ok so im coming from the blackberry world and am trying to understand all this technical stuff for my TB...this may be a dumb question but im pretty confused -

after i root my phone do i HAVE TO load a custom ROM or will i be able to use the stock one at that time after it is initially rooted?

also, if i am not happy with these custom roms how do i go back to the stock rom? (im guessing thats where flashing clockworkmod recovery comes into play before flashing a new rom)

thanks for your help guys, i know its frustrating trying to teach this to everyone

rooting is only to gain admin rights so after you do it everything should be identical minus you are now an admin. you can always go back to whatever rom you want whenever you want.

dont worry im new too but slowly learning!

yeah, you can stay on the standard rom with root as long as you want. If you decide to go the custom rom route, cwm gives you the ability to make a backup of your current rom and restore it if you don't like the new one.

You are allowed to be on your stock ROM and be rooted. Thats what I have right now. Rooting just gives you special permissions so that you can access and change files that you weren't supposed to. This allows for the removal of those terrible stock apps and free wifi tethering and such.

Make sure you have ClockworkMod Recovery (or another comparable recovery) before doing any ROM changes. It will save you! I always make a nandroid backup with ClockworkMod Recovery before flashing a new ROM. That way, if you dont like the new one or there is a problem, you just restore your previous ROM, and all of your settings and previous data will be restored with it.

No. You do not HAVE to load a custom ROM. The one you are running is just fine.

Yes. Provided you did a Nandroid backup before you flashed, you will be able to recover (or re-flash) the stock ROM and all the settings and apps and data will be exactly how it was when you backed up.

Pro tip: Make sure you do a full Nandroid backup before you flash anything and NEVER EVER EVER delete it. It just may save your bacon one day.

Extra Pro tip: ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS wipe everything before installing a new ROM. (after you save your current setup) If you just flash over the old one, some scripts that may not be compatible will get left behind and you could potentially end up in force close hell.

awesome...great help guys i clearly understand it all now...much appreciated!!

just take your time and do your homework when it comes to modding your Tbolt. its very difficult to fully brick any android device. some of the processes can be long but its all recoverable. having the capability to customize whatever you want is very niiice;)
