then downgrade from mr1 to the pre-update version, just make sure to flash the version with root access or you will go back to s-on.
