Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

I am really interested in trying this out, would anyone recommend this to me as a first attempt at rooting and flashing a custom rom? Or is there a better way to "get my feet wet"?

Will it keep Swype?

will changing the file systems remove swype? I think its part of samsung's install and wondering if it will be deleted if I try this.

All I can say is wow! The improvement in performance is impressive. I did some stress testing right away and installed a 50+ apps in a short period of time and the horrible lag that used to be present is completely gone. The phone just flies now.

My phone went from frustrating on a daily (or hourly?) basis to being a pleasure to use.

It would only be removed if the ROM you flash has it removed by the developer.

You can download Swype from here and flash the .zip file using ClockWork 2.5.1.2 or newer once on EXT4.

Note: This download of Swype will work on NON-EXT4 also for those interested.

alright I'm trying to read through the steps on my phone and I'm getting confused.
I'm running quantum 2.0 can I just download and flash the first file that says it'll give me quantum 2.5?

Or is there some necessary steps to get ext4 thing going?

You should be coming from a complete Stock DK28 Froyo version to install the EXT4 file system so you don't have any issues.

Of course then that requires you to reroot/reinstall clockwork... Since you already know how to preform those steps being rooted now you could go with the "New Procedure" and get done quicker.

it will not let me install the rom at the end it keeps saying e file error how can i fix this?

While you're in Clockwork, look at the top of the screen and make sure it says version 2.5.1.2. Using the old Clockwork can cause problems.

Converting to EXT4 will get you rooted and will give you a custom ROM, so I'd say just go for it.

If you havent upgraded to EXT4, I would hold off:

EXT4 is dangerous on OneNAND - xda-developers

It looks like EXT4 can damage OneNand in the phone.

This is debatable. Some say this will shorten the life, others say it may lengthen it. If you're like most people and plan on using your 1yr or 2yr Sprint upgrade, I wouldn't worry about it.

As Paul627g mentions above, the best way to minimize problems is to come from a fresh install of Froyo, rooted w/Clockwork redirect. However if you already have DK28 rooted w/redirector, you can try starting at Step 2 of the New Procedure. If anything gets funky, you can always Odin back to stock Froyo and start again at Step 1.

Hey, quick question...regarding some of the Quadrant scores I have seen posts install? I am only getting around 1000 or so which isn't much better than before I rooted to EXT4. I am using Quantum ROM, would another ROM like Midnight make a speed difference?

Thanks, Ken.

Seems very low... My wife's Epic on Bonsai v.1.0.4 (NO EXT4) is pulling right about 1000 on average. I'm getting anywhere between 1500-1680 (my highest) since going to Bonsai v1.1.2 w/EXT4 MOD in place. Even before I added the 15% EXT4 MOD I was still getting low 1500's.

Do you have a lot of apps running when you take your Quadrant test? Normally everyone shuts down everything except for the bare essentials when they do these test for maximum scores.

BTW, I have ran both midNIGHT and Bonsai's EXT4 ROMs and they are about the same in scores... I would say Quantum's is right up there with them too.

How is the battery life using this ROM? I installed DK28 when it came out and it absolutely killed my battery (10+ hours to under 4 hours). Thanks!!

So far it doesn't seem that bad. I would say I'm getting in the range of 10+ hrs or better. Note I do run wifi a lot so that does eat up juice quicker. I will admit I haven't put down my phone much since I updated to EXT4 but it really doesn't seem to be a "power killer" from the EXT4 file system.

All of the custom ROMs since the leaked DK28 Froyo are better on battery management.

Firstly, are we talking about same benchmark, Quadrant standard? I just ran it again with all apps I could close, and got a 985. I have restarted Epic then run it, same...about 1005 or so.

On a separate note, how does one get the GPS working again?

Thanks, Ken.

With EXT4 I have the same battery life, if not better.

You can try this (third option), or use the procedure in this thread to start over, completing Step 0 to fix GPS.

Hmmm very interesting... Especially when you have people like noobnl and firon taking notice to this... Makes me wonder if we should be staying on EXT4 ...

LOL! That's a real soap opera of a read...

but if you dig through it- looks like Daemon has done his research. Not that concern of noobnl isn't warranted- but once you read and understand the concerns of both sides, I'd write this up a tad more risky as rooting in general...nothing more.

Yep, it is a real soap opera over there. I do respect what both are trying to say. I guess in the end its just like anything else we do with regards to rooting/custom roms/kernels that you take the responsibility into your own hands that something hardware or software may go wrong.

It does sound like for the average life of these phones (probably a year or two from original release date for most) they probably will be okay. Only time will tell and I'm sure many will keep an eye on that topic.

Thanks! Have a question though.

I did the new procedure with midnight 2.5 rom. Everything worked great. However, decided to try out latest build of the Cyanogenmod 6.1, did a backup on CW, and odined back to DK28 prerooted with clockwork installed.

Flashed the Cyanogenmod, and now decided to go back to the midnight rom.

I can just boot into CW and restore the backup right? And I will still have the EXT4 system right? Or will I need to do all the steps again in original post?

Thanks!
