S8+ too long, looks awkward?

Went to Best buy again today. Folks, S8 Plus is just a tiny bit taller than S7 edge. Here it is right under my S7 edge.

Is it as wide? The 8+ looks narrower. It's ridiculous that a 5.5 inch phone is as wide as a 6.2 inch phone.

Then it's no different than watching a 2.35 1 aspect ratio film on a 1.85 1 TV. They'll have some black bars. Big deal
It is a big deal to Netflix fiends like me. The point is there was no reason for it. There is no advantage to it. Most of those films are edited to fit tv perfectly.

What modern phone can you swipe down for the notifications with one hand, anyway? I certainly can't on my S7 edge. I don't find it that hard to use my other hand for that. 99% of the time, I'm going to be enjoying the extra screen real estate.

Sure, there's a reason for it, and there's an advantage to it as well. Remember, The 16x9 aspect ratio was created to be viewed on a giant screen in a movie theater, long before any electronic hand held gadgets were invented.

The human hand is only so big on average, and so are pants pockets. The idea here was to create a phone that gives the most screen possible for texting, emailing, web surfing, etc while still maintaining a size that can be held, used, and pocketed comfortably. If it isn't perfect for 16x9 movie content, so what. I'll sacrifice that for the greater good the screen brings to the other things I mentioned

It is no good for games either

No issues here. I love big devices though. And the S8 plus is really no bigger than the S7 edge and it's the same size as my pixel XL.

I do see 18.5/9 = 2.05/1. Haven't run into any shows like that on Netflix yet but maybe all the old 16/9 content will be converted in the next year along with all the games. That will suck for the vast majority of phones that are 16/9

I'm not sure I'm following the complaint of the long screen. If you don't like it, that is why there is a S8 for you with otherwise the exact same specs. Some people want the bigger screen - like me. I like being able to see more text or more of whatever web page, etc. I'm browsing. Black bars? Seriously we are complaining about that? Simply just get the S8. It was designed for folks who don't want the bigger screen and form factor.

I just got one of my cases for the phone, and I also think the "can't reach the fingerprint sensor" to be a bit of a overreaction. If you anchor you phone on the middle of the palm of your hand, you should be able to reach it fine for the average person. It's just about half an inch taller than the S7e and the width is identical. The dimensions were published but it's weird that people were still wondering if it was wider or taller than the S7e. lol - you don't need a picture for that when you already see the specs.

If the phone came in one size, then I understand, but there is a smaller size and a bigger size. Get the one that you like?

Pixel, Pixel XL, Nexus 6P, Nexus 5X... Plus anything with Nova launcher actions, including an S8+.

I agree with you. I also think once everyone gets the phone they will enjoy the display and size after a short adjustment period. There is always a break in period for any new device. I also think video content will be added to the new aspect ratios pretty fast with Samsung and Apple going to these displays.

I had the G6 and the screen was no issue. The phone will scale the screen to maximize the screen size. Everything looked fine.

The S8+ has a one handed mode similar to other phones where you either tap the home button 3 times or swipe diagonally from either bottom corner to shrink the screen so you can reach it all one-handed. Then you just tap the area outside of the shrunken screen to return it to normal. I played with the phone for a few minutes at Best Buy today and got used to that gesture pretty quickly.

I don't know about that. Why should mobile phones be shackled to the 16x9 ratio, that essentially came about back in the 1930's or so when cinematic film came out?
Because most devices including millions of iPhones are and will remain this ratio (so content will mainly be too). Cropped or smaller content due to black bars all for the sake of Samsung now wanting thinner width seems less than functionally prudent for consumers.

Heck, even if the content fits the S8 display still crops due to the corner curves.

By the time content were to possibly catch up to this device ratio, most owners will be using another device.

I am 6' tall and have large hands. I can't reach notification bar on either model. Neither are one handed phones. If I wanted a one handed phone I'd buy one. If it's too large.... Move along.

Where did this idea that you must only use one hand with a phone comes from?

You can use it one handed... I am 5-11 have larger hands but not huge and I can use the demo model one handed.
