Samsung Dex on Note 10

I've gotten DeX to work great on both my Dell desktop and Surface Pro 5. It is cool and all, however, that wasn't the original intent of DeX. It was to turn your phone into a laptop (essentially a Chromebook).

My question is this:

Do you NEED Samsung's DeX Dock, DeX Pad, or the Multiport Adaptor to use DeX without a laptop/desktop? What third party multiple port adapters would allow me to use DeX as it was originally designed.

Would a third party USB-C multiport adapter, BT keyboard and mouse, and a wireless display adapter "trigger" DeX, and allow me to use my phone like I would a laptop?

Just curious... Has anyone ever used SideSync? I used to use it with my Note 8.

So I hooked up a Belkin USB C hub with a keyboard and mouse and monitor to my brand new Note 10+ and was actually able to use it like a desktop/laptop. I currently have spotify playing on a bluetooth speaker while typing up this post! Nice!!!!!
What is the model of the Belkin USB-C hub are you using?

I'm interested in trying it, but with a BT keyboard and mouse, and a wireless display adapter. All of which I have.

No, that's different. As of the Note 10+, DeX is two slightly separate things.

1. The "old" DeX where you connect a usb-C to HDMI cable to an external monitor or TV, and get a Desktop interface.
2. New DeX,where you plug your phone into a computer via usb-C to usb-C (or usb-C to usb-A, if that's all your computer has), and install the Samsung DeX app on your Windows or Mac computer. The app on your computer will act as a "monitor" and let you control your phone from your computer, but with a desktop-like interface. Also you can drag and drop files from your computer into the DeX window.

Hope that helps! You should try DeX out, it's pretty great. I'm using it right now to post (using method 1).
Not quite true. There is no "old" DeX or "new" DeX. There is just DeX. Samsung added the ability to use DeX on your laptop/desktop.

Here is a review of DeX. I think the one thing he missed was that DeX was designed primarily for "traditional" corporate/work scenarios. Much like Microsoft's Continuum, it was designed for business travelers as a laptop replacement. Meaning the only things that a business user would need would be a keyboard, mouse, USB-C to HDMI cable, and a Note 10/10+. All of which takes up less space and weight in a bag. The user would then plug into the hotel room TV (most hotel room TVs are HDMI now) or, if visiting a client, access to a monitor. The user also isn't dependent on network connectivity because files can be locally stored on the phone.

Desktop/laptop connection, gaming, and other items like Netflix are, for right now, an after thought. It DEFINITELY wasn't designed as a laptop replacement for multimedia content creation.

I personally never saw much value in the old Dex HDMI mode. Personally I think the USB C cable to computer is a very different experience and one I find valuable. I guess the old Dex is good if you don't have a laptop, but I have to carry my computer everywhere I go for work. I am doing demos and I need to generally run at least two VMs for my demos. I actually do like the new Dex experience with the Desktop app.

My experience has been very different from the Video as far as screen quality and lag. Maybe the cable I am using makes a difference. I do a lot on my phone while on planes (PowerPoint, Word and Excel). I love the option to then connect the phone to the computer to use a larger display and when necessary to easily copy files. Also, great to use to laptop speakers when needed.

I don't know about calling it a new Dex or just a new Dex experience, but to me I am actually using Dex now. I never saw any value or use for me with Dex on my Note 8. When I am in the office with my multi-monitor setup, I am really enjoying having my phone on one of my screens. Keeps me from picking up the phone in the office to check messages and other notifications. Although Link to computer with MS Your Phone also works well for notifications. I am happy that Samsung and Microsoft are working together provide new integrations.

The great part is there are now two options to help meet different needs.

Niiiiice. Having a completely wireless experience from phone to laptop would be fantastic. But I hope that doesn't require buying yet another new upgraded phone!
Microsoft managed it with the Lumia 950/950XL with Continuum.

Btw, I don't think it's what you think it is.

It's wireless to the monitor, keyboard, and mouse.

In a nutshell, you'd need:

A monitor
A wireless display adapter (Miracast or Chromecast)
BT mouse
BT keyboard

By the way, there was a recent update to the DEX app on my Windows laptop last week. I installed the update, but haven't played around with it since. What I like about the DEX app is that as soon as I plug in my phone to my Windows laptop via USB-C cable, the DEX app immediately boots up in seconds and is ready to be used.

I've played with it. I didn't see anything new. At least nothing stood out to me anyway.
