[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EC05 w/Optional EXT4

Hello again,

I have, what I think is, a quick question.

I just wanted to confirm that I can use the OneClickRootCWM3-EB13.zip to convert to EXT4 and flash a compatible ROM even if I'm already rooted and running CWM 2.5.1.0 on stock EC05 or if I needed to Odin back to stock first.

As usual, thank you.

Just run the OneClickRoot for EXT4 conversion and you will be fine. Follow the directions for this as you will need a EC05 custom ROM to flash at the end of the conversion to boot. Otherwise you will be stuck at the Samsung screen if you don't flash a custom ROM.

Just as I thought, great! Maybe I am getting the hand of this...

Paul, as usual, thank you very much! :D

converting your RFS file system to EXT 4

So if you use the new updated clockwork mod 3.0 for eb 13 you do not have to flash a rom directly afterwards. You can stay with the stock rom? Just want some clarification?

you need to flash a ROM as the stock one does not support EXT4 from what I have read and been told.

Edit:
1. Unzip to your desktop.
2. Go into your phone and Go to settings->Applications->Development and turn on USB Debugging.
3. Now double click run.bat in the folder you unzipped. (If you are on linux ./run.sh from the folder)
4. Wait for everything to happen.
5. Use the THREE BUTTON METHOD to get to CWM3.
6. Wait for the conversion operation to finish.
7. DO NOT REBOOT!!!!
8. IF YOU ARE ON AN ODEXED ROM (DEFAULT OTA) THEN YOU NEED TO REFLASH A ROM AFTER THE CONVERSION!!!!!!! ODEXED ROMS DO NOT GET RESTORED PROPERLY!
9. Flash the Default Stock Dual FS kernel For EB13: http://efragtv.com/android/EB13-DUALFS-KERNEL.zip
10. Enjoy CWM 3.0.0.5/6

In the EB13 EXT/4 conversion instructions it has a deodexed version of the stock ROM which you can flash instead of a full custom ROM. Yes its still a custom ROM technically that you would be running but its basically stock EB13. There is no other options when you convert to EXT4 because it cannot be done using the OTA or manually updated EB13 stock OS.

Odin method for achieving ext 4

Just spent all day trying to get the one click root method to work without any success. Is there a way to go from ec05/rfs to ext 4 via odin?

Follow the link below, choose the package called Slightly Modded EXT4 EC05 Tar Prerooted Deodexed Zipaligned Png Optimized
Stock Pre-Rooted Deodexed Zipaligned Png Optimized EC05 Tar 4/7/2011 Fixed Both Tars

Once completed with the Odin process, do your initial boot up, shut down and then boot into CWM. Then the EXT4 conversion process will finish (takes a few minutes) and then you can wipe and flash whatever ROM you want.

Switch

My EC05 Epic is rooted using oneclickroot 2.5.5 so I think that means I'm rooted but still on RFS ... Is there any way to switch to EXT without flashing back to stock?

Yes: complete Procedure 2 with your current setup.

I have a Epic with Froyo.Ec05, using Win7 32-Bit. I've done something like this number of times and (I guess have been lucky) when an individual set up something like what you have, never received errors, etc. Now I keep getting phone is connected even following directions to the "last" letter.

I'm not used running something like this and it fails. I can't afford for this program wiping out my data. And yes, I read and follow all the directions to a "T". Don't get me wrong, I would like to follow your steps (tried at least 5 times), but they don't seem too consistant. One last question, if the Epic's (in my case) don't go through the whole process. Do I need to do anything to get it back the way it was?

1. Rooting your device will not wipe out data on your phone, it is only applying SuperUser access which is basically opening up access to Root Level files in your device and applying a "SuperUser" application which controls/allows access to root required applications.

2. Is there a particular spot in the installation your having difficulty with?

3. Normally the most common problems are drivers are not getting installed correctly, try a different USB port on your computer or a different USB cable.

4. Sometimes it does take multiple attempts to get the root to run through correctly.

5. Disable all anti virus programs while running the root application as it will cause issues with certain files and kick them out as viruses when they actually aren't.

Any more problems, questions please feel free to ask.

I have had difficulty getting the drivers to install properly after I connect the device to my computer. I ran the executable file from Samsung that said it successfully installed the drivers. but I am hesitant to run the .bat and begin root when windows says that one of the drivers is not successfully installed.

What should i do?

I am using a dell inspiron e1505 with windows 7 professional
and a samsung epic 4g with the latest froyo (2.2.1)

I will still give it a go. Either its going to work and provide root or not. I've never heard of anyone bricking a device during rooting.

I want EC05 + root + EXT4... with stock ROM ?? can I ??

hey There !!!

hows it goin man... havent pinged u since EB13 n root days... :)

(so i had manually installed EB13 on my epic n rooted... and now read thru the forums and wiped it clean and updated to EC05)

-- stuck on Procedure 2 - Step 2.

i am on EC05 now fully stock - need a suggestion from you... i am fine with everything stock - i dont wanna different ROM i guess... just need to root n need ETX4...

wat ROM to choose for EC05 EXT4 ROM... (i dont wanna overclock or anything... dunno wat odexed is... dunno wat NoCheckboarding is)

Thanks a bunch !!! :)

A custom kernel is what allows EXT4 to work, so you'll need that at the very least. When EC05 first came out, the custom kernels did not support odexed (stock) ROMs, which is why Procedure 2 was written the way it is.

However, it has been a while so it is possible things have changed with the more recent kernels. If you're feeling guinea piggish, make the follow adjustments to Procedure 2:
[INFO]On Step 2, download a custom kernel instead of a custom ROM. I would download the following for step 2 all at once so you have options during step 8: Clean kernel, Genocide kernel, Twilight kernel.

Skip Step 7 completely.

On Step 8, flash one of the kernels you downloaded. If you can't boot past the Samsung screen, go back into Clockwork and flash another one. I would recommend trying them in the order I've listed above. When you boot past the Samsung screen, you've found a winner.[/INFO]
It is possible that the above will not work at all. Worst case scenario, just Odin back to stock. If you find a kernel that works with the stock ROM, post it and I'll update Procedure 2 in case anyone else would like to do the same. Good luck.

ragnarokx... ur asking guinea pig to try all this out.... gulp - am already shaking.... (hopefully wont brick the epic :) )... i could build a hadoop cluster n run some mapreduce... sounds much easier... :D !! am trying the options u mention... will get back to you soon...

one more question - so i did back up everything with Titanium.... so once am on a stable system i can restore n all my apps n settings n data shud be back ??

Apps are fine to restore, but I would stay away from restoring settings as that is usually what gives people the most problems. And I've never heard of anyone bricking their phone converting to EXT4 so don't worry about that. Yanking the cord while flashing with Odin is usually the only way to really brick your phone.

alright here is my update: i tried what u suggested in comment #236 - Clean kernel (works - when u exit an app - OS will crash n restart) , Genocide kernel (looked scary with his warnings and voltage setting n overclocks), Twilight kernel (some what works - hangs sometimes n restarts).

so i have - gone to - [ROM][ACS] SyndicateROM Frozen 1.1.0 (Takiya) :: EC05/1.3ghz/NoCheckboarding :: 3/27 - xda-developers

:D now lets see if am any better or wat....

another question was - /data - partition - what is stored - while installing a new rom if this is wiped cleaned - what do i loose ??

/data is where all user installed apps and app data are stored. Wipe it, and you lose those. But that's what TB is for, which you said you have.
