[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EB13 w/Optional EXT4

Yeah, as a little warning. I was stock, EC05 and I one click rooted with this. I had already had the dual kernel in my root drive from my previous ext4'ing.

Anyways, all was going good with EC05 and then I booted into CWM and it converted me to EXT 4 right away. Woopsie. Phone died after that. Now back to running Baked Snake 2.2. Not sure what the moral of the story is, delete the dual kernel if your keeping stock so it doesn't convert if you go into CWM...

Your filesystem was converted to EXT4 because you booted into ClockworkMod3 - your kernel has nothing to do with the conversion itself.

Hey, I'm sure many have asked this, but I cannot find it anywhere with a straight answer..

I followed this root method after manually updating to EB13 when it was first released. Everything went fine and the phone runs perfectly, but now I'm being prompted to update to EC05 on my phone. What should I do? Will the update disable the root? Will it be fine and keep the root? Will I have to root again? Can I use this method on EC05?

Please help..

Thanks

1.) I personally haven't attempted the OTA update while rooted. During my testing for the OTA I was stock EB13 and stock Eclair when I recieved both notices. We do say that you should be able to do the OTA update while rooted as long as you haven't removed any bloatware or installed any custom ROMs. 3rd party apps will not matter..

2.) If you do accept the OTA update and it fails, I would be prepared to Odin back to stock EB13 and then within probably 5-15 minutes of booting up on fresh stock EB13 you should get the OTA pushed to you again. Otherwise if you don't feel like waiting we have the "update.zip" method available in the thread below for you to download. Its only 13.3 mb and will take a few minutes to upgrade.

3.) Yes you will loose root when you upgrade, if successful so you will have to root again.

4.) Yes you can use the same methods to root EC05 as you did with EB13. Same programs, same process...

Thanks a lot! I appreciate it.

A little help needed.

I used Odin and now have the official EB13. I followed all the directions but this root process isn't working. Keep getting stuck after I run the run.bat, either stops and says phone not connected (even though USB debugging is on) or goes through a short list of "unable to finds". I uninstalled/reinstalled drivers, rebooted phone, all the things over and over. no results. Im very new to this whole rooting thing but Im trying to learn via lots of forum research.

I was recently using the new EC05 I downloaded OTA, is there an easier way? I can always reinstall ECO5, but what about ext4 and all that? I never new my epic could be so confusing

Phone is now bricked.. :(

First shut down any and all virus scanners/spyware detectors on your computer.

Pull your battery.

Leave it out of the phone and connect to your device via cable and then you boot into Download Mode.

Your computer at this point should recognize the device (phone) in Odin by lighting up yellow in the COM ID slot.

Then at this point you should consider returning to stock Froyo EB13 or Eclair 2.1 (DI18) and once your successful you can weigh your options on what to do next. At that point I would recommend using one of the two update.zip methods (depending on which OS you Odin back to) to update.

The Odin packages for Froyo EB13 or Eclair 2.1 (DI18) can be found at the link below. Procedure #1 is Froyo EB13, Procedure #2 is Eclair.

[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

I did the "Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)" procedure and then the "Froyo EC05 Prerooted/CWM v2.5.1.0 RFS (Odexed)" and that fixed it. Its working now and rooted, but lost everything.. no big deal, its mostly backed up.

Thanks

When attempting to run the OneClickRoot (run.bat) file try using a different USB port (ones on the back of the computer/laptop usually work the best). Try a different cable if you have one.

Whenever you have a failed attempt, reboot your phone and you can usually (on Windows PC machine) hit CNTRL+ALT+DELETE and bring up the Task Manager and look for the "adb.exe" process and End that process rather than having to reboot your computer.

Rooting can be tricky finding that right combination of cables/USB ports, etc. that works...

Glad you got it back.. You can always restore or redo things, a perma brick or hard brick you can't undo ;)
