S-OFF Achieved for Permanent Root (AlphaRev Team)

So sweet. The news I have been waiting for! I actually went back to my OG Dinc so I could rock CM7

Bring it on boys!

If I wanted to stay on the stock rom and instead of removing the bloatware.

I would root and freeze all the bloatware with Titanium Backup Pro and not flash a custom rom.

Really dont need to unroot once you freeze bloatware, even if you wish to stay on stock rom.

Rooting alone basically just allows you to have admin. previlages on your phone, like having administrative permissions on your computer

If you root you can delete the bloatware completely ;-)

I know :) just saying there is an option other then removing.
If I was to opt to remove bloatware I would find and copy the .apk to my sd card , with root exployer> system>apps, before I deleted it tho.

i'm sorry i'm kinda a noob at this. is there somewhere i can read about using clockwork to back up my stuff? and how to flash? and basically everything root and pre-root 101? i've found some other stuff on other forums for other phones is that applicable to dinc2?.

Head over to the Droid Incredible rooting, ROMs and hacks forums and read some of the guides there, I would assume that the rooting and flashing proceadures for the Dinc2 would be pretty similar, if not exactly the same. :)

noob, still using a BB, but; after you root do you have to install a custom ROM? or can you just access it and tweak and delete stuff? or is that basically what a custom ROM is, someone just did the tweaking already for you? Just to be more clear about what a ROM is... are Sense, and MotoBlur technically ROMs that HTC/motorolla pre-install?

does this allow for the ability to tether, use skype/google video, watch netflix etc?

can you install a newer OS version (like Gingerbread) once you root even if its not "officially" available for your device? (with BB's there were always leaks from other carriers that you could install unofficially)

how does Verizon feel about all this?

sorry for all the questions, but this seems like something i would absolutely need to do once i get a DInc2.

A custom ROM is basically a version of Android that the ROM chef has customized to they're own liking, or in the case of Cyanogenmod, taken stock Vanilla Android and added a ton of customization options to it. No, you don't have to install a custom ROM after rooting, a lot of people root simply to remove carrier bloatware (and I hear there is a lot of it on the Dinc2). As for installing Gingerbread when it isn't officially available, My phone (the original Droid Incredible) has yet to see an official Gingerbread update but thanks to Cyanogenmod I'm running Android 2.3.4 and loving it.

As for Sense and Motobulr, they aren't ROM's, rather they are custom UI's that the phone manufacturer (HTC and Motorola respectively) put on top of Android. Sense in particular has it's fans, but the custom UI's don't do it for me, which is why I run Cyanogenmod.

And Verizon probably isn't a huge fan of they're customers rooting and running custom ROM's but they won't stop you either, though rooting will void your warranty.

And don't worry about asking lots of questions, that's how you learn. :D

hey thanks! and I think i've read there is a way to restore your phone, or unRoot it if i needed to return it during the warranty phase. right?

so a customRom doesn't necessarily change the look of the UI, it just changes functionality? could I, if I learned how, create a custom UI? (I made a bunch of themes for my BB and started to get the hang of editing code and stuff so if given the time I feel like i could be a decent developer. my forte is graphics tho)

Usually if you can root then you can unroot as well. I was able to successfully unroot and reroot my OG Dinc, and I'm sure there will be a way to unroot the Dinc2 and return it to stock should you need to bring it in for warranty.

And no, a custom ROM doesn't necessarily change the look of the UI. The Dinc2 comes with HTC Sense, as do all HTC phones, so if you run a Sense based ROM you might notice a huge difference visually. However AOSP (Android Open Source Project) ROM's do away with the custom UI's completely and use pure 100% vanilla Android, so if you run an AOSP ROM that is when you will see the most difference in the UI.

And we Android users don't typically make out own UI's, the manufacturers do that, but we sure theme and customize them to death. There are a ton of Cyanogenmod themes out there, and ROM chefs have even found ways to change and customize Sense.

would there be a way: for example to change the way the home screens scroll (pardon the ignorance on android lingo)

instead of them bouncing from screen 1, 2 etc as you scroll to left and right, make it like one large screen that scrolls smoothly as if you were zoomed into a big tablet home screen. does that even make sense?

I dont even know why you'd want to do that but its just something that popped into my head. feel free to ignore me. :-!

The cool thing about Android is that you can customize almost anything, including how you scroll from one screen to another. Most of the popular alternate launchers like Launcher Pro and ADW Launcher let you use different effects when scrolling from one screen to another.

And I don't think you can zoom in and have one giant home screen, but it your using an alternate launcher then you can limit the number of homescreens to three if you want to keep things nice and simple.

WOOHOO!!! I am just hoping by Friday the AlphaRev team has the beta released so I can get testing the rom I have been dinc'ing with over the weekend.

My phone is delivered the same day this news come out. Awesome. I've used Linux for years now and android was one of the main selling point for me when deciding on this phone. I can't wait to see what the future holds for Inc 2 dev.
