Samsung Galaxy S4 cannot connect to PC via USB after upgrade to Android 4.3

Holy Mother of Pearl - MAKE SURE YOU ARE USING A FACTORY-SUPPLIED USB CABLE and not just any crap USB cable - THIS is the ONLY THING THAT WORKED for me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And Kies suggests you find your model number by looking behind the battery on your phone - REALLY??? THat's the best you can suggest? LOST IN TRANSLATION...

I just spent HOURS on Google trying to figure this out. More than likely this is the answer, somehow your Qualcomm Modem settings got changed.
If you are using Android 4.3 open the dial pad and dial *#0808#
Android 4.2 *#7284#

then under Qualcomm USB or USB settings it should be on MTP or MTP+ADB, it was probably on RMNET + DM + MODEM. Make the change and choose OK.

All should be fine now. :D

Thank you very much chrisj979! You rock!

Works for me 2! tnx! I've used the original cable, removed the usb extension cable and boom its working, TNX guys!!

I have installed Kies but still doesnt recognize my device. I've also changed cables but still not working. What should i do.?

I had to restart my S4 mini, then got notification again: Connected as media device. (and it is connected again, showing card and phone in PC)

It was the cable for me too. Bought new cable from Amazon 9to5Cables USB 2.0 Micro and it works great. I just do not install the samsung application and then after a few seconds the phone shows up as a drive.

When you plug your phone in via USB to the PC, using the pull down menu click on the little USB icon and change it from Camera (PTP) to Media device (MTP). You may have to go into My Computer and click on the phone (mine is under 'portable devices'). Hope this helps!

I have had this DAMN phone for over 2 years now and have had to use Bluetooth to send stuff to my computer. This is extremely slow, especially if it's a video. I have searched HIGH and LOW for a way to look into my phone files so I can move data to my pc and this HAS DONE SOLVED MY PROBLEM! I cannot thank you enough!!!! :D I can finally clean out some of this junk. But some of it I wanted to save and over the last year, I have had to throw out things that I wanted to keep just to have room. Of course this wouldn't be such a problem if my phone wasn't so filled with BLOATWARE!

Thank you, Bless you, Thank you, Bless you!!! etc...

Just a little more info for other users: I have a SAMSUNG GALAXY S4 ver 4.4.2 - unrooted

Had the same problem this week for no apparent reason except maybe a windows update. Followed some advice from the web forums nothing worked. Cracked them, pulled the battery fpr a hard reboot and whalla!! it works. So my advice is if you haven't already pull the battery and see how it goes. Cheers :)

Thanks for posting that - I was searching all over the phone menu thinking I had accidently changed something. Worked like a charm!

Not sure if anyone figured it all out. Use the cord that came with your phone. I was using a different Micro/USB cord and when I used the Galaxy S4 cord that came with my phone... ta-da! No extra apps, no developer mode. Plug it in, the USB symbols appears in Notifications bar. Pull down, tap it and choose either Mass Transfer or Photo Transfer.

thank you very much for the help i changed my service provider from tmobile to cricket 4 months ago and i was unable to physically go in to my phone a get my pictures ...i would have to email them to myself "FOR 4 MONTHS" and thanks to you it was resolved in seconds ....i'am sorry but i have to say it....."YOU THE MAN"......thank you:'(:):'(:)

Here's something that worked for me. I didn't see it mentioned in this thread.

Dial ##366633#
Disable DM Mode

Guys i was facing the same problem...
There is how I figured it out...
Open dial pad
Dial tha code : *#0808#
A window will pop up.
Now if your phone is set up to other options other than MTP + ADB then choose this option.
Now after this there will be another option showing CP or AP....choose option CP and press OK then reboot....
After reboot your PC will recognize your phone and the read and write speed will be increased very much.
BTW I am using lollipop 5.01 and m using AT and T model SGH-I337.
