S7 - Thicker and Lower MP count. Is this an issue for you?

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

ok before every one bashes me. I am stating my opinion, you are allowed to have your own as well.

OK now that we got that out of the way, I've looked at the dimensions for the S7 vs the S6 and I'm kinda disappointed, they've gone lower in pixel count (I know pixels ain't everything but the S6 camera was AMAZING. I constantly zoom on far objects to show my friends and they are always amazed) and it got thicker too (I know we're talking very small measurements here but still)

The only thing I'm envious towards is the bigger battery... anyone know of any aftermarket S6 battery's? lol

Umm, the reason it's thicker is largely because of the bigger battery. Duh. And you're right, MP aren't everything. Not even close to everything.

I mean, geez, the people on forums like this one have been saying for years we want more battery capacity, not thinner phones. Samsung finally gives us that, and people start whining because it's a millimeter thicker.

Nothing wrong with a phone that's 1mm thicker than the S6.

I find them more comfortable for some reason.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

It is a risky move for samsung but hopefully results will speak for themselves.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

The camera went a step further and not backwards. Pixels does not mean everything. The LENS itself is what counts. They put a better lens in the camera and cut down the pixel to have a better aperture. That outweighs what the s6 had by a long shot. Any professional photographer will tell you this.

Not just the lens, it's the size of the pixels which Samsung also increased. I've been saying for years that the number of MP don't matter if the sensor size stays the same, smaller pixels can't take in light as well as larger pixels.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

I have the GS6 Edge, and I really thought keeping it for 2 years. I figured the GS7 was going to be just a little better, not enough for me to get it.
Boy, was I wrong!
Now, I can't decide if the larger Edge or regular GS7.

The larger battery capacity and smaller camera hump (although this really doesn't bother me because I normally use a case) are great improvements. Water resistant is the icing on the cake!

Couple those larger pixels plus the wider aperture PLUS OIS and Samsung's camera software, looks like the S7 is set to be another great smartphone camera.

95% more light on the new double pixels tech. The s7 camera is such a giant leap forward it is insane

S7 kills the s6 in every way

Thinner isn't always better. See the new SI Swimsuit edition for examples of this.

And I'm a fan of the thicker phone (easier to hold, bigger battery) and the new camera. Sounds like they improved everything with the camera except for the pixel count, which doesn't mean squat. Do you think the 21 MP camera in the Moto X is better than the 16 MP in the S6? Lots of other things come into play.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

If you are complaining about 12 MP vs. 16 MP please direct me as to which billboard, movie poster, and/or bus stop advertisement you are photographing for? 12 MP is still A LOT more than you need for dynamic range, crop-zoom, and printable size. Overkill for Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

This is a step forward from the S6 camera in specs alone. I would much rather have a clean (low ISO) night shot (doable with 12 MP), than some muddy oil-painting that sacrifices detail, for MP count.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

Are we really losing megapixels? The S7 shoots at a native 4:3 ratio. Previous Samsung phones shot at 16:9 with 16 MP. If you ever wanted to shoot standard 4:3 photos, it was at 12 MP.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

The phone is thicker because it requires a heatpipe. Rather than leave some empty space, they put in a bigger battery.

Samsung doesn't make camera sensors. They bought the best available and used it. Maybe next year the best will be 24MP. This year it's 12MP@4:3

Are you sure about that? :) :) :)

What about that controversy when the S6 came out and some people got S6s with Sony camera sensors and some got S6s with Samsung ISOCELL camera sensors?

[mod edit] I rather have my phone be a millimetre thicker and last a lot longer. My S6 Edge Plus was almost too thin to use comfortably without a case.

And megapixels aren't everything. This new camera is going to take much better quality photos especially in low light.

Are the camera specs the same with the S7 and S7 Edge? I assumed they were but the reason I'm asking is because of some sample photos that differentiate between the S7 and the Edge.
Thanks

That's a good question. I'd also like to know.

The lens determines the max aperture not the sensor or pixels. The smaller pixel count allows for larger pixels in a given sensor size. The sensor size in cell phones is absolutely tiny compared to cameras of similar pixel counts. This is market driven as it impresses the uninformed. Cudos to Samsung for doing the right thing.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

Phones have gotten so thin they are uncomfortable and precarious to hold without a thick rubber case. I'd rather have a thicker phone with a large battery and fantastic camera.

Also megapixels is just feature fatigue. 12 megapixels is 4200 x 2800. At 170 dpi, that's 24" x 16". Do you print a lot of photos at that size?
