Samsung Epic 4G Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 for Froyo DK28

You are not supposed to UNZIP the ROM file. All you needed to do is download TrulyEpic Rebirth and place the zip file on your SD Card. Then go into ClockWorkMod and install the zip from SD card.

I know this now. I think the phone is stuck in the ex4 file system now and i cant put stock rom on it, any way i can repair this phone?

Yes, is there any way to fix this?

- When you boot into CWM what version does it say you have?

Does it have orange text with black background or green text with black background?

- I would make sure you have TrulyEpic Rebirth or other CWM3 compatible ROM sitting on your SD card. Then boot into CWM and flash the ROM. You have to do this to complete the conversion process. Your phone will no longer work with stock Froyo at this point.

Since your phone isn't booting up, you may need to pull your SD card out of your phone and put it into the SD card adapter that came with your phone. Then using your computer's card reader (I hope you have one or access to one) place that SD card adapter into your computer's card reader and put a fresh CWM3 compatible ROM (zipped, not opened or unzipped) on the card. Then put it back into your phone and try booting into CWM and flash again.

If everything else fails and you say Odin won't work to return to factory Eclair 2.1 then have you tried Heimdall also listed in the Factory Restore thread?

Can in take the SD card out and place an EXT4 ROM on it using your computer? If not, then try this link, use Odin to flash Froyo (DK28) stock, then place the unzipped ROM on the SD card and install/ run CW3.

has anyone made a stock DK28 ext4 compatible yet? I am looking for a stock load that i can use. If there is no stock version that i can use, which ROM is closest to stock dk28?

thanks, DS

Currently there is no stock Froyo DK28 that is EXT4 compatible that I'm aware of.

If your looking for something that is stripped down, doesn't have a lot of the fancy stuff that some ROMs have then I would suggest TrulyEpic Rebirth or midNIGHT. They are modified slightly with different launchers, a few tweaks and have the Sprint bloatware removed.

As far as restoring your Sprint Apps and any other stuff this can all be obtained by checking the first post of these ROMs for more information.

First things first

Ok. So between tonight and Sunday, it's highly likely that I'll be picking up an Epic. I'll probably play with it a little bit as is and then I'll want to Froyo and tweaking. :)

I've read a lot of the threads and tried to compile a bullet list of what I need to do. Please advise.

1. GPS - Check and see if it works since people seem to be having problems. How do I check this? Never used GPS before and it's something I'd like to have for when I travel. (I will be getting my MSL number as I always ask for it when I get with a new phone anyway.)

2. Restore to Froyo DK28 per the thread - [How to] Factory Restore (or Fix a Bricked Phone)

3. Make sure there's a ROM on my SD card and then convert to EXT4 per the thread - Epic Lag Fix: RFS to EXT4 (Now w/Clockwork v3.0.0.5)

4. Load up one of the ROMs and have an awesome phone. :) (I want to try midNIGHT and TER).

5. Pray that nothing went wrong. *lol*

When would be appropriate to install and backup the phone? I'm not sure if I would use Titanium Backup or MyBackup. Still reading about those. I am interested in having contacts, sms messages, apps, settings restored. I hate losing my sms messages because I do refer back to them. And once I install apps, I don't want to have to keep redoing everything.

Please keep in mind that aside from modding my Lotus to get Sprint's horrible carousel one click UI off and do the Pandora hack so I can listen to my stations, that I'm totally new to hacking/tweaking a phone.

I have essentially zero Android experience, but I'm very eager to learn. I hear it's quite addictive. *grin*

When you convert to ext4 and install a rom it automatically installs the apps you had before the conversion. So install all the apps you want, root with cw 3, install a backup(I use mybackup) backup just data(because your apps will be reinstalled automatically) and then install your rom.

Edit: oops forgot to say download odin and froyo for epic first. Flash with that then root. Sorry.

im stuck on samsung screen what do i do?

6. Clockwork v3.0.0.5 will automatically convert your filesystem from RFS to EXT4, so you're now ready for some EXT4 ROMs :D Note: if you try and boot your phone after converting to EXT4, you will get stuck on the Samsung screen. You need to flash an EXT4 ROM before booting, so proceed to Step 7.

7. Congratulations! The hard part is over - now all that's left is to flash an EXT4 ROM.
This is where your probably stuck at. You needed to place a downloaded ROM supporting CWM3/EXT4 on your SD Card before starting this process.

can you send me to a link to download said ROM? i tried to flash the ReRFS.Format.ROM.DK28-signed but idk please help

The one you selected is not for the new CWM3/EXT4 filesystem.

You need to pick one from our list here in the Rooting forums. TrulyEpic Rebirth, midNIGHT, Bonsai, Quantum, Viper.. Take your pick and download that ROM and place it on your SD card.

One easy way to document any apps you may have from Eclair is load AppBrain from Android Market- sync...then log on from your computer and print your phone's app list as a PDF. Makes for nice reference in case the cloud forgets something.

Purchased apps if from the Market always come back- its the free stuff where you run into issues.

Since 80% of your thread is about the EXT4 conversion, I'm going to go ahead and move your thread over there.

can anyone send me a link or instructions on how to do this on a mac?? I've looked everywhere but can't find any info.

Best thing to do is find a PC you can use for 30 minutes, or install Windows on Bootcamp (which is what I did).

i've already tried 2 pc's and a laptop, and 4 different usb cables. no luck. i was able to install CW2.5 with my mac but i want CW4 for the EXT4 rom's

Then find a copy of Windows XP, install it using Bootcamp. That way you can troubleshoot at your leisure.
