I have been interested in rooting my phone (stock epic 4g) so I can run 2.2+ without waiting for Sprint to update me.
I am also interested in running ext4 fs as that is what I use on all of my PCs and I highly doubt Samsung can improve on ext4 which has been thoroughly vetted by the OSS community (which is another problem I have -- I don't have Windows at all, on any machine).
Anyway, I use VirtualBox to virtualize Windows for occasional things (like configuring my Harmony Remote Control for example)... And here is what I found -- VirtualBox allows me to pass-thru a USB device, from Linux host (to my Windows virtual guest) and it works fine for my Epic when I am running my Epic in normal mode. BUT, when I boot my phone in download mode, my linux system does not even recognize it at all, so it does not pass it through to the virtualized Windows guest OS.
So... I borrowed a friend's PC and followed the thread here (
[Stock Flash][Odin]Dk28 Extended 12/05/2010 inc. Root,GPS hack,Clockwork+Redir. - xda-developers). His Windows PC picked up the phone in download mode (After I installed the Samsung drivers), but when I followed the steps, exactly, I got four rows of data in Odin (the last one was SetupConnection) and it just sat on that step forever 30+ minutes. I tried this many times and had to remove the battery each time to try again.
With that said... Is there another way I can get what I want
- ext4 (not absolute must but would like to have)
- Clockwork installed (whatever version is right)
- Froyo+ (But I suppose with Clockwork I could install Eclair ROMs as well?)
A way that does not REQUIRE Windows would be a big plus for me.
