Has anyone managed to get one of these connected while using the P preview? My Samsung Gear app crashes as soon as I try connect to the watch and it's been nothing but a paperweight for months, so was wondering if anyone had a work around. Thanks.

Not got it to work. Its been the most frustrating thing about taking part in Android P. I know its a beta, but surprised to have something so significant not work.

I posted a review on the Play Store and the response was 'we're working on it, the watch will be supported when the final version of Android P is released'.

Yes this has been frustrating. I updated to Android P during one if the earlier beta releases and my gear S3 app would force close upon trying to open it. I decided to delete the plugins in effort to reinstall to see if that was the issue and then I could no longer even pair my watch. So I had to switch back to 8.1 to reinstall the plugins but decided to just stay on 8.1.

I was hoping with the latest Android P beta that the issue would be resolved but I guess not as I haven't noticed anyone find a solution as of yet. Debating whether to jump back into the beta and sacrifice the app for now or just wait for the official OTA release....... Decisions!!!

Thanks, I hadn't seen that. I suppose the only positive is that I can stop trying it now until the final version lands (and probably add another couple of months after that date knowing Samsung).

This is a Samsung issue, not Android P. Samsung were relying on a hidden API which should only be available to system apps within Android. Probably something that is used on Samsung phones as some of the Gear related elements are already on-board at a system level on those devices.

With Android P Google has tightened this up and the API which Samsung should not have been using is now unavailable, hence the crash. It's not even an API that is required, so is a fairly quick fix for Samsung to make. They are clearly just waiting for the final release of Android P before fixing this issue, which is fair enough. When you signup for a beta you signup for the ride, no matter how bumpy it gets.

Yeah I get that, though I wouldn't bet on them fixing it too quick for the stable release either.
Was just wondering if anyone had worked out a way around it. Don't think it's enough to make me go back to 8.1 anyway.

Just downloaded Android Pie - the final release software - and its still not working. This is ridiculous. They must have known for months that this wasn't working.

They'll have to release an update to the 3 companion apps first, but i wouldn't hold my breath.

I left the Gear app on my phone to see when it updated. Just has (its name has changed to Galaxy Wear) and it now works on my Pixel 2 with Pie.
