[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EB13 w/Optional EXT4

GREAT work once again from the developers!!! This process works flawlessly.

I've read through the posts on here and have seen that some are having problems. It always helps to PRINT out the procedures so that you can reference them on paper. Read over the process, at least twice, prior to doing anything. Be sure you have all the files needed to complete this operation and that they are in their proper locations.

If at first you dont succeed, read over the process and see what you may have missed. The steps are cut and dry. Follow them without skipping any steps... Enjoy.

Read through this post but did see anyone having this issue after they rooted and applied ext4.

I used the Downloaded Samsung tool (.exe) from Samsung website and then performed steps 1 and 2 with almost no hitches.

But noticed that when streaming music via Bluetooth the sound would drop and then come back on a regular basis missing a few seconds or less of music. Annoying as heck. So I redeployed the update using the download from Samsung and just left it stock and the problem disappeared. Streams perfectly. That is where I'm currently at. I'm going to turn logging on in Rhapsody to see what I capture on the way home tonight, then root the phone. Then try it again tomorrow and capture the log again. Then apply the ext4 conversion and capture more logs. Might give a hint if I see the issue again.

If anyone has seen this and has a fix please let me know.

EXT4 kernel breaks bluetooth functionality. Until we get an updated kernel, if you need bluetooth, stay on RFS.

Thanks!!! I really do appreciate the quick response and the work everyone is doing here. New to Android and there is a ton of info to go through, but lovin' it!!!

Quick Advice Needed.

Ok, so I installed the FROYO update via the ZIP file from Samsungs web site. Next, I rooted, no problem. Now I made the mistake of removing apps that are not needed, BUT I think I did things I should not of. So, my question, can I just RERUN the ZIP file and do a FRESH update to FROYO, then re-root etc. If not, I want to keep all my original(pre froyo update). How can this be achieved? THANKS!

Now, I'm confused as all get out. There is talk here about the One Click Root, and previously somewhere here about ODIN. I installed the Leaked DK28 but I don't think I rooted my phone. I used a process here and it worked; I think it was ODIN. Now, I would like to have the new EB13 but I'm confused about how to go about this. There appears to be too many ways to go about this. I would be happy enough going back to the original and then let Sprint/Samsung do the updating for me. Can I do that? Can someone provide a link to specific instructions?

I did the same thing. I was running DK28 ended up manually installing EB13 from Samsung's website. Copying the update.zip file on the SD card method will not work as the update/upgrade version only works with phones running DI18.

Download the large 200 MB file (Installing requires Windows)

Samsung

Also download the USB drivers.
Install USB Drivers, then run the Epic4G_FroyoUpgrade_EB13_Tool from Samsung.
My computer was not recognizing phone at first when it asked me to connect device. Other people have similar issues, you are not alone. Some people blame the cable. I used my micro USB cable from my retired Palm Pre.
Plugging and unplugging the USB cable on different ports in the back of my PC until it recognized the device helped. It took me 3 attempts before it recognized the Samsung device.

Let the software do its magic and you will have EB13 installed.
Then follow the steps in the beginning of this thread to root. It worked for me.

Hey ragnarokx,

I see this: [ROM][STOCK] EB13 - Deodexed Update from DI18 | Pre-rooted | ADDED VOICE DIAL FIX - xda-developers

which says: "[ROM][STOCK] EB13 - Deodexed Update from DI18 | Pre-rooted | ADDED VOICE DIAL FIX"

FIX: Voice Dialer fix: http://efragtv.com/android/eb13voicedialfix.zip

so - will this fix the bluetooth problems you mentioned ?

please advice....

I believe that fix requires an odexed (not able to be themed, stock) ROM. To get EXT4, you must first flash a deodexed (able to be themed, altered) ROM. The fix can probably be tweaked to work with a deodexed system, but AFAIK it has not been as of now.

thanks a lot man !!

not like i understood everything you said there.... but basically - EXT4 hack - still breaks bluetooth...

thanks! i will probably wait for this to be fixed.... and then jump on it... thanks a bunch!!

appreciate all you guys hard work....

i wanna buy you guys a beer.... ur in socal as well right?

That's not necessary, but thank you! I appreciate the offer :)

If you use Odin and like the .tar file in this thread, you get a fresh install of EB13 and it will already be rooted for you.

Thanks for the reply, so if I understand correctly, if I run the program via the link, I will have a fresh start. Is there a way to keep what I have and restart? THANKS!

had 2.1 and did all the steps as you guys recommend. It worked really good, now I have 2.2.1 and EXT4... but the problem I have is with my battery draining in 2hours...

What do you mean by "break's bluetooth functionality"? I have an EXT4 setup (ACE rom, CWM 3.0), and my bluetooth headset works fine. Perhaps clarify what doesnt work with bluetooth just so we know?

The basic bluetooth functions seem to still work like placing a call with your phone then being able to set the phone down and continue the conversation with the bluetoot, I think "broken" functionality everyone is talking about is what you are supposed to get with Froyo 2.2: bluetooth dialing, better integration for new vehicles with bluetooth sync, etc.

I rooted the phone. I had done the EB13 install and everything was running great, but I wanted to see if I was using EXT4 or not so I did the 3 finger boot. Then CW began a backup and proceeded to convert to EXT on its own. Guess it was there ready to do that from before. I read that I was going to need a kernel that I didn't have, so I restored before booting the phone again and now it's hung at startup. Any advice?

I've run into this problem before, the issue is when you do the conversion to ext4....and then do the restore for whatever reason you need a rom/kernel to flash after the restore. So you need to flash a RFS rom in CWM, if you are unable to get that to work then you will probably need odin. This method with give you a rooted, deodexed with clockwork RFS/EXT4 http://forum.androidcentral.com/epi...3-pre-rooted-deodexed-clockwork-rfs-ext4.html

Ahhh ok, makes sense. Friendly suggestion to Ragnarok: maybe just mention that 2.2 bluetooth features are broken but that standard bluetooth functions (using a headset, listening to music via stereo headset, etc) work? Not a big deal but just a little more clear, hopefully preventing people running from trying the EXT4 filesystem. I myself was ready to flash back to RFS if bluetooth didnt work in the capacity I need it to.

Hopefully that will get fixed for others, as im sure it might be a pain for those who heavily utilize bluetooth..

Happened to me as well. My copy of ACE was a bad download and CWM wouldnt install it- luckily I had the 1.2ghz genocide kernel dual-fs sitting on my sd-card, so I flashed that and then proceeded to load the stock ROM and redownload the ACE zip.

If you have access to a microSD to usb converter (many laptops have them, or perhaps you have an adapter to USB or to regular SD?), you can just throw an EXT4 capable ROM/kernel on it and put it back in the phone. CWM should load fine and then just flash it in- saves you from having to use Odin.
