S24 Ultra; So yea or nay?

I upgraded from the S22 ultra which was a great phone, but I figured I would get the new one and give it a try. It seems ok. Definitely faster then the S22 ultra and a lot easier on the battery. I don't see much of an improvement in the camera system, but there is some. I hear an update is coming to address some issues with the camera so I am waiting to see what that brings. I know this phone will get better after an update or two. All phones do. Just some people like to jump the gun and start bashing a phone just cause it's not working like they want it to at first. BE PATIENT PEOPLE. I do think after this upcoming update this will be a phone that everyone will want. And i do plan on keeping this phone for several years. So Is this phone better than the S22 Ultra. Yes, I think so, and It will only get better after an update or two.

I said I was done upgrading with the S23 Ultra as it was perfect (thinking we'd never see the flat screen) . The flat screen alone makes it a clear choice over my S23 Ultra.

No more film protectors and no more amFilm Glass or Whitestone glass with the PIA gluing on the screen protector just to lift or spiderweb.

A few days later, it's a big yea on my 24U. The fingerprint reader is definitely more responsive, I love the double tap to wake and put it to sleep, they went to a little more PIN security by requiring a 6 digit PIN to get the automatic entry to open the screen, which doesn't bother me a bit. I just added a number and it's golden.

My response above wasn't very concise.

I think if you're willing to spend the money the S24 Ultra is worth it. If you find a S23 Ultra at a significant price difference you won't be disappointed with it.

So head to head, I'd chose the 24 Ultra.
If pricing is significant enough, I'd pick the S23 Ultra.

One thing to note is this damn camera shift I didn't notice until someone pointed it out. It seems 1 to 5 is OK but 1 to 3 and 3 to 5 have a noticeable shift when the lenses change.
Hopefully the "Camera Improvements" Flossy cited include this.

It apparently affect not just the Ultra :

I've got the S24U, coming from a Pixel 7 Pro. It's my first Samsung phone since the Galaxy S4 Google Play Edition. I had the original Galaxy Note prior to that. I've had the Pixel XL and Pixel 2XL, the OnePlus 7 Pro and 9 Pro, and the Pixel 6 Pro and 7 Pro since then.

I think the S24U is a definite yes. Nearly everything about it is a huge upgrade over the Pixel 7 Pro. I miss a couple of the Pixel exclusive software features, but the Pixel has its own quirks and shortcomings. Not coming directly from a Samsung phone, I'm not as picky about the screen - I think it looks great. The S4U fingerprint reader is night and day better than the Pixels. The network reception and speed destroy the Pixels. Cameras are all pretty good on flagship phones and the ones on the S24U are plenty good enough for me. Battery life has been great. Android Auto worked perfectly the first time I hooked it up.

I had pre-ordered the OnePlus 12 as well and was comparing the OP12 and S24U for a week. The OP12 screen is really fantastic - I actually slightly preferred it over the S24U....except for the curved edges. And they are really curved. OP12 was also missing WiFi Calling on AT&T, which I need given my cell reception at home. So I chose the S24U and haven't looked back. It's a great phone. I'm still figuring out all of the settings and getting it configured/tweaked the way I like it, but it's an amazing device.

The curved screens have annoyed me since their inception. Between my Note 9 and S22U, I had a Note 20, and loved having a flat screen again. I upgraded to the S24U specifically because they went back to a flat screen.

I could have gotten the 24 Ultra but made a conscious decision to go with the 24+.

Why?

Well I know it's great to have but I NEVER used the S-Pen. Like if I put a percentage on it we're talking less than 1% during any given 24hr day.

The price.

Is ridiculous. I know you have to pay to play but $1300 is a lot of clams for a stinkin phone. The 200 MP camera, S-Pen and new anti glare coating on the display simply isn't worth the extra $300.

The design/build

Those corners on the Ultra look and are pretty sharp and it wouldn't take long before holding the phone without a case will start to hurt. Love hurts. Phones shouldn't.

The Ultra is a pretty awesome piece of technology no matter how you slice it however if you take the time to examine things closely you'll see that for many the S24 plus' improved screen resolution, basically identical battery (-100MAh) same special Samsung Edition Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 Soc and matching specs everywhere else, rounded corners and lighter but comparable strength build quality all equal a better value at $300 cheaper.

Just saying

There's other differences and some want the Spen. Some don't want the look of a iPhone. People outside the United States didn't have snap dragon gen 3 in the plus. What a better value to you isn't to others.

I did take the time to examine the differences and I will agree it was a much harder decision this year between the plus and ultra. I eventually just went with the ultra for the flat square screen and other things.

My brother got the plus and he's having disappointing battery results compared to my ultra even if the battery is basically almost same size.

Update. Just returned mine.

The camera even with the update is noticeably worse than the S23 Ultra. 5x even with high MP cannot compete with the 10x and main camera is near identical.

Simply put, it's a downgrade if you take pictures or have an S23 Ultra.

Edit: this was still the case with the new firmware from today.

I agree flat screen and anti glare are the two big ones for me.

Almost never a great upgrade from one cycle to the next unless you have the money to spend.

I really got tired of the Infinity Display which is why I skipped the 23U. It doesn't help I got a great deal on my iPhone 14PM 512GB, which of course I no longer have since I got the S24U.

I still have my OnePlus 11 5G and Xiaomi 12t.

Definitely YAY! Love the Matte Finish. Feels amazing!!!

Well sounds like the 24 isn't for you, it's not for everyone.

I don't think so at all, S24 camera has more natural colors and more details
Maybe u like more warmer tones
If u compare in whole
The upgrade is great
Battery life, display
Speakers
Speed
Cameras
Flat screen
Less reflective

Nope, it's not. I think it was/is more tailored to content creators and those that don't use zoom frequently.

You clearly didn't read what I said. I loved the phone otherwise. The cameras were the issue which I said upfront and the only thing I said.

I use zoom a lot and the S24 Ultra was hands down inferior.

Everything beyond 5x is a digital crop of a "50mp" shot. S23 Ultra, everything zoomed is from a 10x lens and cropped. Even at a lower megapixel count, a optical lens with stronger magnification will always win.

Then this phone is not for you. You do what works for you. But it sounds like you need a top line camera. Not a phone that has a camera and takes pictures.
