Samsung Galaxy Note 3 - Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

I don't agree with how much importance he places on the 4K video. To most people, 4K video is totally irrelevant to their needs. But he did deduct a point for the missing night mode, and perhaps he should have deducted one more point for the aggressive low-light processing Samsung's camera app does. To be fair though, even with more points deducted, Note 3's camera is still one of the best in cutting-edge smartphones, so when people say that it "sucks," it sounds like hyperbole, ignorance, and lack of photography understanding.

I was somewhat shocked that there was no night mode. I kept thinking I was overlooking it somehow.

It definitely doesn't "suck". My top 3 would be (in order of preference): Lumia 1020, iPhone 5s, galaxy S4.

I read that the Lumia's camera is great but the phone is one of the darkest shades of hideous I've had the displeasure of seeing. I'll take a somewhat more average camera and have the phone not be an eyesore to me any day. The tumor on the back doesn't help it's aesthetics at all, nor does the school-crossing yellow or cyanide blue I keep seeing it in. I have a Sony point and shoot and 2 prosumers so my Note 3's camera will continue to be great for what it's use will be.

Amen on the hideous!

He USUALLY puts out some really good "unbiased" reviews.

Yeah, he's one of the few tech reviewers I trust and enjoy watching. He's got the kind of personality I like--serious, well-informed (most of the time), but light-hearted and without ever being crass or trying too hard.

Just because the 1020 sounds better on paper does not make it the better camera. He incorporates the actual experience and ease of use into his scores and the Lumia 1020 sucks in that aspect. Sure the camera may take great pictures when you manually adjust the settings but if you let the Lumia do it by itself, the quality is not up to par.

A smartphone should be a point and shoot device, not a mini DSLR where I have to manually adjust all the settings to capture a shot and plus by the time you adjust the settings, your perfect shot will be long gone. In this respect the Note3 is the better camera, quality may not be the same but its the overall experience that matters.

This camera takes outstanding pictures in my opinion

THE BEAST,,NOTE 3. SIZE IS EVERYTHING!!!

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Most people who say it takes outstanding pictures are referencing outdoors and/or brightly lit scenes. Almost any camera will look good to great under those conditions.

The specific complaint about the Note 3 comes with low-light/indoor shots, as in snapshots of the kids playing by the fireplace and stuff. The Note 2 (and the S3/S4) had a special "low light" filter (software processing) that allowed it take passable, if not great, pictures in low light. For whatever reason, we get the useless golf-swing mode but they threw out the low-light processing filter. If Samsung gives us a software update to put it back in place, then I think I'd be quite happy with the Note 3's camera performance.

But unless you are looking at low light/indoor shots, your "this takes great shots, what are you talking about?!?!?" claims are irrelevant.

I am a complete loss why Samsung put that irrevocably useless golf-swing mode in but took the usable low-light filter out. Perhaps someone mislead them to believe their automated digital image stabilization was enough. Well, we can hope for a corrective update.

I'm not optimistic about an update. Last year, I moved from an S3 to the Note 2. The cameras were very similar, but the S3 didn't have the Note 2's new low light function. An update with low light never came to the S3.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

There is a digital stabilization mode buried in the settings. It is meant exclusively for the low light shots. It does help a lot. Note 3 camera is solid. Check out the GSM camera shoot out. Very thorough review. Note 3 did well against the current competition.

I believe the camera defaults to image stabilization in auto mode. You have to actually turn it off if, for some reason, you want your photos to come out even worse.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

You should only keep it on in low light. It does help.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

Yes it does. Mine was off but is now on. Here you go, first pic is note 2. Looks *brighter* and seems to be the better camera, but zoom in and you will see that the bottom pic from the note 3 captured much more detail of the dim tank. Both cameras were set on their highest respective settings. The note three continues to win even in low light shots

Clearly the note 2 is allowing more light as evidenced by the chairs shadows, but the power of the note 3 is evident by the fact it does take decent low light pics for a cell phone and actually is superior when looking at the details. The rocks in the note 3 actually look a lot better than the note 2 pic. Both pics lost some clarification from uploading both to Dropbox.

Re: Does anyone else think the camera sucks?

In a low light demonstration, you are actually shooting a picture of a light. That's classic.
