S6 Display Is More Efficient Than S5 Display

From Gizmodo and DisplayMate:

"With each successive generation Samsung has been systematically improving the power efficiency of their OLED displays. We measured a 20 percent improvement in display power efficiency between the Galaxy S5 and the Galaxy S6, which is especially impressive given that the Galaxy S6 has almost double the number of pixels and therefore much higher processing overhead. The Galaxy S6 also has an Ultra Power Saving Mode that lowers the Screen Brightness and also sets the background to Black, both of which significantly reduce display power and can double the running time on battery. See the Display Power*section for measurements and details."

So more efficient processor. More efficient RAM. More efficient storage. Now we're seeing a 20% improvement over a 1080p display. Anyone else not so worried about the battery life on this thing? I'm not.

in Lollipop, screen battery consumption seems to be lower than in KK, so if screen typically use 30% of the battery, s6 will be 0.3*0.2=6% longer lasting than s5. The more dark color you use, less difference there will be.

The data is also fascinating in that, apparently s5 is actually brighter in most circumstances than s6... wow.. didn't expect that.

That is a long read but if you have the time, it's worth it. The 2 things that I never really thought much about that I'm most excited about is how well it's supposed to perform in both extremes: bright light and very dark rooms. Great when trying to use in the sun and great when I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back asleep and don't want to wake up the wife with my screen brightness. My S3's lowest brightness is way too bright. I always wondered why they didn't let me go any lower.

Figured you guys would appreciate this. Almost every initial hands on cited the QHD screen being overkill for the battery. The fact that they were able to put out the best display ever on a smartphone -and- make it more efficient than their 1080p panel is impressive. This whole device was very carefully designed and it shows. Efficiency is the name of the game and the S6 has it in spades.

The methodology behind their testing is partially flawed, they seem to be measuring overall device power consumption at that specific brightness instead of isolating just the display itself. Measuring the display itself would be a major hassle though as they would have to separate the display from the phone and then do the measurements. This is essentially the best they could do without taking apart the phone.

Either way, there is still a noticeable improvement in power efficiency between the S5 and S6 and I think Samsung has successfully addressed the battery life concerns on the S6.

Interesting, wish somebody would be able to test battery drawn for screen alone, if at all possible.

There was a big discussion about this whole testing process and to accurately measure the display's power consumption they would need to hook up their measuring devices directly to the display connector.

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't really matter as long as we can see that there is a noticeable improvement over previous generation devices. I'm just glad to see that there is an improvement over the S5 in terms of efficiency, brightness and colour accuracy.

Yeahs, because the S5 was already EPIC in those areas so the S6 is just that much EPIC-er.

One shortcoming that has alway bothered me is the ability to use the device out in the sunlight without turning the brightness way up thus chewing up battery or auto brightness which seem a bit dodgy in low light conditions.

I never noticed that in the multiple S5s I've had. Interesting.
