Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

Well I have instructed, talked and answered questions on this for about 2 days now and finally I took the dive and went from DK28 Froyo/rooted/CWM v2.5.1.2/EXT4 and reappeared on DK28 Froyo/rooted/CWM v3.0.0.5/EXT4 (w/Edify) on Bonsai v1.1.3.

I took the long route because old habits die hard, Odin back to stock>update.zip to Froyo/OneClickRootCWM3/Bonsai v1.1.3. Took me 45 minutes from start to finish with 30 apps reinstalled automatically.

No problems, works like a charm and I still get to keep my nice 3 meter GPS lock I've always enjoyed :p

Follow the steps provided in this thread and you can't go wrong friends. All the credit/thanks goes to all the devs/cooks at XDA Developers Forums and last but not least Ragnarokx for making all this possible for us to get threw and enjoy.

Ok so I tryed do this and when I booted up clockwork it redid all files to ext4 and did the reboot system and it would never get out of the samsungmobile screen. I had to go back to stock so it would boot up. Then I tryed to run straight froyo but it was buggy so back to stock again. Is it just me or what?

You're not giving a whole lot of info to go off of - but here is a sure fire fix that should work: go to the bottom of the 1st post of this thread where it says "New: Restore to Froyo DK28". Follow that procedure to get to stock Froyo. Once done, follow the steps in this thread and you should be golden.

-Yea, I've had Froyo for a while. i finally got it working. what i did was download A different ROM, cause the one Quantum ROM wasn't working for some odd reason. but when i tried MidNIGHT ROM, it kept aborting so just pulled the battery. I tried turning it on, and Quantum was loaded. and everything works now. (i did leave it running for like 20 min the first time around since it said it might take some time. just kept on Samsung screen, and blinked ever so often, couldn't turn it off with power button or anything) Point is. phone works perfect, and is Blazing FAST. my Gallery loads around 4-5 seconds and i got like 250 pictures and a few videos. while before it would take 2-3 seconds for ten at a time.
Thank you!

Ok so let me get this straight.. can I install CWM 3.0.0.5 while on Android 2.1 and then flash a DK28 ROM? Or do I need to be on a DK28 Rom before flashing the CWM 3.0.0.5?

First get on DK28 stock then do the steps in the first post to install CWM 3.0.0.5 which will root/CWM3.0.0.5/EXT4 all in one step for you.

I have been interested in rooting my phone (stock epic 4g) so I can run 2.2+ without waiting for Sprint to update me.

I am also interested in running ext4 fs as that is what I use on all of my PCs and I highly doubt Samsung can improve on ext4 which has been thoroughly vetted by the OSS community (which is another problem I have -- I don't have Windows at all, on any machine).

Anyway, I use VirtualBox to virtualize Windows for occasional things (like configuring my Harmony Remote Control for example)... And here is what I found -- VirtualBox allows me to pass-thru a USB device, from Linux host (to my Windows virtual guest) and it works fine for my Epic when I am running my Epic in normal mode. BUT, when I boot my phone in download mode, my linux system does not even recognize it at all, so it does not pass it through to the virtualized Windows guest OS.

So... I borrowed a friend's PC and followed the thread here ([Stock Flash][Odin]Dk28 Extended 12/05/2010 inc. Root,GPS hack,Clockwork+Redir. - xda-developers). His Windows PC picked up the phone in download mode (After I installed the Samsung drivers), but when I followed the steps, exactly, I got four rows of data in Odin (the last one was SetupConnection) and it just sat on that step forever 30+ minutes. I tried this many times and had to remove the battery each time to try again.

With that said... Is there another way I can get what I want
- ext4 (not absolute must but would like to have)
- Clockwork installed (whatever version is right)
- Froyo+ (But I suppose with Clockwork I could install Eclair ROMs as well?)

A way that does not REQUIRE Windows would be a big plus for me.

Read post #1 carefully and follow the instructions to get Froyo, root access, Clockwork and EXT4.

is there anything i should do to get MidNIGHT rom to work? cause the only one that works is Quantum. I tried using older versions of CWM and did the odin stuff, but still, only Quantum works? Midnight/Viper/Frankienstien have all had the same "installation aborted"
Kernel version: 2.6.32.9
Build number: Quantum Rom v2.7.0.DK28-EXT4

if this is the wrong thread for this, please direct me to the right one.( btw this whole rooting business is addictive, thanks for the new drugs ragnarokx =] )

VIPERrom [Apocalypse] EXT4 DK28 4.0.2a
- this is the one i really want. i also downloaded the 4 step one "VIPERrom INSTALLzip.zip" but i always get errors and what not.

Frankenstein_FROYO_v14wEXT4s

midNIGHT v2.4EXT4 dual (NAKED)

For midNIGHT you need v2.6 for it to be flashable with Clockwork v3.0.0.5.

As for Frankenstein, I think there is something funky with that ROM. I flashed version 12 I think, and it wouldn't boot. I had to flash the EXT4 kernel after flashing the ROM to get it up and running.

As for Viper:
DO NOT!!!! Flash This ZIP You Download... You Need To EXTRACT It And There Will Be 4 Zips Inside It And Install Instructions!

ok, cool. Frankie is out,
i will try Midnight in a bit.

I followed Viper to a T, but only the second and Fourth zips would work. the only reason i want Viper is cause of the sexy Notification bar, any way i could do this with Quantum? btw, this is the first time ever on a forum, and i must say, your making this a good experience

BONZAI!!! Sweet! Rooted finally thanks to you guys here!

So, uh, what do I do now? I would like to have wireless tether. Any way that can happen?

I'm here to help :D

I can try and make a flashable zip of that notification bar for you. What's the name of the zip file that has that notification bar?

I went from Quantum v2.5 Ext4 to Quantum v2.7 Ext 4 (edify) i think. Do I have to go through the whole process again or do I just update clockwork (and how do you update clockwork) and flash ROM?

What I did was try to update clockwork via ROM manager. Somehow I booted into clockwork and it said v2.5.1.0 then it said v2.5.1.2 and finally it said v3.0.0.2 but not v3.0.0.5.

I formatted and cleared cache and loaded ROM. It seems to work. On "about" it shows v2.7.0 and 2.6.32.9 kernel. How do I know if it has edify? I assume it does.
