Samsung Galaxy S6 vs. HTC One M9

Re: M9 VS S6

As for as introductions and presentations Samsung stole the show. Much more enthusiastic and made the most changes to their flagship line by far. So now that the all the "introduction hoopla" (hype) is nearly over what about the actual products? Is the S6 leaps and bounds above the M9 in reality? Yes, Samsung made more "improvements" but had further to go from the S5.
-Touchwiz over Sense really?
-Is their new in house processor really better the Snapdragon SOC?
-So much for custom roms and unlocked bootloaders of you're into that sort of thing.
-Smaller battery than M9...or even M8?
-Took away SD card and removable battery.
-Now that the M9 has a higher MP camera no talk about that.
Let's not let hype be our guides but the actual products. Don't drink the Koolaid!
The M9 was small changes from a nearly perfect phone the M8. On the M8, everyone complained about the camera last year and stated that it was it's weakness. Here we are with the M9, improved camera, software, and hardware and everyone is disappointed and still complaining? I don't get it.... M9 looks great!
I'll reserve final judgment after seeing the final products with actual photo samples and usage. I will be disappointed if the M9 camera results are not at flagship levels. M9 is definitely on the top of my list at this point.

Re: S6 or M9

I think they should have included more functionality for the Edge display but if they've left functional to my Note Edge that's okay too.

Re: M9 VS S6

The M9 is essentially an M8 with a new camera and a software update. But they also states the software update would be coming to the M8, so the only real improvement is the camera, as the CPU is probably not going to be a major real world difference over the M8. Anyway, that's going to make the M9 a tough sale over the M8, they'd better just get all of those off the shelves fast.

The M8 users that will upgrade to the M9 will be flooding the market soon! :D

Re: S6 or M9

Always the S6. I don't like HTC phones. Plus so far the M9 doesn't offer anything over the S6. The S6 does have the option of 128 GB internal storage if you're willing to spend.

In addition the S6 has:

Higher resolution display
Amoled display
Option of Edge display

Heart rate monitor. O2 sats etc.

Better software (imo)

Better range of accessories

Built in wireless charging

Fast charging

I think there are a few more features like the favourite contacts and the edge display lighting up with whatever colour you assigned to your favourite contact when the phone is faced down. There is also the ability to touch the IR sensor to send a message if you can't respond straight away.

Neither one for me...Nexus 6 is still my next phone.

Re: M9 VS S6

Here's the thing. The S6 edge is going to cost $300 more than the M9 with the same storage (with SD). Everyone can go on and on about how pretty the S6 looks but it isn't $300 better than the M9 as far as I am concerned. I just can't get over how tooty fruity Touch wiz is. Can they not have themes like HTC? Lollipop in general I find to bright. At least HTC still has a dark theme. I don't like the back buttons and back speakers on the LG. Love Motorola software but I am lukewarm on their hardware. That leaves the Sony Z4 as the only other device I am considering but even they are on shaky ground.

Re: S6 or M9

There is going to be more overhead on the processor to process the animations in the OS with 1440p over 1080p. Since there are more pixels to power there will be a higher usage of power, so it is safe to say the M9 will have better battery life. There was no need to go to 1440p this year, 1080p is suffice on a 5 inch display. On a phablet, I would nod my head to 1440p as it makes more sense there, but it does not make much sense in this case. Samsung doing a 2500 mAh battery is either dumb or just risky. The SOC is 14 nm, and DDR4 ram is being utilized, but I do not think that they are going to be able to make magical battery life with these specs. 2850 with less resolution on the HTC will mean better battery life, I nod my head to HTC.

QHD vs FHD is moot point on power if display technology is different. QHD on Note 4 is more efficient than 1080p on Note 3 and puts G3's QHD to shame. Also processor and memory power consumption is pretty significant factor too. I don't think Samsung would be dumb enough to make S6 less lasting on battery than S5. And by the way it's 2600mAh vs 2840mAh, not 350mAh difference. Can't wait for Anandtech and GSMarena full reviews.

True, but I doubt that will make the Z4 less of a buy, other than the outside chance of updates waning should they ditch the phone side to that extent. If Sony get the SD810 in, smaller bezels, still get amazing battery life and keep the beautiful form factor, the Z4 should be well worth the wait in the summer.

And, to keep on point, I'd take the M9 - just not convinced about the S6 battery last with 570+ PPI to push.

Re: S6 or M9

The S6 looks impressive but I'll probably go with the M9 unless for some reason it doesn't have band 12.

Not to mention a black pixel on AMOLED is truly off and consuming zero power...whereas a white pixel on AMOLED is a battery hog. Samsung designed their Android theme to be dark-biased (black backgrounds) specifically to preserve battery. But a lot will depend on the apps being used, things like Facebook will light too many white pixels and suck battery...FB Messenger too. Kindle with a lit background (which is why they offer white text on black background).

Anyway a lot will come down to how the screen is used.

Re: S6 or M9

HTC is a dumpster fire. They're clueless on where to go with their phones. The M9 is going to tank...stay away.

Re: I'm Ready For A New Phone...S6 Or M9?

Well S5 is official now. Glass back, no removeable battery, no external storage, no water resistance. The durability of iPhone4 with Samsung software. S6 is the worst of all worlds. But ooooh, it's so pretty!

I am still waiting for my Z tablet to get lollipop. They mentioned in November they were working on it. It's now Match. That doesn't give me a lot of confidence going forward. I love their hardware though so we'll see.

Re: HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6: MY Initial Impressions

I give a slight edge to the S6. But what disappoints me about both (and really the smartphone industry in general) is that battery tech is pretty much at a stand still. All these manufacturers are coming out with faster charging phones, but they're really not doing much to improve the batteries themselves. And as you say a smaller battery with a QHD display is just asking for trouble. I'm sure Samsung will have optimized it well enough to get good enough battery life, but its just disappointing that nothing new has been brought to the table in terms of battery durability.

Re: S6 or M9

I couldn't have been more underwhelmed with the M9. The presentation was really lacking and the presenters themselves didn't seem all that interested in their own device. I don't blame them. There's so very little that separates this from the M8 that I couldn't imagine being excited for this if I had/used to have the M9. They got rave reviews for their design one too many times and it's gone to their head. It's nice, sure, but it's not that nice.

As far as the S6 goes, they took a much larger leap. The Exynos 7420/3GB of DDR4 RAM/UFS storage alone may have made me want it. That shows me a huge concentration was put on efficiency, but coupled with a lot of raw power. I absolutely love the Note 4's camera and this looks to have improved upon that even more. A f1.9 aperture on the front and back will go a long way towards low light performance. The fingerprint sensor looks to be a Touch ID competitor. The screen looks ridiculous. The design on both versions look insanely premium.

What got me onboard, though? Touchwiz looks fast. Like Nexus 6 fast, but without the quad HD stutter and issues with read/write performance because of encryption. Toss out the typical Touchwiz jank and there's just so little to complain about on the software side. This phone is going to be a monster.

M9 or S6? I think that choice is pretty easy this year.

Agree that double tap the home button to open camera was so fast, where as that used to be a huge weak point and cause of lag was double tapping the home button to get into other apps.

Re: HTC One M9 and Samsung Galaxy S6: MY Initial Impressions

HTC has always been meh. But I get what they're doing. The One, One (M8), and One M9 all look alike because HTC is big on their design identity. There is nothing wrong with that. HTC's design was critically acclaimed for the One and One (M8). The One M9 should look similar. That design is hardly stale.

I love what Samsung has done with the Galaxy S6. They've pretty much addressed every build quality criticism from the S4 and S5.

Battery is an industry wide issue.
