Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

im gunna have to think back lol but

i ran the ext4
update.zip froyo
clockworked'd the ext4nightmare rom

then realized i had no gps lock. soo...
i flashed back to stock elciar, and odin'd the dk28 modem.

and since then i said F*ck it and left it where it was, and that was like a good month ago, NOW im reallllyyy getting sick of waiting for the official froyo and i want it back again, this time the right way (with working gps) :(

Okay, can you boot into download mode? (hold 1+power)

If you can then go to [How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone) to put you back to Eclair 2.1 (DI18) and see if you can get it going again. Then if that works you can go forward to Froyo and do it all correctly and maybe even get your GPS going too..

If Odin doesn't make it happen there is Heimdall also listed there in that How To section. That has worked for some when Odin hasn't.

thank you so much, ill be working on this all night.

@Robcy, yes same technique.

I tried it, but I am still getting the CWM 3. A little history. I tried the Quantum ROM with EXT4 about a month ago, and installed CWM3. The Bluetooth was not working so I Odin back to 2.1, and then ran the Update.zip for stock 2.2.1. I rooted with One click z4root. I odin'ed back to stock 2.1, but the CWM3 is still there. The issue is that its meant to look for EXT4 from the get go, and convert if not found. Since I am on stock 2.2.1 with RFS it kills my install, and I have to reinstall. I have tried the One click your provided, and it says that it installed, but as soon as I death grip the phone, it start CWM3, and I have to start over again as it blows my install. I have a very good backup so I am not sweating it, but I am at a wall with CWM3.

Is there a way to totally go back to stock 2.1 everything. If I Odin the SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 file the CWM3 remains.

Any help will be great.

Okay, along with the SPH-D700-DI18-8Gb-REL.tar.md5 you listed I assume your also using the s1_odin_20100512.pit file?

If that method is not working have you tried this method?

Flash this in CWM3

It is for converting from EXT4/CWM3 back to RFS system/CWM 2.x.x.x with a slightly modded deodexed/rooted Froyo DK28.

If that works then your at least back on RFS and CWM2 and then we can work from there.

I did not use the s1_odin_20100512.pit. I only entered the DI18 into the PDA. I knew it had to be something simple. I will try it again, this time with that .pit file. If it does not work I will try the second option. Thanks for all of your help I really appreciate it.

When I try to unzip cwm3 I get this error- ! C:\Users\Matt\Desktop\OneClickRootCWM3.zip: The archive is either in unknown format or damaged

I've tried to re-download and everything, still not working.

I'm not sure what to say, that file from here has been downloaded and used hundreds of times with no issues.

Use 7zip or WinRaR to unzip and try redownloading it again.

It ended up being my AV. I disabled it and re-downloaded, works now. Thanks!

I have tried this multiple times, and when I go to install the custom ROM i get the Samsung screen and no further.

Please provide a bit more information. Were you upgrading to EXT4/CWM3 using the OneClickRootCWM3.zip?

Was the ROM you were trying to flash and finish the installation of EXT/CWM3 a ROM that supported this format? If you could let us know which ROM and version.

When you finished the conversion to EXT4/CWM3 were you in CWM with orange text?

Anything else you could provide will help.

Thanks.

Hey guys I have a question. I just got this Epic 4g, moved from OG Droid. I absolutely hate samsung's contacts app. I have already rooted and installed a whole buch of roms, but the all have the default contacts app. Is there a way I can get the clean android contacts app. I know cyanogen has a 6.2 rom, but its quite buggy. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

The chef of the AOSP Quantum ROM has been talking about porting the vanilla Android contacts and dialer. As you've already mentioned, Cyanogen has a working one. MIUI might have a non-Samsung contacts app as well (haven't flashed it, but it's pretty much all custom so I imagine the contacts app would be as well).

thanks for the quick reply. So I as I understand it there's nothing with stock except Cyanogen mod correct? At least at this point.

hi i root my phone but when i reboot my phone dont turn on is just the screen with samsung mobile .com what i do wrong

You needed to flash a EXT4 supporting ROM to complete the installation/conversion.

6. Clockwork v3.0.0.5 will automatically convert your filesystem from RFS to EXT4, so you're now ready for some EXT4 ROMs :D Note: if you try and boot your phone after converting to EXT4, you will get stuck on the Samsung screen. You need to flash an EXT4 ROM before booting, so proceed to Step 7.

7. Congratulations! The hard part is over - now all that's left is to flash an EXT4 ROM.

You should have the zip file of the ROM you want to flash already on your SD card from Step 3. Boot into Clockwork v3.0.0.5 by turning off your phone, then holding volume down+camera+power buttons (do NOT use an app to reboot to recovery, see Important Notes below). You can use the volume buttons to move up and down in the menus, and camera for select.

It's always a good idea to wipe your phone before flashing a ROM to avoid conflicts. To perform a wipe, while in the Clockwork main menu go to: wipe data/factory reset>yes.

Now to flash your ROM. Go to: install zip from sdcard>choose zip from sdcard>(navigate to the ROM zip on your SD card)>(select it using the camera button)>yes. Your ROM will now be flashed.
Do a battery pull and restart your phone by booting into CWM and finish the steps as instructed.

when u talk about rom which file is that please help me

The ROM is whichever ROM you decided on, example TrulyEpic Rebirth/Bonsai/midNIGHT. That is the ROM file you needed to download and place on your sdcard before starting this entire procedure. You can take you sdcard out of your phone and put it in the included sdcard adapter and load it directly from a sdcard reader on your computer.

3. Download the zip file of the ROM you want to flash, and place it on your phone's SD card. where i get this file , i had to get this file of OneClickRootCWM3.zip

hey for some reason, when i first boot into the new CWM mod, it kept saying for the first few lines of code as it was installing: "failed to mount EXT4 checking..." it said this about 4 times. But if you successfully downloaded the CWM 3.0.0.5, does it mean you have EXT4?
