Rooting with official 2.1 installed

Hello everyone,

I am a new Hero owner and definitely want to root my phone. Just one question:

I own a Mac and my phone came with 2.1 installed, is http://forum.androidcentral.com/htc...-how-root-your-sprint-htc-hero-using-mac.html still relevant? Meaning is this the set of instructions I use so as to root without effin' up anything?

Thank you in advance for your help.

No that's to root 1.5but read threw it while I get the link for rooting 2.1. It will give you a enough idea tho. Be back in min with link.

Follow the links. You will have to change the commands a little for MAC but it should tell you how to. I'm not the MAC guy but post if you have problems and sure all of us will try an help.

so I was following the mac walkthrough but I want to root it to do wireless tether. and also update to the 2.1. should i follow this rooting even though its for windows. is there anything different for mac users?

Use rufflez guide(root1.5) to get everything set up but you will have to follow the guide to root 2.1 and edit the commands for mac.

Just three more questions as a result of my financial instability and paranoia:

1. Which step in the process is the point of no return? (Can't afford another phone)

2. In lieu of the "install HTC Sync" step (3 I think) for windows, what to do for Mac?

3. If Sprint releases 2.2 before a custom root is released, will I be able to download it?

Thanks again.

I will try to answer your questions, but I am not sure on everything.

1. Decide if you want to root before you start. If you are going to root follow all the steps. But I don't thick that there is a point of no return unless something gets really messed up and your phone is completely bricked (hard to do if you stick to CDMA Sprint stuff).
2. I'm not sure what to do about HTC sync. But nothing up to that point affects your phone.
3. A custom 2.2 ROM will be out this week most likely. It will probably be 6 months if
ever before HTC releases and official update.
