S7 - Thicker and Lower MP count. Is this an issue for you?

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

I can't wait to start seeing photo samples from AC users!

95% more light on the new double pixels tech. The s7 camera is such a giant leap forward it is insane

S7 kills the s6 in every way

Holy crap, that's impressive as heck.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

I think the thickness isn't so bad, as this allows for a bigger battery, which is useful because of the bigger screen. And I'm sure everyone knows Megapixels aren't everything. Let's wait to see what the photo comparisons looks like before we jump to conclusions.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

I have the GS6 Edge, and I really thought keeping it for 2 years. I figured the GS7 was going to be just a little better, not enough for me to get it.
Boy, was I wrong!
Now, I can't decide if the larger Edge or regular GS7.

The larger battery capacity and smaller camera hump (although this really doesn't bother me because I normally use a case) are great improvements. Water resistant is the icing on the cake!

Personally if you like the edge. Go for it for the bigger screen.

I have to wait till Oct before I can get a new phone, so the Note 6 will likely be my next phone.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

I've looked at the dimensions for the S7 vs the S6 and I'm kinda disappointed, they've gone lower in pixel count (I know pixels ain't everything but the S6 camera was AMAZING. I constantly zoom on far objects to show my friends and they are always amazed) and it got thicker too (I know we're talking very small measurements here but still).

Well, the S7 may have a fewer pixel count, but it's actually better than the S6. It allows more light into the sensor thanks to larger pixels and a wider aperture. And yes, while the raw resolution is lower, you won't really notice it on a phone display and even a regular display unless you squint or zoom it a whole lot, and even then, the difference isn't actually that large.

And it's only 1mm thicker. It's negligible in the real-world. My daily driver is 9.8mm thick by comparison, and I never found it really thick. Plus, they stuffed in a way bigger battery and a heatpipe as well, which I find it a much-needed trade-off, because I really dislike the race for thinner devices because I find it very pointless.

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

The improvements are amazing on the new S7 series!. One feature that needed improvement was the camera hump, and that is critical due to the fact that you can damaged your lens without knowing how you did it!... (note5)...I am very excited about this new 7 series, and I will try the Edge, mainly due to the size factor. After try the LG V10, I will stay with Samsung phones! Sooooo much better!... No Apple for me! Tooooo BORING!!!!!

Re: Thicker and Lower MP count.... really?

1mm thicker along with curved back has meant improved battery capacity, getting rid of the camera hump, a smaller phone in dimensions that actually matter, and better grip because of it. The only thing they've lost is bragging rights since they're not teh thinnest! anymore. To me it sounds like it's very much worth it.

It actually is very well worth it. The camera hump isn't actually totally eliminated, but it's way smaller now.

I applaud Samsung for doing this. Hope others get the message.

Camera 16x9 vs 4x3 and MP count..

I currently have an LG phone and was really excited to wake up to the LG G5 launch, however, after viewing both launches, I can't help but gravitate towards the S7. That being said, I don't mind the camera dropping to 12 MP but I just found out that is only for letter box 4x3 pictures. When taking 16x9 it drops to 9 MP. Is this enough to still get nice pictures that you can view on a bigger screen, such as a home computer or television? I understand the bigger and dual pixel argument presented in the launch event regarding low light and auto focus and I am excited about those features, however, I would like to hear people's opinions on only 9 MP for the 16x9 aspect ratio. Is this going to flop like the HTC camera did back a few years ago?

Thank you for your input, not trying to hate on the phone, so please, no bashing..

Re: Camera 16x9 vs 4x3 and MP count..

I constantly put all my phone pictures into iPhoto/photo app for my MacBook and hook it up to my TV for our viewing pleasure. After buying my S6 the screen as always been filled and we love it. Whenever I look at older pics taken with older phones in 4:3 it kinda bothers me that it's not full screen (only the videos are)

So, I said it after I got my 2nd S6 (first one was defective) I said this phone will be with me until it dies (I can keep a phone for 2 or 3 years no problem)

I use my IR blaster EVERY SINGLE DAY. Anyone with kids that take the batteries out for there toys or just lose the remotes in general know what I'm talking about and that's enough reason for me not to get the S7.

my next phone will be the HTC M9 concept if they ever make it or Galaxy S9

9MP is still plenty. In my opinion, anything 8MP or above is perfectly fine for smartphone cameras where the most common usage is going to be viewing pictures on a laptop, sharing to Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat etc.

Throughout my time having 8MP camera phones I never once thought 'I wish I had more resolution in these images' but rather 'I wish the image wasn't so noisy, dark and blurry in low light environments'.

Thanks Cakefish, I suspect you are right, was just curious.
My current Sony Z5 Compact defaults to 8MP and I'm perfectly happy with that. I could choose the 23MP mode but I actually prefer 8MP mode due to the down sampling wizardry that Sony employs from the full sensor resolution, which improves image quality slightly compared to raw 23MP photos. Just goes to show that megapixels really don't mean all that much past a certain point (again I think that magic number is around 8MP).

I don't like the thought of the S7 getting thicker. However I could deal with it (still suck though). As far as going from 16 to 12 MP, I don't mind. I have the Canon 70D DSLR that has the dual pixel technology and if the S7 is anything like it, it will be awesome. Also, I have taken sharp pix with a 3 megapixel camera that rivals the quality of a 16 megapixel camera. You just have to know shooting techniques. Megapixels matter if you are planning on printing the pix. The larger the megapixel count, the larger pix you can print without all the pixelation.

The S6 took in 60% more light than the S5 so the jump in low light performance between S7 and S6 is actually greater than S6 was from S5.

The S7 camera is practically a night vision device. And super fast focus. Can't wait

I would prefer a thicker phone any day if it means a bigger battery
