Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

First off thanks to all of you, especially ragnarokx for all this great info. I'm about to start the whole process from a totally stocked, unrooted epic. I'm hoping to flash to DK28, then follow the first post in this thread. Just wanted to ask a couple of noobish questions before I start.

1) At what point should I use a backup program (titanium or mybackup) just in case things go bad. Since I have to be rooted for titanium, should I install this after rooting but before flashing new roms?

2) At any point, will I loose all my applications (paid apps), text messages, files that are saved on the phone's memory when I either convert the file systemm flash to froyo or flash a new rom?

1.) Since you will be starting with a clean plate once you go from stock Eclair to Froyo you can start backups with either Titanium or MyBackUp once you get setup and rooted on Froyo. As a rule of thumb once your rooted and have ClockWorkMod installed, before flashing to a new ROM use NANDROID backup in ClockWork to backup before switching. This way if something doesn't work out you can always restore data.

2.) Once you get to Froyo, the first time you boot up you will be asked during the startup process (right after you log into your Google account) if you want Google to backup your apps/data. From that point on Google will remember your apps/settings/data so whenever you switch ROMs as long as the ROM has it enabled (most do) it will automatically restore your apps/data/settings from the previous ROM. This is called the Android Setup Wizard. Pretty cool huh?

Its a completely automated process, it will do it all for you. Best thing to do if you have your phone connected to wifi at home is once you start switching ROMs I always after first boot immediately go and setup my wifi so it can download all my 30+ apps quickly and not have to wait for 3g/4g to download them.

On top of the Android Setup Wizard it is still a good idea to use MyBackUp or other means to save your texts/call logs/etc. if that is something you value as some people do.

Enjoy and good luck!

"wait for phone to reconnect"

I'm new to this stuff, but am trying to run this ext4 root and it gets to where it asks to reset adb, and then I do, and it sits there "wait for phone to reconnect" and nothing ever happens. Am I doing something wrong?

Update - Scratch that. Fixed it. Didn't know I needed to close the run.bat and reopen it. Worked then.

Paul627g, thank you very much for your reply. This was really helpful. I'm really looking forward to doing this in a couple of days. I decided to just bite the bullet and bought MyBackup Pro for the $5 just in case I mess something up prior to rooting and installing a backup program. I will also be sure to use the NANDROID backup in ClockWork.

im a N00b on a Mac.
Can anyone help me do this from my mac please??

TY,
Jon

You could try downloading the Android SDK, opening the .bat file and running all the commands manually. But I'd suggest finding a Windows computer to use for 10 minutes, it will be much easier.

Hi, this is my first post, I'm beginning my adventures into the vast void of Android with this thread :P.

So, pardon me if this is dumb, but I'm stock on the command prompt, near the beginning, "Wait for phone to reconnect". It just stays on this line and doesn't do anything.

I've gotten stock froyo on the thing with Clockwork 2.whatever. I'm now trying to get to this version (3.whatever) in order to flash TrulyEpic onto my phone. What am I missing? I've tried reconnecting the phone and what not, but it doesn't do anything. Am I missing something? I've run all the drivers as far as I know.

Thanks for the help!

Thanks for the suggestion. I've tried that 5 times now. I've also restarted my computer, toggled USB debugging on and off, and various other things. THis is the third USB port I've tried, and I've reinstalled the drivers. I'm pretty baffled at the moment. This is the text I end up getting every single time.

"[*] adb connection will be reset. restart adb server on desktop and re-login.
Wait for phone to reconnect...
Root was not obtained after 60 seconds. Make sure the phone is connected and tha
t adb is working. If adb shell isn't root, reboot the phone and try the script a
gain.
Press any key to continue . . ."

When I press any key to continue, it doesn't work, of course, because it can't find my phone.

In need of some help... I have cwm3, and I put the trulyepic zip on my SD card, so I go into cwm3 and try to flash... it automatically backs up my old ****, and converts to ext4 without me doing anything, then I can't find the trulyepic file that I put on there. So right now, my phone is pretty much stuck. Tried to restore back in cwm3 to no avail, no idea what to do now. I'll turn my phone on and it just sits at the samsung screen.

Edit: oops, wrong thread.

How about this?

If the command prompt asks you to restart adb, you need to go into Windows Task Manager (ctrl-alt-del on your keyboard) and end adb in the process tab, then go into the folder from Step 2 and double-click on the "adb" file to restart adb.

There is a slight amount of "progress" (if you can call it that)when I do that, and I've done it before, but just now realized that it's a lil' different.

When I restart adb.exe, the prompt just hangs. It doesn't actually time out as I posted before, it just waits for the phone to reconnect. From here I've tried unplugging and replugging the phone, etc. to no avail.

Thanks so much for working with me on fixing this! You seem to be a one-man-wonder around here.

Haha thanks, I try - luckily I also have a lot of wonderful members that help out as well.

These scripts can be finicky. When I used one to root my Epic a while ago it took many tries and seemed to then work for no particular reason. Try again tomorrow, and if I think of anything I'll post it here.

Alrighty, so I tried a different cable on a different computer, my laptop, and still no success. :( It still just says "Wait for phone to reconnect".

Is there any way I can give up on this script and try something else? Basically, is there some other way to get TrulyEpic and the latest Clockwork on my phone?

Thanks for your time and patience.

Sounds like you've got whatever I've got. I have essentially the same issue. A little different, but in the end I feel like it's essentially the same.

Tell me if you find out anything.

yeah ive been reading an reading. the amount of info is overwhelming almost. lol. im just trying to figure out what im doing wrong now lol. im finding out that i dont know what im doing lol

WOOO!!! I finally got it to work.

For those who were having the same issue as me, make sure you're using STOCK Froyo (NOT already rooted). Not the version found that comes pre-rooted, but rather the version found here. Then it works like a charm.
