On the S6 you could assign an individual message tone to a contact. Can you do this with the S7? Thanks
Welcome to Android Central!
Yes you can.
OK I have tone assigned to the contact but it's still reverting to the default tone on my s7 edge. How do I get it to work? I have the files on the device storage and not SD card. Restarted phone and they still won't work.
Does the sound work when you play it in a music app?
Yes it does and it plays when you select it for the contact message tone. So I am not understanding why when I get a message from that person that it's not working.
Just got the S7 this past Friday and had this same issue with hangouts and other notification sounds. I found that for Gmail and Hangouts, neither were given permission to access the phone storage, but once I gave those permissions, my sounds played just fine. Make sure your contacts app has the appropriate permissions set.
I don't see a way to check the permissions on the edge in the contacts. I use the one that's built right into the phone and I want to be able designate certain tones for a few specific people. But I can't seem to figure it out.
Go to: Settings --> Device --> Applications --> Application Manager
Scroll on the list until you find the contacts app and tap it. Tap the permissions section to see and/or change them. For me, I had to make sure these apps had access to storage or the ringtones/notifications did not work correctly. I don't know why they weren't granted by default, but I suspect that the app is supposed to ask you at some point, otherwise the permission remains "off".
I don't know if this will solve your problem, but I had this same basic issue with both Gmail and Hangouts not using my custom sounds. Both apps would show the correct sound was selected and would even play the preview of the sound when selecting it. But when a message came in, I'd get the default sound. Neither were granted permission to access the phone's storage, and once I did that, both apps began using the correct notification sounds.
Thank you I will try it and let you know.
OK so I looked at the permissions and the one for storage is on. So I'm still at a loss on it.
Well, it was worth a look, I suppose. I hope you figure it out, but I'm out of ideas on this at the moment.
Scratch my last answer. Sometimes I forget which phone I am on. Had to look at the wifes S7.
On the S7 go to contacts , edit button and then ringtone. You should be able to set a custom ringtone from there.
I apologize if you have already tried with those settings.
