S9+ fingerprint scanner

Does anyone know why the fingerprint scanner on my S9+ will intermittently not work? And by intermittently I mean it hardly works at all.

It will vibrate and attempt to scan, but after 5 attempts the phone will require the use of the pattern to unlock the phone. Of course, if I setup a new fingerprint in settings, then it will work just fine. Is it simply a matter of the scanner not being very precise when your finger is cold or dry or basically different in some way then when I initially set it up?

You can try saving the same finger twice to increase the successful scan chances.
