Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

i am using the stock froyo i think it might be this old a** comp im using. its kinda picky anyway. so if this process is also finicky i think im in trouble. lol. i tried and tried un plugged played musical usb cords( 4 total) adb process kills and restarts(ithink) so im about to try one more time this am. fingers crossed all.

alas no dice.if it does anything it tries to do something to the files then it says phone diconnected reboot and try script again. when i hit enter poof the black window goes away. it did this once it hung at copy and run eploit hit any key

Hey Ragnarok! Hopefully you'll answer me quick, but im in the process of installing your new AC Epic rom, and just to make sure, i went through the lag fix of course, and to make sure im running EXT4 i used the Adb shell commands, but this is what its giving me, is this correct?
I came from 2.1 Eclair ( haven't wiped it or anything, just did the Restore to Froyo part of the How to thread.)
Didn't mess with the Froyo that much, appart from browsing its settings and see if my contacts was linking and i can make calls, data serv..ect.. hopefully this didn't mess anything up when rooting it to the ext4 partition.
Thank you :)
ass you can tell, it says permission denied, is that ok?
sorry if it was answered previously, I'll change my reply if i do find the answer thank you!
-edit-
well i tried to boot into CW3.0.0.5
and it says Checking for Ext4 partitions...
checked the system mount, and it returns with Invalid Arguments stating that the system might be RFS and not ext4.
:/
what did i just do?
rght now is making a backup named.. (before-ext4-covert-1295112004.)
then it says to try restoring it.

So you went through the run.bat step 4 and the command prompt's last lines were : read finished, cleaning up files, press any key to exit script, press any key to continue? then you did the adb commands and got the above result?

My recommendation would be to running run.bat again then test, if that doesn't work then restart your laptop and phone and start from step one again...make sure you didnt skip any steps....this shouldn't take that long since you weren't in too far.

well when i did the Press any key to continue, the cmd closed, so i reopened a new cmd and just went to the directory where the adb is, and started the commands, and this is what i got.

I just flashed into AC Epic and things seems normal, no problems from what i see, should i redo and Flash Froyo back up again, then retry this installation? making sure it works?

thank you for helping out in both threads btw!

No don't reflash to froyo. If you were able to to get TrulyEpic flashed and running then you have EXT4 working.

awesome! n. n thank you for the abundance of help! and same goes for ragnarok for his rom!
Kikoshi, this is a normal part of the setup process. Once it reboots and does the cleanup and restore (setting up the EXT4) and brings you to the Orange and Black CWM 3.0.0.5 you are ready to go...

Flashing of any NON-Compatible CWM 3.0.0.5 roms/scripts will not work.

This same basic outcome has been discussed quite a few times, and the answer is about the same.. If your at the Orange and Black CWM 3.0.0.5 screen after running the OneClickRootCWM3.zip setup process you are done. Sucess!

Flash and enjoy!

Did the install, it got all the way to "read finished" then nothing happened. So I unplugged and used the phone, everything was fine. Booted into CWM3 and it converted to EXT4, but then when I tell it to reboot the system it opens up to the SAMSUNG :: Mobile Exciting!! - Samsung Mobile :: screen and just hangs there. Pulled the battery, turned it on, same thing. I pulled the battery and booted into CWM3 and did a wipe data/factory reset, againt tried to reboot, still hung up on SAMSUNG screen. help?

Ok I was up to step 4 and running the adb batch program, got about halfway thru it seems and I started getting messages that the phone wasn't giving permissions to write anything. The program then ended and I am still with the dk28 version, did I do something wrong? I am on Kernel 2.6.32.9 and Build Froyo.dk28 which I thought was the right Froyo to be on.

You have to install an EXT4 ROM before booting up.

Read through the first post again and try some of the grayed-out troubleshooting text.

As you can tell I am new to this . . . so I got the install done, just as screen shots show on your first set of instructions. So you're saying I have to first get the ROM on my SD card and then run this again?

Take your SD card out, stick it in your adapter that came with the phone, and connect it to your computer. Copy a ROM on there, then put your SD card back and flash the ROM in Clockwork.

Officially stumped and desperate

Alright, so, after much debate, I decided to give rooting my phone another shot. After successfully rooting my device, I rebooted into CM3.0.0.5, performed a backup before my device converted to EXT4 and backed up after as well. I wiped the SD and cache to prepare for flashing a rom but found that after I did that, the device no longer made it past the black and white Samsung boot screen. I can access CM and download mode (for Odin) I have tried restoring from various backups, wiping the sd and cache again and rebooting but still with no success. I tried using Odin to flash DK28 which I was running before back onto my epic but find that it gets stuck at recovery.bin and often fails the write operation.

Am I entirely without hope or do I have a chance at breathing life back into my device?

If you boot into CWM what version does it say and what is the colors? Orange and Black? Also what ROM/version were you trying to flash ? If the ROM wasn't CWM 3.0.0.5 compatible then that probably was why it didn't get past the Samsung logo.

In answer to your second part about using Odin to flash back to Stock DK28 that will not work to my knowledge once your on CWM v3.0.0.5. You would have to use Odin and Restore back to factory stock Eclair to reset your filesystem/script. Once there you can do as you please and update to DK28 again.

[How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

Follow the instructions for Odin to Factory Eclair 2.1

Read post #271-275. Also note this part of the instructions:

Note: if you try and boot your phone after converting to EXT4, you may get stuck on the Samsung screen. You need to flash an EXT4 ROM before booting, so proceed to Step 7.

Okay, although this information has helped signifigantly, I'm no longer able to access the CMW boot screen. Several attempts with Odin to flash D18 result in nothing as it ends up hanging on param.lfs. I'm gonna try and use DK28 again and see if that changes things but this is very frigtening.

thank you everyone i finally got it. it was the old comp i was on i went to my parents and got on their newer comp and it cw3 bat an all ran 3rd time. lol thanks so much for all the support in here for all the noobs. i have a question now that im rooted is there any other suggestions anyone has like for starters ive read and reread so much lately im getting suggested apps and next moves confused.

for anyone having trouble with rooting like soo many say patience above all else. ive been at it off and on for a few days and it finally went.
lol. yeah definately make sure and put an ext4 rom on your sd before you do the conversion. just a hint lol. or read farther than me before panic

How do I get the most recent Clockwork Recovery? When I first converted to ext4 I believe the one we were told to use was 2.5.1.0 which is what I'm currently on. Where/how do I get the newest one. I have Rom Manager installed which I thought would allow me to update but it isnt.
