On my S3 that died the left soft button was the one you used for getting app settings. On the new S7 that button (left soft) is for split screen. Is there a button for settings on the S7?

If you need home screen settings, long rest any empty area on the home screen. Alternatively, you can pinch the home screen to go to settings menu. If you need the settings of a particular app, there's a "hamburger button" on top left or right and settings will be there.

I am not seeing a (hamburger) button on the apps in question. They use the left soft button to get to settings.

Most apps written for Android 4.4 or above use either three dots or three lines in a row down, top left or right to access additional settings or info. Other general app settings are in the app manager in Settings-Applications.

That's because it's a gear, and not the usual icon you are looking for. As said, dots or lines.
