How much work would it be to get rid of just the sense lock screen? And maybe NASCAR?

Delete /system/app/HtcLockScreen.apk and it will be gone. Take note that unless you also replace the WorldClock with the Google desk clock that you will be unable to turn off an alarm if it goes off while your phone is locked without rebooting.

This will not remove the HTC unlock slider when getting a call though. There is currently no way to override that.

You can delete NASCAR with Titanium Backup

Now I found I can get to the lock screen apk through astro file manager, do I still need to be rooted?

Rem i dont want to sway you into rooting but...

Once you root, flash a different rom and do smart under/overclocking youre battery will be rediclously good, then remove the bloatware, get free tethering, and have the ability to change ANYTHING... i dont think being stock unrooted will be appealing at all to you.

If youre worried about bricking/damaging your phone, take a look at these forums for brick/damaged threads (theres none LOL), and take into consideration how many people root and how little problems there is that cant be solved personally or with the help of the forum. AND unrooting is SUPER easy.

Like i said, im not trying to sway you.... hehe

Just root... especially if you don't want bloatware... its a 12step process followed by one click with simpleroot... download a few files, do some typing and bam... rooted.
