Samsung Galaxy S3...does it really beat the HOX? Why or why not?

So the screen, removable battery and sd card expansion,2gigs of ram,and the physical home button are the key factors that make the s3 different from the htc one x. My one x is awsome. But i loved having tons of apps for when im on the road. The expandable storage is tempting considering im only down to 200Mb out of my 9. I think ima cheak out the s3 inna few months and see if i like it.

just numbers but still nice to see unrooted stock

I've had both and locked my HTC one x... problem is, the s3 had better features.

The gestures, removable battery and storage plus sbeam won me out.

I have jelly bean features without jellybean.

Sure the ui is atrocious but I fixed that with new widgets pretty much. I had a battery problem with the one x and a major problem with storage.. didn't think I would but when att service out I needed that one board storage.

One thing.. the camera and camera app. On the one x are by far more superior.

I have the evo 4g LTE (sprints hox) it has sd card, no removable battery, it lasts all day easily, camera is excellent, screen is by far the best one available, to say the phone is thicker and heavier than the gs3 you'd have digital scales and measuring instruments embedded in your hands to feel the difference, multitasking is not an issue for me as i do not make it an issue, it may be a deal breaker for some, but not for me, I'm not going to say its better or worse, i can just say I'm enjoying mine thoroughly!

I have both phones and have been using them(switching between them, but still carrying both around) for awhile now.

1. The One X screen is better, hands down, no contest..
2. The SG3 has removable battery. That doesn't mean you can't replace the One X's battery, it's just more difficult.
4. The SG3 has removable storage, but in all honesty, in the days of cloud storage, is this truly an issue?
5. The SG3 has some nicer features, such as the gestures, but that's just software that *could* make its way to any android phone..
6. The SG3 has 2GB of ram whereas the OneX only has 1GB, even so, both phones are extremely fast.
7. The One X is much more refined. The device looks really sexy, and the haptic buttons are better than the physical buttons on the SG3. If you rock a case on the SG3, the home button is harder to hit.
8. The One X has 2 LED colors, the typical red for charging, green for notifications. The SG3 has more, but I find the blue notification disappointing as that's usually reserved for bluetooth connectivity. It doesn't have a green LED.
9. Both phones on 4.0.4 are extremely fast, no lag anywhere.
9. The One X has the ImageSense chip, for burst pictures as well as quick raw format compression.
10. The One X has drop dock ports, let's hope HTC puts them to good use.
11. The SG3 has a better location for the power button, it's on the side vs on the top. It feels more comfortable to turn the device on/off.

these are my opinions only..
I agreed with you 100%, you know your stuff, owned both phones which is really important in the discussion, but I hated where they power button. HTC placement off all including power port. Has there been any kind comparison on placement of buttons?

HTC One X - Running ICS 4.1 and Sense 4.5

Yeah. I like it on top.

I had the Vibrant (Galaxy S1 on Tmobile) for two years, and jumped to ATT over the weekend (finally - so tired of tmobs horrible coverage!). I was also on the fence, and went with the HOX based on price ($100 less at the ATT store), size (HOX is already kinda big for me, S3 is even bigger!), and the fact that the wive liked it better (figured it would be good to both have the same phone). I also felt like the HOX had a slightly better cam, which is important to me - my phone cams have always been awful and I really wanted one that could take good enough pix to replace my point-and-shoot for casual snaps.

I would agree with those who don't like TW - on my old phone I replaced it w/GoLauncher, which is much more configurable and usable. I like Sense so far. I also love the camera on the HTC - really nice, fast, pix. However, I am amassing a list of features I miss from the Vibrant, that may just push me over to switching to the S3 before my 30 days is up:
- I hate the position and style of the power button on the HOX. It is very awkward to engage, to the point that I really need to use one hand to hold the phone while I punch the button with the other. This shouldn't be this hard - and I have large hands.
- I'm worried about the closed case (hard-to-replace battery, lack of SD mem expansion). I have ~10GB of stuff on my Vibrant - the HOX doesn't have that much free space out of the box!
- There are actually a couple of things I don't like about the cam, that I think the S3 does better. For one thing, it just names the files in incrementing numbers. I like my photos labeled by date so I have some context to place 'em in.

hmm, gotta go. I'll post more details later.

I'm on the fence here. I have two people on my local Craigslist wanting to trade me their Android phones for my iPhone 4s for whatever reason. I had originally been looking to trade for a Samsung Galaxy S3, but really don't like the plasticky feel of Samsung phones. The HOX feels 10-times more solid and well built, so I'm leaning toward that.

I'm a pure Android virgin, so I don't know how the OS and performance of the two phones compete with each other. Which is going to be more of a learning curve? I am coming from a LONG time with the iOS, and am admittedly far from a real "techie".

Can some here who have had both the devices, give me some real objective advice as to which I should pick?

Thanks!

I had the S3, but ended trading it for the One X. For me, the S3 was easier for me to pick up and learn (took me about a week to master), while I'm clocking in at a month with my HOX and still staring at my phone figuring how to do somethings.

Personally, I preferred the feel of the S3. It was soo comfortable to hold. It was light, and the rounded edges just felt great in the hand. The One X feels nice and sturdy, but hey, a phone's gonna get beat up if you drop it either way.

The screens are two different ballparks. The S3 can produce vibrant colors at deep blacks, although at the result of a loss in image quality (thanks, Pentile!), but this is negligible; the risk of screen burn in (only if you leave your phone on high brightness and on 24/7), a bluish tint on white screens, and a screen just too darn dim to see on a bright day.

The One X keeps colors as real as possible, so if saturated is your thing, then the S3 is your best bet. One X' s screen is also brighter, and it's pretty easy to see even with the sun directly overhead. Whites are pure. Although the One X wins in image quality due to its RGB matrix, it simply cannot produce the rich colors and deep blacks of the S3.

Performance wise, I'm giving it to the S3. My S3 was so slow (hooray for defective units! *sarcasm*), but so far my HOX is fast. Although I had some bad luck, a majority of others who have owned both will say the S3 soars. I'm betting my money on the majority decision. Also, if you're a heavy multitasker, then S3 is for you. HOX multitasking is laughable, so much so as that I'd put it behind iPhone.

If you're traveling a lot and like to watch shows and movies, then you'll want the S3. It has SD card support (up to 64GB) and a removable battery, both of which the HOX lacks.

The old saying "Don't judge a book by its cover" really fits here. Although some would say the S3 is ugly on the outside, on the inside it's an absolute workhorse.
But if beauty over brains is your thing, then the HOX is for you.

Personally, I'd go for the S3. I'd rather have a phone that can do stuff as opposed to a pretty paperweight (not saying the HOX is one; amazing device.) I myself am saving for an S3, hopefully I'll have enough by Christmas. :D

For the original poster, being new to Android you could probably forget all talk about Custom ROMS just for now and just try to get used to using an Android phone.
As I have neither I am offering (I hope) an unbiased opinion.

I have personally preferred stock Android over any manufacturers UI, having owned 2 HTC phones in the past as well as two Nexus phones. Before ICS and JellyBean were introduced, I felt that Sense was necessary and had some very useful widgets and features and brought a new level, to Android user experience.

I have felt that since Android 4.0 and 4.1 all manufacturers UI's seem to detract from the Android user experience.

However hardware aside for now, I personally feel that using the Samsung Galaxy SIII is closure to Vanilla Android than Sense is and when I have tried both phones side by side always preferred the SIII over the One X

As stated in many of the replies above, both phones have killer features so you will not be disappointed with either hardware. The real decider I feel maybe in the user experience.

Really? Touchwiz hasn't changed at all. Still looks like it's designed around Gingerbread.

I could add a lot of details to my comparison, but probably more than you want (pm me if you are curious). I would say that the location of the power button is really driving me crazy, and the location of the volume buttons, opposite the power plug, is awful - every time i plug the phone in I inadvertently adjust the volume. Ditto for when I power on the phone, since you have to grip it firmly (the power button requires a firm press) and that's right where I rest my palm. I suspect I'll be swapping the HOX for an S3, and then installing an alternate home screen app.

You might as well write it all up.
