Samsung Galaxy 4 - File transfer app cannot find device

Its day two since I switched from Apple to Android and I'm trying to connect my Galaxy 4 to my iMac to transfer some files. After following instructions I downloaded the "Android file transfer" app and connected my S4. The device isn't recognised by the application, I just get a message asking to re-connect or re-start the device. I have tried both options but still cant connect my new S4.

Do you know how I can connect my Galaxy 4 to an iMac to transfer music?

I have an imac as well and came from iPhone. I used kies and easy phone sync to transfer all my stuff to my phone.

Thanks. What do you use to add music/files on a daily basis?

i use doubletwist/airsync to sync my itunes to my s4. have used it for years and its easy.
