Samsung offering unlockable Developer Edition Galaxy S III

Poor Samsung, if they release this unlocked version after all there probably won't be many takers. What would be the point!

Kind of makes me think that it serves them right for caving to Verizon's whims and releasing the only GS3 with an encrypted bootloader in the first place.

But then again, they were going to try to make it a little better by making the developer edition available to those that wanted an unlocked SG3 on Verizon. So yeah, I guess I do feel a little bad for them. Not. ;)

Since its now unlocked thats exactly what I did.. Went into a store.. walked out w/ a S3.. rooted, unlocked, happy

I don't feel bad.. They knew damn well that the bootloader would be unlocked faster than a one legged cat tryin' to bury a turd on a farris wheel! Maybe they were just tryin to appease Verizon? Hell, I don't know.... lol

Re: Samsung offering unlockable Developer Edition Galaxy S3

It appears that the rooting process and phone locking mechanism is somewhat different then my thunderbolt. I have unlimited data and am going to pay full price either way for an S3

Questions:

1. Any advantage to owning a dev edition versus just buying a locked model and unlocking?
2. If I unlock a locked phone I void warranty, if I unlock dev model do I still void warranty?
3. I have heard there is a bit of SW on the device that registers if the phone is unlocked for any reason?
3. What am I missing?

Thanks for any answers.

1. Dev edition is pretty much DOA at this point. I'll be even more surprised if we see it now. Maybe the leaked bootloader was Samsung's way of providing a dev device? Probably not but it's fun to speculate.

2. Not really. Assuming you're not a complete idiot, you'll be able to revert to stock if your device has a legit issue. The warranty for the stock devices state it doesn't cover defect and damage CAUSED BY modifications but never explicitly says it's voided by the act alone. The dev device only has a 30 day warranty or until the device software is modified, whichever happens first.

3. There is apparently some sort of software on the device that can be tripped by modifying the device. Doesn't seem to work effectively as even stock devices have gotten the custom boot screen with the padlock while others have modified their devices and never even gotten it. There's also a flash counter in download mode that is incremented whenever you flash an unofficial image through odin but that can be reset with an app called Triangle Away.

1. No, not one that I have seen, but see below
2. Technically, yeah, you will void it. 2a. No the device carries a manufacturers warranty.
3. yes, but it is easily gotten around
4. You miss numbered? That is about it.

I would rather, since I am comfortable with flashing, buy the verizon model at a lower price and unlock than pay the full price for the dev model
