Samsung Pay: Useful Tool or Cool Novelty?

I have a phone case that holds my drivers license and credit card, so I just carry my phone. I use mobile payments sometimes but it is faster and easier to pull out the phone and use the credit card. Mobile payments are not good at drive up windows, sit down restaurants, movie theater windows and other places. If I have to carry a driver's license I may as well carry a credit card.

Yeah, drive up windows are definitely a problem. However many movie theaters have automated kiosks that Samsung pay might work in (haven't tried it myself yet), also there are a few restaurant chains that are starting to put readers right at the tables. (Chili's and Red Robin do this, there may be others out there too).

Its a novelty like Android pay & Apple pay.
As long as its only for people living in the land of diabetes and hamburgers, its nothing but a gimmick.

You are implying that it only works at a few places. When in reality it work anywhere you can swipe a card. Go back and see my post on the top of page 3. This isn't apple pay, NFC or Android pay. I have used it a dozen times this weekend all over the place, from the mom and pop beer shop to dunkin donuts, to the gas station, even at a local farm for a Easter bunny breakfast for the kids. Not one of these places accepts apple pay/nfc/android pay.

Dh would use it with his new s7e but our bank isn't on that list and we rarely use credit cards. Hopefully, it gets expanded.

I'm using an s7 edge right now. My point was mobile pay in general is a bit if a novelty whether that be Samsung pay, Android pay, or apple pay. I'm in the UK where all debit cards are chip and pin technology so the method of paying with Samsung pay be a bit stuck in the past here. We don't even have Samsung pay here yet for me to try which I definitely will. Apple pay here in the UK you can use almost anywhere and couldn't be simpler to use

The difference between what y'all do in the motherland and us here in the colonies is that chip and pin has barely begun to take hold. Most chip and pin equipment also includes NFC. So, where chip and pin has taken over, NFC (therefore Apple and Android Pay) is also widely available. Chip and Pin and NFC are inherently secure because they are both encrypted. Sammy Pay, which also includes NFC, has no inherent advantage over Apple and Android Pay in such a location.

OTOH, on this side of the pond, where chip and pin and NFC have barely scratched the surface, loop pay presents a substantial advantage. It allows the same encrypted/virtual card security system that allows crooks no advantage by cracking the system and obtaining millions of dead virtual numbers. The challenge is that the Luddite population has no clue about loop pay simulating a card swipe, hence the common result of 'that wont work here' and the 'oh wow' factor.

Sammy Pay's advantage here is not that its more advanced and represents the system of the future, but rather the opposite, it works with the system of the past. Yes, that system will lose its advantage as Home Depot and Target are dragged (kicking and screaming) into the 21st Century, but while that happens, my card number is secured and hackers will get nothing from me. There are millions and millions of old swipers here that will take years and years to replace. Then there is CVS who has the newer machines and can't figure out how to turn them on (lol).

Yes it definitely works at an AMC kiosk. I used it there all the time. Will be using it Friday to watch Batman Vs Superman. And best part about it is that you get to skip the big line since no one wants to use the kiosk.

The advantage is that when paying with Samsung pay, apple pay or Android Pay. You card number is not transfered and stored in the stores servers. A one time use token that is useless is hackers got ahokd of it. When youbswype your card your card number is transmitted. So Android Pay Samsung pay and Apple pay is the equivalent of using a chip card. I can't wait till the magnetic stripes go away. Because the strips can still be cloned and pretty much make the chip pointless

I use Samsung Pay almost everywhere. The only time I actually pull out my debit card is when I'm out to eat and the server has to run the card. It's convenient for a retail therapy lady such as myself because just about every store I go to it works flawlessly. It's also easier because I always have my phone out and my handbags can get so cluttered at times that searching for my wallet is far too time-consuming, not to mention how time-consuming chips are. I have a Note 5 and my sister has an s6 edge and we both love the convenience and ease of Samsung Pay, and I've definitely wowed a few cashiers who thought it was an iPhone and figured it wouldn't work.

It used to be that the most annoying thing to deal with while waiting in a checkout queue was to see the old lady two spots up take out her f'n check book.

Now that is equalled by seeing the young hipster pull out their phone to pay. Takes just as long once you add in cashier confusion.

I'm not a hipster and it takes me less time to pull out my phone and hold my finger on the button than to pull out my wallet, unzip it, pull out my CC, swipe it, put it back and zip my wallet, then put my wallet away. I think paying with your phone is fast and secure. Why the hate?

I absolutely hate carrying all kinds of "stuff" with me and have been using all forms of electronic payments as they have come out for years.

Once I retire my GS5, I will purposely buy another Samsung phone in order to use Samsung Pay with a GS7/8 or a Note 5/6.

I work as a cashier at a leading pharmacy chain, and we've got the chip readers enabled. It annoys me as much as it annoys the customers. To speed things up when I get rung up on break, I use Samsung Pay whenever I can. It's useful when I shop at skeevy places as well.

I live in NYC so the option to pay with my phone presents itself quite often. I use most often in cab rides, and the occasional CVS or Key Food runs.

Thanks for the tip about using at gas pumps, I hadn't heard about that until just now and I'll have to give it a try

I use Samsung Pay all the time. Using Samsung Pay at Costco is awesome because Costco doesn't accept Apple Pay and because Apple Pay only uses nfc whereas Samsung Pay uses NFC AND MST. Love it!

Just watched a bunch of YouTube videos of people using Samsung Pay. Besides the Wow factor is there really any advantage to using Samsung Pay?

Everybody that I saw using it needed to hold it awkwardly next to the card reader slot for a couple of seconds for it to read their credit card data. If the transaction was over the minimum amount the user still needed to manually push the credit or debit button.

Then there is the process of taking out your phone, scanning your fingerprint, tapping the screen, holding it up to the card reader, fidgeting it around until the magnetic fields align, etc.

Then there is the whole unpleasant idea of handing your phone to the cashier or needing to reach around the register to engage the card reader.

Seems to me it would be faster and more convenient to simply pull out your credit card and swipe it. But it wouldn't be as cool as Samsung Pay!

Is there any real advantage to using Samsung Pay vs. simply swiping your card?

I am really averse to picking up that ”pen" and signing my name, especially during flu season (gross!), so there is one advantage.

Anything else?
For me it is much easier to just use my card. No need to yank out phone and use a fingerprint or pin. Just swipe the card and I'm done.

If I use a chip card just stick it in and wait 10 seconds. I just don't like having to pull out my phone. I also don't wish to input my bank card info into the phone. I know it is safe. Feels even safer not to do it. To each his own.

I don't bank by computer either.

If this is correct and a chip card is as secure as using Samsung pay then there is less incentive to use your phone. Chip cards are getting pretty common, so just need the point of pay to get onboard more.

I don't quite get people leaving their wallets in their cars(as mentioned previously) and just taking their phones along to pay for stuff. No way I'd leave my wallet or phone in the car. Still easier for me to pull out my CC and swipe it for everything. get cash back every 3 months so actually pays me back. Does the samsung phone do that? Not dissing it, if you like it great, just not for me yet at this point.

Yes of course you still earn cash back for using a credit card through Samsung Pay. There should not be any difference because its a transaction just like if you use your credit card online and still earn cash back...

I'm 65 and like tech stuff. When first hearing of this years ago with google wallet, I loved the idea of driving up to order at take out and instead of undoing my seat belt, digging to get my wallet out back pocket to pay, just keeping my seat belt on, reaching up into my shirt pocket, opening up my E-wallet and touching the reader, back in my pocket with phone, grab food and driving away. I've been doing that several years now at MDee but no where else. Now, with Samsung Pay I can do it most everywhere I would use my atm check card or visa credit card. Got the new GS7 and I'm using it everywhere (except places you have to stick the card in like gas station) Anyway, it comes with the phone, what is the big problem. Just download the app and use it (if your bank is in the list) Like someone else said prev entry, once you get use to using it you will love it. Yes, it will get better with software updates. It is not a novelty to me but a great tool. I think it is GREAT ! Used last week at MDee, Best Buy, Food Lion, Pilot, KFC. Some clerks were very surprised it worked since they had old card readers just like in the Sub sandwich commercial. Why can't people look from the other perspective on things like this with what is good about stuff instead of what's wrong with stuff. In the old world of nfc readers, it worked at 10% of places because most places didn't have the new readers. Now with Samsung Pay, it will work at 90% of the places because Samsung bought Loop Pay which was the card reader software. Win Win I still have my cards and use them where I need to, but I don't go home crying because I had to. Come on guys, stop whining about everything. Just enjoy it
