Rooting for Eclair and leaked Froyo DK28

What to do next: crack open a cold one and celebrate lol.

But seriously - next stop is ClockworkMod Recovery. Before you make any other root-related modifications to your phone, you need to install Clockwork and make a backup of your system in case you mess anything up (there's a how-to thread around here somewhere). But that is a story for another day. I'm calling it a night. Glad you finally got it working! :D

Where exactly is this "How-To" thread at?

I installed clockwork rom manager and flashed recovery. Then I attempt to reboot into recovery and I get this error.

I have the professional version of clockwork rom manager.

I think the problem is actually I don't have root according to Titanium backup. Just thought I did.

I get to the point where it says, push any key to reboot the phone ...

I push a key and the phone reboots but Titanium Backup says it is not rooted.

Hmm there is something is suggest which i think is very important.

If they just want to root they should do that, but if they want to use a new rom and kernel this should use http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-roms-hacks/34603-clockworkmod-recovery-instructions.html

Because it roots ur phone and it gets clockworkmod. In essence you will do 2 things at once. Also put something on how they can check if they are rooted. For example, go to command prompt and run adb shell, type su, and if you get # that means ur rooted

Persian - we already said something about that. he said he was going to make a new thread for that. this one is strictly rooting - as it should be.
otherwise theres too much clutter from discussion getting off track etc

what should I do from this point?

i think you might have root if it just reboots. because it should say "daemon started successfully."
and then has a bunch of command lines, and then press any key to reboot phone and continue.
you said you think you already had root, it should be somewhat obvious.
when you opened up titanium did a popup ask you for root permission?

download wireless tether from the market, try and start it up, if something pops up asking for root permission your in. (keep in mind this wireless tether wont work, you need to find the apk file somewhere online look for pre-11)

i think you may have accidentally clicked off "remember"
let me know if this isi the problem and ill let you know how to fix it its really simple.

can i ask what you used to indicate that you had root?

i guess just try following the directions again;
you have the android sdk, the one click root folder?

thats really all you need.
and for clockwork follow the link that rag gave you a few posts up. installing rom manager and then flashing clockwork recovery like that will not get you to recovery on the epic

What will the program say after a successful root? Probably a good screen shot to have in the ultimate how to guide

I haven't used Titanium Backup in a while, but from what I can recall when you first open it there are a few lines of text. One line is something like:
"Root access? Yes" or "Root access? No"
It should be pretty self explanatory. Try opening Titanium again and looking for that screen.
Remember this is a group effort - by all means if you upload a screen shot of Titanium that tells you if you're rooted I'll add it to the guide :)

what screen are you talking about?

what it says in the command prompt or on your phone?

idk what it says in the command prompt. but on your phone its very self explanatory as rag said.
it says "super user is asking for root permission"
(checkbox: if checked will always allow root. it says "always")
"allow" "deny"

you should make sure the checkbox is checked and clock allow

Okay, things are getting a bit confusing. Screenshot I was referring to is of a successful command prompt message after rooting.

I verified my root in the adb shell by going typing
c:/ adb shell
$ SU
#

I was told that means I have root.

Where is this checkbox supposed to be at?

Because Titanium is still telling "Sorry, I could not acquire root privileges. This application will *not* work! Please verify that your ROM is rooted and includes BusyBox, and try again.

Nevermind, Busybox was not installed. Downloaded it and installed and it told me my phone was rooted. So now I need to follow rag's link to Clockwork Recovery?

Now Titanium says I am rooted. Okay, on to the next problem. For the record, my wife will be getting an Epic in two weeks and I will have her film me rooting hers and we will try to duplicate some of the problems, I experienced. I think a bulk of the problems come from trying to run the program outside of CMD. Everything went so much smoother from the CMD line.

Yup, installing Clockwork and making a system backup is the first thing you should do after rooting.

After I followed the instructions successfully to flash the kernel in that link you gave me and have busybox installed, now stupid Rom Manager is going on that I am not rooted and my Super User access is non existent. Man, lol, I swear if I ever get through this, I am going to make a detailed NEWB guide with pictures, the information is just too scattered everywhere. Thanks for all your patiences and help Rag and Shaun

Okay, so is there a how to that I am missing that shows us how to manually boot into recovery and or install apk's on our own? Because I see a superuser.apk in my tools folder on my computer's hard drive, but have no idea how to install that on my device.

Okay, nevermind everything is great for the moment! I tell you what, as soon as my wife's upgrade is ready next week, I am gonna try and put all the data a person should need in one thread with pictures and maybe videos too! My phone is being backed up by clockwork atm. Whenever I booted into recovery before, nobody ever told me I needed to apply the update there. Once I did that it brought me into clockwork recovery.

Does the phone need to be connected to the pc when doing recovery and backing up etc? Mine was, was just curious if it mattered.
