[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EC05 w/Optional EXT4

Greetings

First off, I "lurk" around several Android sites reading and picking up the many bits and pieces of info related to rooting. This is one of the better sites I've come across, for you guys provide most excellent step by step procedures, tips, tricks, and support. Bravo and thanks!

I'm a previous HTC Hero owner and found that to be pretty easy to root and flash many different custom ROMs. I've recently upgraded to an Epic 4G and so far quite like it (Froyo 2.2.1 ECO5). I'm about to jump into rooting my Epic using Procedure 1 Untouched but would like to clarify a couple of things:

1) Does Procedure 1 just root the phone (i.e. doesn't flash an ECO5 ROM effectively replacing how the phone is currently set up)? If so, excellent! I've spent the last week playing around with my Epic, have it pretty much set up how I like with all my apps, corporate contacts, even right down to the live wallpaper...don't really want to start over if I don't have to. I think I'll fly with that for a while until a custom ROM really catches my eye (Syndicate ROM has my attention :) ).

2) Is there a method by which my current, stock setup (unrooted) can be backed up so that it can be easily/quickly reflashed just in case I need Sprint support? I'd don't anticipate having to take my phone in but you never know  I realize an Odin will take me back to unrooted stock...and also take it to an "out of the box" state.

Again, thanks for an excellent place to lurk. Your info is much appreciated!

Rooting using procedure #1 will leave you setup as is. No changes will be made other than providing root access with CWM 2.5.1.0 installed.

There is Odin which you seem to be aware of and until recently that was the only way. The following link is something new and is intended for users that loose USB capabilities due to a faulty USB port and can't use Odin but its another method that can be used. Link is below if you would like to check it out. Of course before performing either method here just install Titanium Backup or Mybackup Root and do your backups first, then its saved on your sdcard for later use.
ReRFS Format Stock ROM EC05 xda - developers.
Again, thanks for an excellent place to lurk. Your info is much appreciated!
No problem, hope you found what your looking for ;)

My Epic is now rooted and I'm ready to play ;)

Went flawless, everything is (for now, heh) the way it was. Again, excellent procedure/tut. Thanks Paul and Ragnarokx!

Ok, so I'm trying to convert to ext4 and flash syndicate on my epic. I'm pretty sure the drivers installed correctly, but every time I try to do the run.bat file, it says my phone isn't connected. I'm using the USB cable I used to do Procedure 1(which worked flawlessly), plus I've tried most of the USB ports on my computer. Both my computer and phone have been restarted in almost every combination I can think of, but to no avail.

I'm really excited to see what this phone can do, but I feel like I want to throw something out the window because I keep getting the error "Phone is not connected". Can someone please help?

P.S. I'm using a rooted EC05

update: I tried reinstalling the drivers and it's taking forever to install the SAMSUNG Android USB Modem, would that be a problem?

Sometimes installing the drivers can take forever.. The initial install isn't bad, but once you plug in your device with debugging on then the composite drivers etc, finish installing which can take a while... Ive had it hang on one driver for 5 minutes or better then all the sudden it continues onward..

thanks, I'm coming up on about half an hour waiting for this driver to install now. is there any way to check on it's progress while I wait?

I don't think you see the "SAMSUNG Android USB Modem" for your phone to connect to your computer to root.

hmm, that's interesting. that's the driver that it keeps getting stuck on. i think there is at least one other driver that has to install after the USB modem. it flashes up for a brief second if i accidentally unplug the cord

I would give it a try again on the root.. Make sure your Debugging is on. Also try a fresh reboot of the device/computer. Make sure you have any Antivirus turned off also because it will mostlikely recognized the "rageinthecage" exploit and stop the install.

I am currently running EC05 OTA. What must I do to achieve root?
See procedure #1 in this thread, OP. That is for basic root with ClockWorkMod installed. Good for removing bloatware, using wireless tethering, backup programs..

See procedure #2 in this thread if you want to run custom ROMs. (You can skip over procedure #1 if this is your choice)

adding bluetooth voice capability

I'm running a rooted Epic that's on Froyo.EB13 and an EXT file system. I'm basically happy with my functionality except that voice commands don't work with bluetooth. What is the easiest way to fix it? I need full bluetooth capability before I get another $130 ticket for simply touching my phone while driving. Using the speaker phone isn't enough in this state.

Bluetooth is fixed in EC05 with EXT4. Upgrade to fix.

Thanks, what is the best way to upgrade from where I'm at now? I already have root access, EXT and clockwork installed, so should I still use method 2 at the beginning of this thread, or is there some simpler way to fix the bluetooth issue without disturbing all of my data?

Thank you Paul. I assume that I'll need to back up whatever I can first since the process is probably destructive. Do people prefer titanium or clockwork in this situation?

One more question please. Once I'm done with this, and just to confirm, I'll still have root access and EXT with EC05 running on it, right? Will I then be able to flash a different ROM and keep bluetooth functionality? I may want to try Bonsai or ACE.
