S4 GT-I9505 Root

Hi,
First of all apologies as I?m sure people post on here all the time asking similar things.
I?m trying to root my S4 to enable me to install the Google ROM.
I've read hundreds of threads, tried lots of different methods without success. I've got no idea what I'm doing wrong. The phone heats up, freezes and drains battery in less than 30 mins.
I purchased the S4 when it was released and it looks like it may of come from Germany as it keeps installing German apps every time I do a firmware update. But the main reason for the root is to enable me to ditch Samsungs software.
I'm currently running Android 4.3
Can someone point me to a current process to get me to my goal?
