S-OFF Achieved for Permanent Root (AlphaRev Team)

So now that the root is public, anyone know how long unrevoked will take to drop in? I've never rooted before and really don't feel comfortable manually manipulating my file systems. I would prefer the unrevoked 1-click root so I don't worry about bricking my phone. Really wish the imminent GB update just unlocked the phone but I'm doubting it will sadly... Any idea how long unrevoked typically takes guys?

The S-off process is basically fully automated and will even auto install CWM. Then there's a update.zip over on XDA you can install through CWM to finish the full root. It's really a simple process and nothing to be scared of.

Yeah, the windows version doesn't work. Have to use the linux version.

I don't have linux I wonder if I can make a bootable linux flash drive and use it? I made one once before but it was fairly limited.

Download VirtualBox ( VirtualBox ) for free and install Linux (I like Linux Mint 11) as a virtual machine. You can even pass through USB devices directly to a Virtual Machine (Download the VirtualBox expansion pack).

I think I'll give that a try. If I like it well enough I may just make it the primary os on my netbook

I just did this using Ubuntu on a USB key, and it worked great. I had no issues and it took less than 5 min after I booted into Linux. Nice!

I am now going for perm root and superuser after backing up everything. Then on to CM7!!!

Then I followed all the instructions and I am now running CM7 and loving it. I might try the rooted VZW Gingerbread later if I miss sense.

Will some one PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE for the love of GOD do a step by step guid for the root. I have Ubuntu and the links to all the downloads. I cant even get the .exe Alpharevx file to run. PLEASE HELP!!!!!! All the crap ware on this DI2 is driveing me NNUTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Got it working with CM7 mod running great. Thanks anyway i guess

I dont know for certain but my understanding is the OTA update will undo your S-Off. If you load CM7 Rom then you wont even get the update on your phone as those ROM's have removed the Carrier OTA updates.

I may be wrong but that is my understanding.

Thats right....but if you put CM7 on there..why in the world would you want anything else from VZW?..lol..CM7 is workig SWEET!!!! and its only going to get better!

Yea that's what I am unsure of. Sure rooting would be great for the superuser permissions, but I'm not to crazy for installing new ROMs. So as long as I keep the stock ROM that came on my phone, I should be fine right? And just incase, can rooting be undone if need be for such things as repairing and warranty purposes? Thanks

New roms are great. The best part of a new rom or even CM7 is that it removes ALL the crap VZW put on the DI2...sooooooo much smoother and faster now.

Sounds awesome! I'm just a bit cautious of rooting because if something ever goes wrong with my phone, I'm not sure about what can be done such as unrooting to be eligible to use the warranty give by VZW for repair, replacement, etc.

Use Clockwork ( built into Alpharevx) and back up your stock rom. Then root. If you ever have to go back to stock, just flash the backup with Clockwork ( or Rom Manager is what I use)...btw...LOVE the free hotspot with CM7!

I backed up my phone right away when I used AlphaRevX but thanks for the help anyways.

Why don't you try going back into Hboot and flashing a backup, if you've made any. I haven't updated so I'm not sure what else if that doesn't do it. By the way, there are ROMs that have gingerbread. Like my ROM is 2.3.3 and I was able to get HTC Sense 3.0 on it. It depends if you want the regular updates from Verizon or if you'd rather get different ones from else where.
