[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EC05 w/Optional EXT4

ROMS

First thank you for reading my post and any help you give.

I have rooted my phone and installed EXT4 file system. I'm currently running SyndicateROM Frozen. So my question is now that I'm rooted and installed EXT4 file system and let's say I want to change to ACE do i just install the ACE.zip file on SD card and then boot into Clockwork and then clear cache and install zip file?

What is the Best ROM and most stable?

Also so I'm little confused with themes also but I will keep reading about this.

Thanks
cjlosh

Ok, I put ACE 1.7 rom on my sdcard and it failed twice following steps 7 and 8 is this normal? Now what should I do?

Is it failing when you install it at the "modem" section of the script?

If so I will need to upload a fixed version that removes the modem update of the script.. Its trying to push the update to the EB13 modem after you already have the EC05 modem which is causing the error.

Yes that is where it is failing. I'm currently running EXT4 file system with SyndicateROM Frozen (up to date).

Thanks

Going from one click root (EC05) to EXT4 so I can run a ROM....

I have already upgraded my phone to EC05 with the following procedure.

NO DATA LOSS VERSION:

Thats right, you can flash this with Odin and you will not loose your data on your device! So if your already on Froyo EB13/DK28 or Eclair 2.1 you can use this file with Odin and retain your Data.

1) Download Odin | mirror Note ** The mirror package comes with ".pit" file, this is NOT NEEDED FOR THIS PROCEDURE..
2) Download and Install Windows Drivers 32bit | 64 bit
3) Download the EC05x_DXC.tar.rar
4) Extract the "EC05x DXC.tar.rar" file to a folder on your hard drive to get the neccessary "EC05x_DXC.tar.md5" file located inside.
5) Shut down your device
6) Boot into download mode (Hold number 1 on physical keyboard and press power)
7) Start Odin
8) Plug in device via USB cable to computer, (if it's done right you should see a yellow Com device light up in one of the rectangular boxes)
9) Place the "EC05x_DXC.tar.md5" in the PDA slot on Odin
10) Check Auto Reboot ONLY
12) Click start and this should only take about 2-3 minutes to complete.
13) Wait for the green light in the Com device/rectangular box and the "Pass" to show.

When completed it should reboot into Froyo EC05 and you will have your previous Data still intact.

NOTE: For those interested in converting from this to EXT4/CWM 3.0.0.6 please see the following thread. Go to Procedure #2 and start at Step #2

[Root] Samsung Epic 4G Official Froyo EC05 w/Optional EXT4 *New*

So this is the next thing that I would need to do, right?

Procedure 2 - gives root access and converts your RFS filesystem to EXT4

0. Steps 1-8 are for users already on Froyo EC05. If this is you, proceed to Step 1 now.

If you are on Eclair or a leaked version of Froyo, go to this thread: How to Update to Froyo EC05. Once you've updated to EC05, you can complete Steps 1-8 to get EXT4.

If you are on the official Froyo EB13 and already have EXT4, simply flash the EC05 EXT4 ROM of your choice in ClockworkMod3 and then flash the EC05 modem using Odin. If you are on Froyo EB13 but do not already have EXT4, you can either obtain EXT4 on EB13 first and then flash an EC05 EXT4 ROM in ClockworkMod3, or you can update to EC05 and then follow Steps 1-8, the choice is yours.

1. Download and install the appropriate drivers for your Windows system:
32-bit drivers
64-bit drivers

Plug your Epic into your computer via USB and let Windows recognize your phone/configure the drivers. After Windows is done with the drivers, unplug your Epic.

2. Download an EC05 ROM that supports EXT4 (e.g. Bonzai 4.0, Syndicate 1.1, etc.) and place it on the root (not in a folder) of your SD card.

3. Go to this thread and download "OneClickRootCWM3-EB13.zip" (filename is correct, this zip works for EB13 and EC05) onto your computer, then extract it to a folder on your Windows desktop.

4. On your phone, push MENU, then select Applications > Development, then enable USB debugging and connect your phone to your computer via USB.

5. Now double click "run.bat" in the folder from Step 2.

The type of USB cord and the specific USB computer port can make or break the success of this installation. If you are getting errors in the command prompt during this step, trying swapping USB cables and/or switching USB ports (even the USB cord that came with the phone can cause problems!).

If the command prompt asks you to restart adb, you need to go into Windows Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del on your keyboard) and end adb in the process tab, then go into the folder from Step 2 and double-click on the "adb" file to restart adb.

If the command prompt says "device not connected", disconnect the phone and reboot it, turn debugging mode back on, reconnect the phone via USB, and rerun the "run.bat" file again. If you're still getting "device not connected", try repeating these steps one at a time or in a different order, for example just kill adb and rerun "run.bat" or only reboot the phone and then rerun "run.bat".

Antivirus programs can also cause problems. If you still can't get the run.bat file to work, try disabling your antivirus software.

If all goes well your command prompt should look something like this:

5325466439_a51dab0675_z.jpg

6. Turn off your phone, and then hold these buttons: volume down+camera+power, until you see the Clockwork screen that has orange text. Clockwork v3.0.0.6 will now automatically convert your filesystem from RFS to EXT4. This may take a while. Once Clockwork is finished DO NOT reboot until after completing Step 8. Now proceed to Step 7 below.

7. In the main screen of Clockwork, go to Wipe data/factory reset>Yes and repeat for a total of 3 times. Do the same for Wipe cache partition>Yes, as well as Advanced>Wipe Dalvik Cache>Yes.

8. Now before you reboot, you need to flash the ROM from Step 2. Go to: install zip from sdcard>choose zip from sdcard>(navigate to the ROM .zip file on your SD card)>(select it using the camera button)>yes. The ROM will now be flashed. Once the flashing is complete, you can now reboot and enjoy your new EXT4 filesystem :D Note: if you have problems booting up, you may need to repeat this step and flash your ROM a second time.

Optional: you can confirm you have successfully converted to EXT4 by using the command
Code:
adb shell mount
or
Code:
adb shell df

Your command prompt will return something like this:

Notice it mentions "ext4", not "rfs".

Important Notes
You must boot into Clockwork v3.0.0.6 by turning off your phone and holding volume down+camera+power buttons. If you boot into Clockwork using a program like ROM Manager or Quickboot, you will get errors.

A quick way to manually boot into Clockwork is to press volume up+camera+power buttons to reset your phone, then immediately hold volume down+camera+power buttons until you see the recovery screen with orange text.

Also, as long as you have EXT4 in place you can only flash ROMs and kernels with EXT4 support. To flash a ROM or kernel without EXT4 support, you must use Odin to return to stock.

Any flashable zips you want to install must by compatible with the new Clockwork v3.0.0.6. This will be explicitly indicated, or there will be a note saying the zip is using the new Edify script (as opposed to the old Amend script).

If this is the correct procedure, then I am ready to do it with only a few questions. 1) will this wipe my phone?, 2) to unroot/go back to stock EC05 I have to use Odin and lose everything, correct? 3)Assuming that this wipes my phone, will I just need to reinstall all of my missing apps manually and then try and recover the data via Titanium Backup?

Correct

If this is the correct procedure, then I am ready to do it with only a few questions. 1) will this wipe my phone?
Yes because you will be installing a custom ROM when finished with the EXT4 conversion.
2) to unroot/go back to stock EC05 I have to use Odin and lose everything, correct?
Yes using Odin to return to stock will unroot and you will loose everything and be completely factory stock OS again.
3)Assuming that this wipes my phone, will I just need to reinstall all of my missing apps manually and then try and recover the data via Titanium Backup?
Yes if you backup with Titanium or Mybackup Root before doing the EXT4 conversion you can restore with either one. We normally just recommend you re download your apps manually and then restore Data only for best results.

Okay, what about Apps that I have purchased from the Market or songs that I have purchased from Amazon mp3?

Ok, I have questions because I just need to know. I'm current running SRF 1.1.0Twilight Zone 1.1.0 /EXT4 and was wondering how to go to Official Froyo EC05 w/EXT4. Is it has easy Steps 7 and 8.

Thanks

You return to the Market and hit your Menu button and select MY APPS and you can redownload your apps you purchased.

Not familiar with Amazon but I'm sure you can re download anything you have purchased.

Well basically by running SFR 1.1.0 your running EC05. I take it you must have been on EB13/EXT4 before you flashed SFR?

You could follow the link below and select the Odin "tar" package that is prerooted/CWM 3.0.0.6/EXT4 (Second package). That will put you on official EC05 and have everything already done for you. Note, if you do choose this route your phone will be "wiped" so make your backups in CWM, Titanium or Mybackup Root before doing so.
Stock Pre-Rooted Deodexed Zipaligned Png Optimized EC05 Tar 4/7/2011 Fixed Both Tars

So can you run stock EC05 or does it have to be ACE or SFR 1.1.0.

Sorry for so many questions. one more??

I can't seem to get the youtube app to work any ideas but it will work inside Browser.

Thanks

The link I provided for the Odin tar package, that is a slightly modified version of stock EC05. That is about the closest your going to get to a 100% stock EXT4 capable version of EC05. Any of the bloatware that was removed from the ROM he has provided a link in that thread to a another application that will restore any removed bloatware.

YouTube, I haven't tried to it be honest.

Edit: Just checked it out on SFR 1.1.0 and it seems to be working fine.

I am going to try the Syndicate ROM. Do I just put entire 128MB zipped file on my SD card? Should I extract it?

Take the file exactly as you downloaded it and place it on your sdcard. DO NOT EXTRACT IT.

i was on stock ROM EC05. I rooted and phone started behaving abnormally. and it also bricked. i could not do anything. had to unroot it by flashing stock ROM again

Stuck in CRM... HELP

Im attempting to flash Bonsai4.

I get into CWM and i load update.zip text goes orange and i do what i was taught which is to 1st wipe data/factory reset (this is after a backup initially), then i wipe cashe partition, (it gives 4 messages saying E:Can't open /cache/recovery/log [twice] then E:Cant open /cache/recovery/last_log [twice]) then when i go to "install zip from sdcard" -> "chose zip from sdcard" -> Bonsai4All_Leafless_v4.0.1.zip it begins and it looks like this :

-- Installing: /sdcard/Bonsai4All_Leafless_v4.0.1.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
assert failed: getprop("ro.product.device") == "SPH-D700" || getprop(ro.build.product") == "SPH-D700"
E:Error in /sdcard/Bonsai4All_Leafless_v4.0.1.zip
(Status 7)
Installation aborted.

then it brings me to the 4 options of "apply /sdcard/update.zip" , "chose zip from sdcard" .... and at the top it says to "apply update from .zip file on SD card" so when i attempt to do so and select yes it loads some lines i cant read fast enough then it brings me back to "reboot system now" ... and at the bottom it still says

ClockworkMod Recovery v3.0.2.4
E:Cant open /cache/recovery/log
E:Cant open /cache/recovery/log
E:Cant open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:Cant open /cache/recovery/last_log

...

getting anoyed with this...

and im somewhat new to rooting, ive done a lot of research but not too much into the actual doing

thanks guys n' gals!
