Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

And it does seem a lot of people here are denying the fact that under low lights, this camera's software (I'm chunking it up to that not the hardware) itself sucks. Any good third party apps I can use?

Noone is saying under ideal outside lights, the camera isn't sharp. I love this phone but the camera in dark setting (which I am often in wether it be at work or at the club) is bad. Too much smoothing

We had two Note 3s and the sensors were different in size and color. That's how I knew.

I don't have another one to compare it to...so there is no way of telling within the OS or on the hardware itself?

I don't care for the camera at all. No matter how I set it the pictures are still blurry or dark. I like the camera on the Note 2 better.

Sent from the yummy gum drop GN3..

Yep, and it appears we all have defective camera according to some of these guys with magically better phones

NOTE 3: All You Need to Know - YouTube

This lady gets kits from Samsung and if you skip to 54:00 and watch from there, she mentions the blurry picture problem. I don't know how to get people to voice this to Samsung and get them to fix this crap. It's ruining this perfect phone for me that I do not want to return.

As has been mentioned before itt... change your iso settings to 800 and lower your ev by 1. And DISABLE smart stabilization. That helps tons. But yes this camera is gawd awful. Can't wait for the S5 tbh

fyi, camera fv5 can no longer save to external SD after kitkat update.

You need to play about with the settings a lot and take several shots. However it does take stunning photos once you optimise the settings for where you are and what you want to take a pic of. Obviously this maybe a problem if it's something that isn't static and you need to whip out your phone and quickly take a pic. I've owned the iPhone 5S. The camera on that is a lot easier to use and doesn't require any tweaking, you just point and shoot. However the depth and clarity of the pictures you get from the note is better than on the 5S if you invest the time to optimise your settings.

In low light settings the iPhone 5S will always win.

I find that with smart stabilization off and iso 800 my pics are quite bad. Auto ISO and SS on they are much better. Weird how it seems to vary? My iPhone 5 combined with Cortex Camera app made its low light unbeatable (imo). I hope cortex makes its way to andoid because its much better than the other noise reduction options out there. I prefer Note 3's daytime pics over iPhone though.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I switched from the s3 to the s4 and had horrible issues with the camera on the s4 so I quickly got rid of it and moved to the note 3 though the pictures are better than the s4 nothing has come close to the s3. I loved the pics my s3 took. But this proves that its not the megapixles but more a software problem. Samsung did something wrong after the s3 and the camera quality has gone down instead of up like it shoukd have.

Pretty sure the note 3 and the s4 have the same exact camera.

THE BEAST,,NOTE 3. SIZE IS EVERYTHING!!!

BS. I just took pics and videos on my Tmobile Note 3 yesterday and it saved to SD card

With camera fv5? I know the stock camera app will, but camera fv5 would not for me after kitkat, I don't remember it getting an update. awww, I had camera fv5 set to save to other than its default folder on the external sd card, maybe that is my problem, I will check it out and see, anyway, no "BS" as you kindly called it, intended.

Uninstalled and reinstalled camera fv -5, no go, will not save to external storage, no errors, picture appears to take, but nowhere to be found. So if you are talking about the stock camera app, in which case you didn't pay close attention to my post before accusing me of "BS" you are 100% correct, however, if you are talking about camera fv -5, my turn to call BS.

Isn't it stupid how the front facing camera is set to beauty face as default and there is no way to change that? Good grief smh

I have the same phone but my camera works perfectly fine .

Welcome to Android Central.

Thanks for resurrecting this infamous thread.
I agree that the camera is great for me. I would like to think most of the critics have changed their minds.
There is a limit to what the camera can do obviously, and there is some learning to do to get the most out of it (though I personally haven't tried much).
There is a very extensive camera guide to the Note 3 written by a member.
Enjoy.

I don't know if I'm using the camera wrong or if my phone is a lemon or what. But I am not happy with the camera quality of the Note 3. It just seems like every picture I take is really grainy and almost as if it has a filter applied to it to make it look like brushstrokes. It doesn't seem like 13mp at all, it acts more like it's a low quality front facing camera.

For instance, these photos of my cat have this filtered blurry effect. I took these with the auto mode.

When I turned on the flash the photo turned out a little better, although I'd rather have a crisp photo like this without the flash on.

So what's the deal, is this camera just bad with indoor lighting? I'm holding it extremely steading when taking photos, so the quality can't be due to that.

Sorry to but I think your the lemon as you need to read the instructions out of the box you get 9 mega pixel you need to do the settings for 13 mega pixel turn the flash on auto your good to go

Ulimate Note 3

I have the exact same problem even with 13 megapixel setting!!! Anyone found out an easy way to fix it??
Faces and objects still have that smeared airbrushed artificial look even during daylight:(

I'm so sad!

I thought I'd update on my situation regarding the Note 3 camera, since it's changed completely.

After using it as my exclusive "casual shooter" for about six months, I realized I'm far too demanding to be satisfied with any smartphone camera, even for casual shooting, no matter how advanced it might be (even the most expensive/highest performance ones on the market that's superior to the Note 3).

I do lots of candid/subject-tracking shooting, where I'm basically shooting the way a paparazzi would, and I need professional level autofocus that's blazing fast and accurate, as well as have AF-tracking. I also need very short shot-to-shot delay (virtually instantaneous), fast continuous shooting, and robust buffer that can handle machine-gunning of the shutter. In terms of image quality, I need acceptable high ISO performance with results that aren't just acceptable, but can actually be considered "photography" quality, as well as depth-of-field control that only larger sensors are capable of (post-processing of selective blur doesn't count--it has its limitations and is time-consuming).

Obviously, all smartphones fail when scrutinized with such demanding expectations, so I did the only thing that made sense, which was to abandon using my smartphone as a casual camera. Instead, I researched the current larger sensor compacts on the market such as the Sony RX100 series, the Canon G1X series, as well as mirrorless systems. After doing lots of testing, I ended up with the Olympus OM-D E-M1 and the 12-40mm f/2.8 Pro lens. I carry it with a top-loading styled holster bag and the whole thing is small and light enough that it doesn't really get in my way as an ubiquitous camera that I take with me everywhere I go. The kind of shots I could get with that setup is so far above what the Note 3 can do that it's not even worth going into details about (I can show you guys some photos if you want to see).

Now, the Note 3's camera is only used when I need to document something to keep as a record on my phone, such as getting addresses/phone numbers/store hours from a web page before I head out, or to take a shot of something I see when out and about to remind myself to look it up later.

I think until the day smartphone cameras improve enough to be able to compete with dedicated cameras in every way, I won't be going back to them as causal shooters again. Hard to say if it'll ever happen, since the laws of physics place certain limitations on size/performance that will be extremely hard to overcome. Could it happen in my life-time? It's probably more than likely--we'll have to wait and see.

From day one I noticed how bad the camera was. I broke it down to the stock camera app being the culprit. For what ever reason even on full resolution it lacks detail. A very simple and foolproof way to prove this is by getting just about any other camera app, taking the exact same picture zoom in and you can see the deference in the detail. After doing so I now love the Note camera. The only down side, I've found no aftermarket app that is even close to being as fast as the stock one by a long shot so I still use it if I'm in a situation where I MUST get the shot.
